No need to remove console, possibly damaging vents, plood, breaking clips, etc.
- Remove Not An Ashtray
- Remove 5 screws holding Not An Ashtray base
- Pull rear trim
- Remove 4 screws holding storage area trim & 12V supply
- Plug in the Blitzsafe - easy to reach back of radio
- Reverse process to complete

I just left the RCA jacks in the storage bin for now but you easily snake wires out of the console area to the firewall area to get them wherever you want or under the center console to the arm rest storage area.
The purpose of this post was just to install the unit without pulling the dash apart and removing the radio. |

Wow, that seems simple enough. Do you then use a splitter to put the two RCA's into the iPod's mini jack? How's the sound? I tried the mini-jack into my home stereo, and it sounded terrible. I ended up buying another dock and coming out of there with monster cable, and it sounds fantastic.
Thanks. |

Not really a splitter, but yes, I use a stereo mini jack to RCA to connect to a portable MP3 player or portable DVD player.
Try adjusting the volume on the IPOD, you might have been driving the line level inputs on the stereo too high. |

I have a Creative Zen and yes I used a 3.5mm to (2) RCA cable to connect the MP3 player to the RCA cables of the Blitzsafe. So far I have no complaints. The sound is great.
I did notice once that sound wasn't coming out of the right side speakers but when I hit a bump audio was coming through. I think the 3.5mm connection in the MP3 player was not in properly and the bump jigged the cable in. No issues since then though. |

Same setup here and that has happened to me before where I didn't have the miniplug all the way in. I split my blitzsafe inputs between the Zen and aftermarket DVD using a DPDT rocker switch hidden under the lighter outlet flap in the center console. |

Did you use an RCA selector with the rocker switch? If so what make and model was it? |

No. I used a switch to pass the signal to the blitzsafe from either the Zen or the DVD player. The switch is dual-pole dual-throw (DPDT) and costs abour 40 cents at radio shack. It works very well. |

Can you expand more on how you made that switch?

http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dum...le/id-2923.html
I bought a DPDT switch and use it as a relay. There are 6 connections (common pr., relay 1 pr. & relay 2pr.). I have the common pair connected to the blizsafe output. The swtich is between the blitzsafe and the two relayed outputs - the DVD player and the Zen which are connected to the other 2 relays on the switch. So, the blitzsafe signal goes to the relay switch and position one on the switch takes the signal audio from the DVD and relay position 2 takes the signal from the MP3 player.
I do not have pics of this setup. |

| XStatic, this has got to be one of the most useful posts I've seen. One tip: use a magnetic screwdriver! Lost one screw that should go into the center. I didn't even have a stubby screwdriver, so I used the tip of an electric one and pliers. |

I am a newbie here, so be gentle:
Can this install be done on a 2005 with RES? Or is it impossible?

A lot of people already know this but you can make almost any screwdriver magnetic by rubbing a magnet (the stronger the better) across it in one direction several times. |

Sorry for the probably-obvious question (it's my first post here), but:
Which model Blitzsafe adapter did you use? I've gathered from other threads here that I should be able to hook one model (the "HON/AUX DMX V.1", perchance? Or is it the "HON/AUD DMX V.1D"?) up to my 2005 Touring + Nav (no DVD) unit, and retain both the in-dash CD and XM functionality - is this correct?
BTW: Kudos to everyone here. I'm VERY glad I've found the AcuraMDX.org site, as it appears to have an incredible wealth of information. Great knowledge resource, as well as sense of community... |

Welcome aboard! The following link is a little confusing, but from what I gather, the AUD designation interfaces with Audiovox, and so, to play it safe, go with the DMX/V1 (this is the one I have hooked up),
HON/AUD
Good luck! |

Help!
I had someone else install this, and the blitzsafe is bad, so now it will take two to four weeks for them to get another. Since I have found this thread, I am going to buy another blitzsafe and install it myself.
My problem is I have everything apart, but I am not sure where to unplug the bad one and plug in the new one. I have felt behind the HU but am not sure which one is the blitzsafe connection.
I know it is not the bulk connection just to the left of center of the HU, but didn't know if the connection was to the left or right of that. Any help would be appreciated. |

