I recently purchased an '01 MDX and while cleaning today I had the top layer of the plastic on the bottom 1/2 of the door flake off on the towel. I also noticed this on the plastic trim below the drivers seat.
Is this common? Any idea what's going on or what I can do about it?

| Almost looks like someone put on an after market protective coating. I did not have any problem with my 02 X. Good luck handling the flaking problem. |

| That's my take as well some sort of film build up as well could be the cause. Get some vinyl cleaner and see if that takes it off. |

| Actually, that's what happened when I used a vinyl cleaner on it. Before I did, it looked normal. I just want to make sure I'm not making it worse before I go stripping the top layer off my interior. |

| Yea, that's colored plastic and there's no clearcoat or anything on it. It's probably dried-up-something-or-other that was once applied. Take it all off. |

| I believe that the area had been repaired before. Was probably scratched up at some point and someone attempted to repair and dye the area to hide the damage. Trust me this happens all the time and it really is no big deal, however when the plastic is not prepped correctly before applying the dye you end up with what is happening in your X. My recommendation would be to ask the dealer who they use for their interior repairs and have them fix it right. Just to let you know my shop would charge anywhere from 45.00 to 65.00 to take care of it so that should give you a ballpark figure of how much this is going to cost you. Hope this helps.. |

What he said! I've seen something similar. I would check to see if your MDX has been in an accident. Even in a minor collision, a body shop will replace the exterior panels, but will reuse as many interior pieces as possible. When interior plastic bends too much, it discolors. Dye or paint can be used to cover up the discoloration. |

Would this be something I should be able to talk the dealer into fixing since it's CPO?
On a related note, with a CPO vehicle, do you need to have the work done at the dealer you purchased from or will any Acura dealer do? |
