parking brake question - Click HERE for Original Thread

Anyone notice this or is something not right with my X?

When you park on a hill, while pressing on the brake pedal, put the vehicle into park, engage the parking brake, then release the brake pedal - the X rolls a bit and seems to stop by using the parking gear instead of the parking brake.

On other cars (I drove hand parking brakes but that shouldn't make a difference), if I do the same sequence there is a noticeable difference in the way the car rolls and stops when releasing the brake pedal.

I know the parking brake locks the rear wheels but in my X it seems it is the transmission stopping the car - much like parking in gear in a standard car without the parking brake.

My parking brake is working because when I put the car in drive with the parking brake on it doesn't roll.

Anyone notice this too or does my X need to have something done to it?

Sounds to me that your parking brake is not holding the vehicle. Are you sure you are pressing on it with sufficient force. The parking brake should keep the load off the transmission.

With the X, the correct sequence for parking on a hill is:
1. Stop car with regular brakes.
2. While holding regular brakes "on" with your right foot, set the parking brake with your left foot (as hard as it'll go).
3. Let off regular brake and let the X settle against the parking brake.
4. Put the gear selector in park.

There's just enough slack in the mechanisms/suspensions that this is the only system that works consistently.

I noticed the same roll this afternoon, I will try it the way suggested by" frostyra". Sounds like a solid way then, I can say if any adjustment is required on the P-bake.

Thanks for the replies - I'll try out the parking brake first routine to see if that works.
I think I'm going to get my parking brake serviced on my next visit and tighten it up a bit - should allow me to tension the brake at a higher pedal level.

Method tried and there was abit of a role. I would say a little adjustment on the P-brake to achieve shoter pedal engagement.

Anyone thought of parking on the hill, then while motor is running putting you parking brake on and then shifting to neutral? If your parking brake does not hold, your car will start moving back.... This way you'll know for sure if your parking brake holds or not.

That is exactly what I do to AVOID that LOVELY clunk sound when you put it in R or D4.........................

But would this be considered as a Feature or BUG??!?!?

Thanks for the replies guys, I think CTPYHA's idea of
1) parking brake
2) neutral first
3) then release brake pedal
4) go into park
alleviates this problem. The parking brake holds and doesn't do that roll and hold on the transmission.
I do notice though that I should tighten my parking brake as the pedal is close to the ground in order to engage it tightly.
Does anyone know how much time it takes a mechanic to do this?
