I just found out from a co-worker that he has this unit installed on his TL when I was chatting with him about this GB. He installed it himself and said it wasn't that hard as long as you know which wires need to be cut.
Anyway, he has it connected to a backup camera, FM modulator, DVD player, video amplifier and headrest monitors and says the picture quality is as good as the ones in Circuit City. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing since I've seen some really terrible things at CC. The sound isn't that great but that's probably the FM mod.
He also mentioned that before getting this unit, he compared it to Sam's and Vsokolov's. He couldn't justify paying almost double for Sam's unit just for the TV tuner and extra inputs. As for Vsokolov's unit, it seems the same as Navwithtv so he decided to get the cheaper one but I think V's unit is now PNP like Sam's unit.
After chatting with him, it suddenly dawned on me how to compare these models. Using the old Honda modeling schemes, this is how I view the different models now:
Navwithtv = DX
Vsokolov = LX - Same as DX PnP
Sam = EX - PnP with exta inputs and built in TV tuner |

Why pay double for PNP.
here is tread by antman who installed similar converter
Successful NAV Conversion install for '04 MDX with RES/Rear cam
I am new to this forum and felt that I should contribute as I have gained much knowledge from this forum.
I don't mean to beat a dead horse but I wanted to share my install with the forum. I haven't seen anyone post for a 2004 MDX with OEM RES and back up camera.
I went with the unit from NAVwithtv. It is not a SAM's unit because I do not intend to hook up any other inputs ie. PS2, etc to the system. The car already comes with inputs for PS2, etc in the back. I just needed a basic conversion so my wife could watch in the front.
Here it goes:
(Back of stock DVD player):
Pin#2: white with red stripe: Accesory power on to the radio. Use this for the power to the nav/conv unit.
Pin#8: solid blue: Video signal
Pin#23: brown with stripe (forgot stripe color but it's only brown wire with stripe in pin23 position): Video shield
You do not need to cut these wires. You just need to splice into them. From the video signal/ shield, you will connect this to a RCA cable. This will be the input to Video 1 on the nav/conv unit.
(Back of Nav Screen Unit) This is a white plug going into a BLUE casing behind the screen:
Solid White wire: Red signal
Solid Yellow wire: Blue signal
Solid Red wire: Green signal
Solid Brown wire: Sync for color
These wires have to be cut. The wires going to the plug will be the OUTS from the nav/conv wires. The other end of the wire you cut will act as the IN to the nav/conv wires.
The nav/conv unit is small enough to sit right behind the nav screen. No need to rip apart your car, take out your seat, etc. as I have seen from other posts.
The rest of the connections are provided in the instructions that come with the nav/conv unit.
I hope this helps some '04 MDX owners out there. I know it was frustrating because no one responded to my questions. Anyhow, this should make it simple for those who are looking to do the same.
The total time it took was 2 hours. Make sure you have all the tools and crimps necessary before taking this on.
Good luck.
those of you, who dont have factory DVD, audio is different subject. |
|
|
| maddawg995 |
According to antman, the unit is installed behind the Navi screen. So since the center console is out anyway, might as well hook up a blitzsafe adapter for sound. Only takes an additional minute or two to install. Just make sure you get the right one.

Why not make this $150 unit plug & play with the right connectors? |
|
|
| domofnavwithtv |
Hi
Quite simple the connectors are too expensive. I think the plug and play unit cost $350. Your wasting your money on connectors and not the product. It takes 15 min to attach the wires without plug and play and you save the extra money for a DVD player.
Thanks Dominic

| First of guys Sam's unit is not plug and play its just molex inserts that cost less than a dollar and are prone to fall out. Plus Sams uniot is not universal that means buy an american or german car and your converter is garbage he will make you buy a new one. Our company is 90% plug and play that means buy a new car just order a new cable and you are set. The plug and play harness' are the factory plug's just like you have in the car that snap right in and can never fall out. You might think it's not worth to pay extra but the day your navi fails and you take it to the dealer and he sees the cut wires you next stop is the parts department and a call to a credit agency to finance the 1700 unit. Its just protection for you to know that it takes two minutes to remove our unit and drive the car in for warranty service no questions asked. Just ask the 2004 tl owner's who installed our unit. The 2004 tl is prone to many problems and many navi's have been broken because of faulty display on top. Some poor guy with sams unit was refused service even though the navigation was not effected in any way. |
|
|
| maddawg995 |
I think the reason why your GB is going that well is because quite a few members on Acurazine already has a module installed. Checking the older threads, I realized Vsokolov did 2 GBs on his unit the past couple of months.
Not being PnP probably hurts your unit too. I think I read somewhere that said the harness costs $50 each if bought in bulk. If you're able to modify your unit and still have it sub $300, I'm sure many more people would be interested.
P.S. - I don't mind paying 200 for the unit but can you ease up on the installation cost? :D

