I added the PS and the ATF coolers to my MDX today and it was a great install (thanks to all the pics of those who have done it themselves).

But I'm a bit confused, the PS needed fluid since adding the cooler (about 1/3~1/2 a bottle).

But after driving my MDX around for about 15 min, parking it and letting it sit about 10min for the AT fluid to settle, it doesn't seem to need any fluid

I've checked about 20x (engine off) and each time the level is just @/above the highest dot. I spilled very little when removing the return hose, but I figure the cooler itself would hold some amount of fluid that would need to be added/replaced.

those of you who have DIY install of the coolers, how much ATF fluid did u have to add? I suppose I should have checked my level before I installed the cooler, but i was a bit excited to get it done :)

TIA for any responses

IIRC,
I added very little. It was around a 1/4 -1 /2 a cup.

thanks, I feel alot better now...

can 1/4 ~ 1/2 cup even be measured on the dip stick?

I'm tempted to not even replace the fluid in risk of adding too much, the level on the dip stick is fine but I'll be keeping an eye on it for sure.

thanks again

I bought the OEM trailer hitch & PS/ATF coolers from Tim last week and I plan on doing the install this weekend. I have an '04 and the last few times I checked the ATF fluid level (currently at 7,800 miles), the level on the dipstick was ABOVE the "full" mark. Not so high that it concerned me, but definitely above "full". Ilm guessing that if I could expect to only need add "1/4 - 1/2 cup" of new fluid for a typical install, then I won't need to add ANY due to my tranny being a bit more than "full" from the factory. With this in mind, I'm going to attempt the install WITHOUT aquiring some new/extra ATF fluid before I start the job. I'll report back next week.

when I removed the AT return hose I removed the top connection first and replaced it immediately with the ATF cooler hose.......

I then plugged the return hose with a 1/2 extension so it would not spew fluid while I worked loose the lower connection.

once it was removed I then connected the lower hose of the ATF cooler...

i lost very little fluid most of which was in the return hose itself

and the ATF fluid spilled on the hose area while the connections were taking place made great "lube" for slipping the hoses on
:p

since I didn't check my AT level before hand, I'm thinking I was reading much like u are now since my X only has 7200 miles on it as well.

good luck

I just double checked the quart I bought when I did this. I still have 28 oz left so I used 4 oz. Hope that helps.