Ok, I tried these instructions yesterday and feel like an idiot. I tried several sizes of short/stubby screwdrivers and could never get either the screwdriver to seat properly in the screws (the two screws behind the metal wire running across the front) or get enough leverage to be able to loosen two other screws.
What is the trick? I saw the instructions, saw the pictures but the workspace is so limiting to use and for viewing all the screws under there. |

I installed a PIE X3 so that I could retain the factory XM. I needed to fish wires through the dash better and tap into a 12v power supply. I found the coat hanger plood removal to be easy once I figured it out, but the instructions online were somewhat vague. I've posted some more detailed photos for anyone wishing to fully pull their stereo out for such projects. Again, once you know how to do it, you can pull the plood out in a matter of seconds, and the stereo is held in by just six screws.
Photos are posted here. |

I tried this method on my 2005 MDX ( no NAv). It seems you have to be a bit
of a contortionist to get your hand behind the radio. once you've gotten to this step ( see picture) below
Once you do there is
a plug, I'm guessing its the white one in this picture -( by the way these are not photos, they were taken from other posts)
Which needs to be removed
Which is damn near impossible to do given the tiny space and the sharp angle
my wrist was bent at just to grab the plug. I couldn't get it to come out. Not sure
if there are release clips but I couldn't feel any. Does anyone here have any
suggestions. Am I doing this correctly? Someone on one of these thread said
it was pretty easy to reach the around the radio this way, yet it seems anything
but easy and I don't have thick arms or hands |
|
|
| jrtiger |
Mmelgar,
I had the same problem and I have small hands. It was very frustrating for me and I finally gave up and took the dash bezel off and got complete access to the electronics. This also allowed me to dress the wires/cables better. If I remember there was a cable that interfered with removing the plug. I was installing an Omni-Fi and I love it. I know others had better luck than me using this technique and may be someone can offer you additional help. |