Hi Everyone
If your worried about the dealer seeing the module, mount it behind the screen in the dash. He won't even know its there. If there is a recall on the Nav units the dealer can't refuse you service if they know their Nav units are defective. The bottom line is OEM connectors cost money and people just don't want to pay. Everyone wants plug and play at non plug and play prices. I will do this to prove my point. If you can get 20 people together I will make the units plug and play for $300 each which is cheaper than anyone around.
Thanks Dominic

I a not looking for plug and play, I don't mind patching and soldering cables to the RGB unit. I would like to be able to plug into the Nav unit for easy install and removal.
If the Group buy goes through for $150 I will be buying one, however I would also like to find a resource for connectors to use. These can be molex, OEM, china forgeries, whatever.
The don't need to be prewired harnesses, as long as they are cheap and I can make them work so I can easily add the RGB unit.
So my challenge/request is to find connectors that can be used for under $5 each. This shouldn't be that difficult, it is just pieces of plastic with pins inside... |

Well, I haven't even purchased an MDX yet, but I'd be willing to get one of these for $175 (even better at $150). Splicing isn't a concern, as I won't be leasing.
I wonder if this will cure the 'backup camera delay' on '05 model? Does the switch have to already be in the non-nav position for the backup camera to override the signal?

The unit will switch to backup camera as soon as you put the car in reverse regardless of what position the switch is in.

That's what I want to happen. The res display would still display the dvd--so the kids don't start yelling, yet the nav display would be showing me their bikes that I'd be about to run over.

Just don't hook up the reverse trigger on the RGB converter!
Think of it this way 2 input RGB converter with trigger switch that can be hooked up to reverse.
You could also use it for any other second input and put in a manual switch... |

Is anyone else surprised by the lack of interest in the Ody and Pilot forums
This is just my opinion and it's based on my situation and I would not be surpise others with Pilot and Ody feels the same way.
I have my 04 nav converted for over a year now and I almost never use it. The only time I probably uses it is when I need to get to the right chapter on a DVD. As I've stated in another thread, the use of backup DVD's has elimiated that issue.
I believe most Ody/Pilot/MDX owners have kids and safety is probably their primary concern. Having the capability to watch DVD in the front is useless 99% of the time if you are concern about safety.
If I was to redo my audio/video setup, the NAV conversion would definitely not in the picture. Not at $100, $200 or any amount.
Again, just my .02 |
|
|
| maddawg995 |
I totally get what you're saying. I was debating whether to go ahead with the conversion for a while but ultimately decided to do so (mainly because Dom's unit is less than half price). It gives me something to do while I'm waiting for a parking spot, my wife to do some shopping, or trapped in the parking lot that is also known as the LIE.
For me, the HR monitors are more useless. I should have held off on them until I had kids.

What does that mean?
I am going to do this conversion for my wife and as step one to installing a permanent DVD.
My kids have a portable and I will initially hook up video out to nav screen so my wife can watch. Seems kinda boring to be riding in the front seat for several hours just listening to a movie... At least I have to watch the road, press the pedals, change lanes, etc. so I have something to do...
So for me (probably over a couple years):
1) Install Blitzsafe - done, 10 min install http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=20946
2) Install Nav conversion so portable can be seen from front seat
3) Install underseat DVD player connected to one of the NAV conversion inputs
4) Install headrest monitors
Once I have a DVD player installed with a feed to the it will be an easy step to upgrade to headrest monitors. |
|
|
| vlam |
What does that mean?
One of the main reason for converting my NAV was the ability to have OSD on my DVD player in the front. I have a permament DVD player under the driver seat but it's annoying having to skip through the menu screen of DVDs blindly. Being able to display it in the front is a plus. My original intent of the NAV conversion was more of "coolness" than it was for my wife to watch DVD in the front.
In your case, why not just get another portable DVD player for your wife in the front? Being able to route the audio to the stereo is great when you are not using the NAV. My 2 1/2 years old find it annoying when the NAV prompt interrupts his favorite movie.
I am not trying to steer you from getting the NAV conversion. I am just posting my experience. domofnavwithtv post on adding this unit to have backup camera feature may be very important for some. |

