I am looking for a friendly person that will help by sharing their experience modding an xbox and help me through the process.

Xbox mod forums are a bit intemidating.

Modded the PS2. Although I also have the Xbox, I believe the problem in modding it is the ability to back up your games.

First of all, are you doing a software mod or a hardware mod?

I understand modding an xbox kills the ability to play online.

MS can detect it and won't allow you online.

I always found Afterdawn a good site for this sort of info.

The primary reason I want to mod the Xbox is to be able to back up the games to a large hard drive so I don't have to deal with the disks anymore.

I never have, and probably never will use XBOX Live so I am not concerned with online capability.

You can still play all of the online-compatible XBox games online -just not on the LIVE! network.

http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/

The XBox online is different than the PS2 as LIVE! centralizes the whole online experience onto a single host paltform while the PS2 games rely on the individual developers to host the games on their networks. Because of this reason and to avoid piracy, Sony discs emply a Dynamic Network Authentication System or "DNAS" that verifies the games when they attempt to go online. If you have a duplicate DNAS ID on your disc - you are blocked. There are methods of cloning valid DNAS ID's but that's not for this topic.

I may be contacting you for help in a couple weeks...

Using a mod chip do I need to get anything off the old drive or can I just pull it and put it in storage?

I read online that there is a mod chip that allows you to "turn it off" somehow so you can still play XBOX LIVE. This might be worth looking into if you want to play online through Microsoft's service. I don't have any other information besides the below link.

I think all 3rd and 4th gen mod chips allow you to switch to onboard bios and boot up with the chip disabled to run in a normal mode and use XBox Live.

I can boot up to the Xenium OS now and I have learned a couple things.

1) I didn't need the SP Ice kit, it is only necessary for 1.6 Xboxes, I have 1.3 so now I have lots of extra parts....

2) I should have installed the pogo pin inserts first, They were easy to go in and I had lots of problems without them. (Probably because on of the pins has a very loose spring)

3) I should have set the time and date on one or all of the times it prompted me when I was having trouble and continually rebooting/powercycling. Now I can not boot retail XBOX dashboard and this is apparently a known issue.

Questions:

1) I think I need slayers to fix the Retail XBOX boot so I can play games again, does this sound correct? Where can I get it?

Edit, found it on Limewire although it has the wrong MD5 hash

2) What do I need to do different to use 160Gig hard drive? I was able to upgrade the drive to a 40 Gig using Xenium OS but it fails with the 160.

If you still need Slayer's Evox, PM me. You have to edit the bios or something to use a hard drive larger than 120gb. You should find your answer on www.xbox-scene.net, i swear by that site.