Ok. I did it. First of all, it is definitely NOT 10 minutes. I have to say it took me, a non-mechanic, about 2 hours, counting efforts of finding tools and feeling like a fool at first. But I did it.
I am adding some comments so anybody wants to do this have some non-techie information.
==> 1. Remove "Not An Ashtray":
Ok. This means the tray itself, not the label. I was wondering if there is some screws below the label but it does not. You should pull the tray until you feel a obvious stop, then pull again and move a bit down ward. It should slip off.
=> 2. Remove 5 screws holding Not An Ashtray base.
This is the trickiest thing. You must have the right tool, otherwise you will get very frustrated. The front two screw (black color screws) are at about 45 degree angle. These two and the 2 nearby copper color screws will need a short philip screw driver with a thick handle. This is the secret. Since I could not quite see what I was doing, I used a small mirrow to find the position. Then, I sort of used my left hand index finger as a guide while I manuveur the screw driver. The far-back copper color screw requires an extra long screw driver. I used my left hand to hold the screw as it came out so I don't lose it. It is like a black hole there so move slowly.
Once I removed all 5 screws, the tray holder came right out.
=> 3. Pull rear trim
=> 4. Remove 4 screws holding storage area trim & 12V supply
Honestly I have no idea what to do after reading this description. First of all, I cannot find "4 screws." I only found two. And yes, I did it with only the two found. So read on. Here is my version of the steps - find the first screw right next to the power plug. This black screw is pointing upward. You can take it out by the short screw driver mentioned above. The 2nd black screw is in the far back slight above and to the right of the copper color screw I removed. Again, take it slow and try to hold the screw as it comes out. I hate to lose the screw since I don't have any spare. I don't know if I can find it if I drop. (Don't drop it because you probably cannot find it knowing what I know now.)
After taking out these 2 screws, I paused for a long time because I cannot find "the other two." This is the moment I removed the lilttle rubber mat. You can just pull it out! I don't think it was really necessary to deal with this little grey mat but I was looking for extra screws. Anyway I try to pull the trim out but clearly the power core is stopping the movement. Things got tense a bit. I fell trapped. Finally my helper said I may need to unplug the power source in order for the trim to come out. Since it was so tight, we choose to cut the white tie that hold the black power sources. We carefully cut the tie. This took a while because I don't want to "severe the tie." With a few carefully clipping, the tie was cut.
Still having problem with the power core not letting lose at this time, my light bulb came on. I figure maybe I could just pull the trim out but swing it to the right side. With a bit force, that is exactly what happened. Basically I loosen the power cable enough so I can pull a bit. I was able to pull the trim outward and turned 90 degree to the right. I never had to unplug the power cable. And I am glad I didn't. I probably would have broke something.
Wow, at this time, the whole inner space was wide open. I had no problem feeling the open port behind the CD Player. I used the picture I refered to in the above thread so I trust you can feel that hole, too. It is the only open spot near the big cable in the back. It is hard to miss.
Another reminder for non-mechanic type like me: You have to shift your gear to the 1-2 gear so that you have more space to work. You do this by turning your key but do not crank the car. Apply break and shift the gear down to gear1-2. Put on the emergency break too. If you don't do this part, you won't have enough space to pull the trim. I also used a piece of clothes to cover my wood shift stick so I don't scratch it.
==> Plug in the Blitzsafe - easy to reach back of radio
Call me Mr. Slow. At this point, I am about 60 minutes into this job. The joy is that I can plug the Blitz Safe into open port. And, I made sure I heard the one "click" sound. What a nice click! The cable was tightly secured and I fell better already.
Before I put everything back, I had to test. I hook up a Y-cable which convert the RCA audio back to a mini stereo male connector. I plug this into my iPod Nano.
Once I turned on the power of the CD player and push the "CD" button, sure enough the screen showed "CD1 1-99" or something like that and can hear the music playing from the iPod. Hay, it is definitely better than the sound from the cassette tape adaptor. Yeah. Got it! Gosh, I should have done this sooner. IN fact I bought this Blitz Safe a long time ago but it was a mess when I tried to do the "hard way" once so I never finished the job.
Thinking about any rattle of moving part, I used a double-size tape to hold the Blitz Safe on the plastic part of the working area. The spot is about two inches higher than XSTATIC's picture shown. I also chose to let the red-white RCA audio cable come out from the center portion of the trim area. The only reason is that it is the loosest area when I put back the trim.
==> Reverse process to complete
The reverse process also requires some tricky movement but it is easier than coming in. I paused a couple time during putting back the trim. This thing seemed to have grown and looked bigger than it came out. The power cable was still very tight. I finally found the right angle and push it with a bit of force. Put the trim back in. I did the far-back screw first. I used the long screw driver and applied scotch tape to hold the screw as I placed and tightened it. It went in just like that. The power plug screw was a blitz!
Putting back the tray holder, I placed the far-back screw first, too. Again, I used the scotch tape and my fingers to hold and tighten back the screw. The other four screws were easier. In fact, it seemed easier to put back the screws since each has a hole to helped me position the movement. By now I fell strange as why it took me so long to install this thing. :)
The Blitz Safe definitely works. This lets me use the car audio system as my iPod speakers. I am planning to use it for my XM radio. No extra switch or cabling for now. I fingure the audio cable is easy enough to deal with between XM Radio and iPod.
In summary, I want to thank XSTATIC for posting the original instructions. This is definite an easier way than opening up the wholle navigation and CD player area. I hope my added comments help for anybody who wish to attempt a similar venture. Maybe you can do it in 10 minutes. Or any time between 10 minutes and 2 hours. This can be done. Good luck.