Ok, so backup dvds have elimated the issue by playing the same move on multiple players?
I don't really want to try to sync up multiple players to get the audio and video working together. Also there isn't a good way to strap down a player in the front seat to keep it from being a projectile.
Finally getting it hooked up to the nav screen is just step one, step two is to add headrest monitors.
As far as the kids complaining about the NAV interrupting the movie... I don't think they will do that more than a couple times.
Complaint #1 - Sorry, that is just how it works... (or perhaps I turn off the voice)
Complaint #2 - Warning, next compleint will result in the movie being turned off so it won't be interrupted any more.
Complaint #3 - Movie off, interruption no longer an issue... |

I think what Warzau meant was that if you rip a DVD movie and just keep the movie itself without the rest of the features, it would essentially play as soon as you pop it in.
And you don't have to put the DVD player under the passenger seat. Some have installed it right under the "not a cigarette lighter" area (which is where I plan to install it). It just has to be a really small one, and ideally slot-loading so you don't bump into the gearshift area. This is IMO, the ideal place, coz you can easily hook up a blitzsafe straight into the back of the DVD player. |
|
|

I was trying to install it there as well but I couldn't find the post on how to remove the plastic piece on the back. I wanted to remove it to drill some holes so I can run wires out the back unless someone has a easier way to do so.

Thanks XStatic. Rather taking out the back plastic piece, I just pulled it off the hinge on the lest side and ran the wires through the opening. It works exactly the way I wanted it to without having to "vandalize" the car. :D

You still have 1 day left, for the Group buy after that the module goes back to $299. THIS GROUP BUY ENDS APRIL 30,2005 at 11:59 PM. This mod will work on ALL cars except the Mercedes Benz and the BMW 5 and 6 series. The DB9 cable refered to in the instructions is the cable we provide you with. ALL ORDERS THAT WERE PLACED BEFORE 3 P.M. TODAY WERE SHIPPED. If you want your tracking numbers please email me at sales@navwithtv.com. If you are purchasing this module for a car other than an Acura or Honda please let me know so I can provide the proper instructions to you. If you don't know what car you are putting it in at the time of purchase thats ok, just call me when you do and I will provide the proper instructions. All Hondas and Acuras have the same wiring except for the sync wire. On the one car the sync is BROWN and on the others it is Green. You will be able to tell which is your SYNC wire because if you cut this wire the picture of the NAV rolls like a TV with a bad vertical hold. If you have any other question fell free to call me at 718-763-7367, email me at sales@navwithtv.com. I will also be answering question here on the forum.
Thanks Dominic

Hi Everyone
Because I didn't realize that the April 30, 2005 was on a Saturday, I will give everyone till Monday to call in your final orders. This is the FINAL FINAL deadline.
After that all modules will be back to $299. ALSO IF YOUR UNIT COMES WITH A BLACK DB9 CABLE AND YOU DON'T SEE THE SHIELD WIRE (NON ISULATED) WIRE, CUT BACK SOME OF THE INSULATION ON THE WIRE TO EXPOSE THE NON INSULATED WIRE. THE NON INSULATED WIRE AND BLACK WIRE MUST BE GROUNDED FOR PROPER VIDEO GROUNDING.
Thanks Dominic

I got mine installed by Dom's crew. I wasn't overly impressed with the guy that did the install. He looked, at most, 18 years old and half asleep when he did it. The fact that it took him almost 3 hours to install it while most members did it in 45 min didn't sit well with me either. I asked him in the beginning whether he would mind if I sat in the back while he was working on it and take some pictures but he didn't feel comfortable with it so no write up from me.
Anyway, the important thing is it works and nothing was broken. However, I did notice some unused wires sticking out. What the heck are the speaker wires for? |

I got mine today (thanks, Dom) and have chickened out big time on the installation.
Anyone have an installer in North suburban Chicagoland that they can recommend? Stereo guy, handy x forum member, etc? PM me. Thanks,

| Anyone know if you can still get the discount price on this module? I just discovered it but do not want to pay the full price. Also, can it play/accept the signal from the stock DVD player so the driver can watch the same thing as the rear passengers ? |

I got this unit for the $125.00 price and it is awesome. What a great deal and modification. The picture on my Nav screen is incredible and this unit was not that difficult to install. Anyone who did not take advantage of this deal really missed out on a trick mod !!! Click on the links below for pics of the finished product.
Pic 1 System booting up as normal.
