Here is my problem, I have a 2001 MDX that is having transmission problems almost exactly what has been described in all the discriptions that I have been reading on this site. We took it to our local dealer today, after being told by a friend in the business that there was a recall for the transmission. ( we never recieved any notification from Acura). The vehicle has 60,000 miles on it, and we were told that they may as "a courtesy" replace the transmission, but we would have to pay for the labor @$80.00 per/hr for 7 hours. To me this does not sound right.... my feeling is that maybe I should take the deal,(before he changes his mind) and then fight the fight afterwords.??? They claimed at first that they were not aware of the recall, then said that my VIN # was not included in the recall.
If anyone has any input or advise please let me know...
Thanks in advance.

Just my $.02 but if I had a slipping tranny and could get it fixed for under $600 I would do it ASAP. Good luck with everything.

The recall applies to ALL '01 and '02 MDXs.

If your problem is slipping, then that's a different issue than what the recall addressed (but you should still have had the jet kit installed as per the recall).

Since you're presumably only 10k out of warranty, I'd ask for parts and labor to be covered (especially if you've had all recommended maintenance done @ the dealer). I don't know that there's any harm in asking for a district manager to approve full parts & labor as a goodwill gesture in advance. Of course, to expedite the repair you might opt to pay what they've asked and let them know that you'd like to speak w/a district manager to discuss covering the labor. In either case, I can't imagine they'll "take away" their parts offer.

The dealer is getting paid either way, whether it's Acura's money or yours.

I would see about getting this fixed at their dime since no jet kit was installed--here is the notice for affected VIN #'s.

I once had some luck in a similar situation by sending a letter to my state Attorney General. I had a Saab with a defective paint job (that isn't all that was defective, but don't let me get started ... ). I never got a recall notice.

The Saab dealer was going to do nothing at all for me because I was "out of warranty" and the "date to respond to the recall notice" was long past. The AG's office got them to agree to pay half of the cost to repaint the vehicle.

They priced repainting it at $1,400, so my half would be $700. (HAH! I wasn't born yesterday!) So I told them I would accept their offer to pay half, but I was getting it painted elsewhere for $650 (my half being $325). They came back and said they'd do it for $700. Scumbags!

It's worth a shot - call them up and talk to them first, but I agree with phins2rt ... if you can get a new tranny for $600, jump on it!

bugman,

Any update on what you did. Just wondering if you went with the labor only at $600. My dealer estimated $4k for out of warranty, Needless to say if and when my tranny goes out it sure is not going to that dealer for that price:3: And what The Worm said is what I'll do when the time comes for the tranny to go.:4: Still running strong at 82K!:p

Hey everyone,
wanted to let ya'll know an update. I spoke with the dealer today and they agreed (after a little proding) to replace the tranny and cover labor as a good will gesture. I am greatfull that it has worked out. I have owned a lot of vehicles over the years and to real honest my experience with the MDX and Acura has been very good overall. I really appreciate all of your responces, it is good to know that there are folks out there that "just want to help" NOW MAYBE I CAN GET MY WIFE TO FORGET ABOUT SELLING THE MDX AND BUYING A SPORTS CAR.
THANK AGAIN...will check back with ya'll(can you tell I'm from Ga.)

I may be wrong, but isn't the tranny RECALL independent of mileage?

(hoping so, since I am JUST shy of 50K, and have procrastinated on bringing my MDX in for recall service)

bugman,
Thanks for the update. Hopefully I can get a goodwill gesture for an out of warranty. I would settle for labor cost. Wonder if Acura will step up and honor their tranny for the MDX like the TL to 100K in addition to the jet oil kit.
cbarry,
My oil jet kit(recall) was installed at 75K. If you do it before your warranty is up it may save you a trip later unless you opted for an extended warranty. Jmho.