Glad it was helpful, sorry it was longer than advertised.
I put this project off for a long time because I didn't want to tear everything up (I still have uninstalled video patch for NAV display :3: ) when I started in on it this method occured to me and it really did only take about 10min. I was so pleased after putting it off for so long I wanted to share the resuts so I went back to undo it all and take photos.
And my hands are fairly big, size 12 wedding ring (a new ring would need to be 13) and XL or even XXL gloves. |

I was a little nervous after reading through the thread, thought maybe Xstatic was some sort of mechanical wizard and that it really would take two hours...
Assuming some other readers might be in the same boat, I thought I would mention that I decided to go ahead with the install anyway, and that I also found it went very quickly. Probably more like 20 minutes; it didn't help that my printer was broken, so I had to keep running upstairs to view the computer monitor! Didn't lose any screws (which is normally my specialty!) and had no trouble getting my XL paws back behind the radio to install the plug.
I installed the Dension Icelink rather than the Blitzsafe; wanted to report that it works like a champ, can navigate through songs on my 5th gen iPod using the controls on the steering wheel, and can switch between my first 5 playlists using the radio reset buttons. Never played with the Blitzsafe, but I can confirm that the Icelink is sweet! :D :D :D |

First - thanks everyone for all this guidance - it was great. Just got done installing the Blitzsafe in my 2002 MDX. Sound is awesome!
Several items that may already be in others' posts:
1. It took me about an hour because I was in no hurry and had trouble finding all the screws etc.
2. I used the HON M-LINK DMX V.1 which connects directly to the ipod. Purchased from Enfig Car Stereo .com - arrived in 2 days.
3. Screw driver - philips - length 4 1/4 inches - did the job. Any longer it would have been a problem. Also, I had a 90 degree offset screwdriver that helped.
4. When disassembling - take notes on what screw goes where - eliminates the guess work on reassembly.
5. I drilled a 3/4 inch hole is the back of the molding so that the wire connections are in the tray (i.e. to avoid disconnecting by accident and having to redo this effort). Used a 3/4 inch wood drill bit.
6. Connected Blitzsafe unit to the back wall using double sided tape.
7. When plugging in the Blitzsafe flat side of the clip when down while the locking mechanism is facing up.
8. Storage area and 12-volt unit only have 2 screws (not 4) on my 2002- as noted by RedMDXMemphis.
Good luck everyone - it is worth the effort: ) |

dapretendr,
The Blitzsafe is just an auxilliary interface that allows you to connect your iPod to the rear of the Bose head unit. When you press the CD button on the HU a second time, the Blitzsafe will play your iPod through your stereo system. You must control your iPod from the iPod itself. With the Blitzsafe installed, the steering wheel buttons will still control the volume of your stereo system, but have no effect on the iPod. Likewise, the HU buttons will control the stereo system, but have no effect on the iPod. But, hey it works and is an inexpensive way to play your iPod through your stereo system. |

KPK,
I installed the Blitzxafe Hon/Aux DMX V1 in my MDX. I am not familiar with the Denison ICE-link. A Y-connector is not needed. The Blitzsafe switches between the CD player and the iPod when you press the CD switch on the Bose head unit. If you look at the pic of the Blitzsafe, you will see a blue connector. This blue connector plugs into the back of the Bose HU. You will also see two female RCA connectors. To these two female RCA connectors, I connected a 6 ft. patchcord with two male RCA connectors on one end and a miniplug on the other end. The miniplug from the patchcord connects to the iPod which I keep in the center console tray. Whether you install a Blitzsafe or Denison, you might want to refer to this thread to do a stealth installation. |

I had to take out the radio (tried removing not a ashtray but didn't work). I conencted the ice link in to an open aux port next to the radio input. Make sure you have the right connector.
Currently I have put the Ipod and the connector under "not an ashtay". If you want to do a stealth installation, refer to Wazowski's instructions.

Hi Excalibar,
Go to ebay and search for icelink....
2 Honda-Acura kits available. pre 2004 MDX and newer model
I have one coming this week at total cost of $15.00
Cradle option not really what I need but hope it will fit newer Ipods.
I already used the "not an Ashtray" install method to check connector... Screws are a pain but take your time and it works. I got plenty of room to reach open connector in back of radio. It helps that I knew where to look. Icelink due to arrive on Friday.
I will post if this unit works....

Hi Excalibur,
ice Link cost me $15 with shipping and there are a bunch of units
available on ebay.
I took out the radio and installed the ice link in the exact same port when you have blitzsafe installed.
I haven't had time to play with the FF and REW options but audio quality is great.
I wouldn't advice you to change your blitzsafe if it is working fine.

I see a Denison Ice link in eBay. It is a Denison ICE>Link: PLUS 120-JVC for your iPod.
Is this the unit that works with MDX?
Specifically a 2006 Canadian MDX without Navi, but with RES.

Just installed my 8gb 2g iPod Nano, using XStatic's 'not an ashtray' install, above. Used the kit supplied by Neo (Neo ProLink PODHONR2V2) and completed install in about 45 minutes. Placed iPod Nano cradle in glove box for easy access. Absolutely stealth install. Sound quality is perfect. iPod stays constantly charged, and can be instantly removed.
Neo ProLink was $200, and service was superb. Could not ask for better iPod solution. |

Once I had the wiring done I used the "My iPod/Blitzsafe Install " thread technique to wire through the shifter compartment to the center console.
All is well.
PS, I bought my MDX with the front lighter disconnected. This method was a good excuse to fix that too!
Thanks bunches |

been wanting to get around to this for *quite* some time. Just one minor question: Does the 01' MDX have the empty 14-pin Aux port?
What are your average prices for the blitzsafe? (they are selling for around $69.99)
Thanks. |

The 14-pin port is where you plug Blitzsafe on an 01. And your quoted price sounds about right, unless you can get it secondhand. |

| I wish it was that easy for me, but with RES, it is not to be. However, I may just run a plug for the aux jacks in the very back to the front for my Ipod. I think it will probably work just as well. Just need a longer plug. |

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this post (and others). My Blitzsafe install is in progress. Not sure exactly where to put the Blitzsafe unit. Wherever I put it, it seems that it interferes with the replacement of the rear trim/12V power supply thing. I confirmed the Blitzsafe is working, and installed properly (saving me from the frustration of the iPOD cassette adapter which is malfunctioning and ejecting ever 5-15 seconds).
I just CAN'T get things back to how they were before the install. Can anybody who has done this install give me any suggestions? It looks pretty ratty right now. I will work on it tomorrow when it is light again! |

Sorry I don't have any pictures to help, but I basically crammed mine in the back behind the framework that the stuff bolts to (the stuff you took out). The picts on the forum show it as good as I could.
The trick for me wasn't the blitzsafe, but the cable that routed to the ipod. At first I didn't pay much attention, then I realized it was keeping the plastic items from getting back in place. I had to reroute the cable up and over that area so the plastic would fit back normally.
Wiggling it all around can't hurt either.
Hope this helps a bit... |

Thanks kbleicher. That cable for the iPOD is what I am having some difficulty with also. At first I tried to thread it from on top of the rear trim downwards. Then I realized that the "not an ashtray" would have to go back in so that wouldn't work (at least I didn't think so).
I will try to cram the Blitzsafe in the far back and leave the cable to the iPOD free. It is kind of nice that the included cable (bought it at Enfig) also charges the iPOD!
This is probably a job for the daytime. |

Part of the trick is that I didn't route the cable down to the ashtray area. I took it around by the accelerator pedal, then under the panels by the shifter and routed it up through the center console. So in my case I was able to thread it around that way rather than through the area you're working in.
There's another thread showing how to wire to the center console. Yell if you need the link. |

| Thanks again! For simplicity, I don't think I am going to try to get the iPOD in the center console. I will probably just leave it in the small storage area under the "not an ashtray". This should work, right? |

| It should.. one of the threads shows that solution... |
