Windshield Trim Gap - Click HERE for Original Thread

I recently had my windsheild replaced after finding the crack it had was unreparable.

Before the repair guy started, he pointed out that the plasic cowl/trim at the base of the windshield was separated from the glass by a quarter inch along the whole width. And it was even worse in one place in front of the passenger side.

He said it was caused by hot sun warping the plastic. Indeed the piece looks uneven, as though warped.

We had him go ahead and replace the glass anyway (OEM glass installed by Safelite).

Now I'm looking at that gap and realize it looks horrible. And I'm worried about it collecing water or whatever.

Honestly, I never noticed that the gap had formed. And looking at other MDXs I see in parking lots, I know that piece is supposed to lie right against the glass.

I'm thinking of bringing it to the Acura dealer to have them replace. But first wanted to know if anyone else had this problem. Could it be a warranty issue? It's a 2003.

(PS- how smart of the repair guy to point that out BEFORE he touched anything. Otherwise, I'd probably have blamed him and his company for something that wasn't their fault.)

That plastic piece is just for a "finished" look. It doesn't actually seal the water in or out. As long as the new windshield was indeed replaced properly...you will have no problems.

Good point! The repair person is very smart and observant.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm not really concerned about leakage, mostly I wanted to know if this warping/gaping of the trim piece was a common thing on the MDX.

However, if I look down into the 1/2" gap (if I put my cheek to the windshield and look down), I can see the fresh bead of a black sealant. I'm a bit worried that water will collect along the edge of the bead, as it has nowhere else to run off.

The repair guy sounded like he'd seen this before. I just wanted to know if anyone else had a similar problem.

I'd take it back to the dealer and have them take a look at it.

The windshield on my 04 is being replaced as I type this. The repair guy mentioned the trim piece gap too.

I just went out to check on things and he asked me if the windshield had been replaced before. He said it looked like it had. I bought it at the end of last year "Certified" from an Acura dealer so I don't know about the history of the glass. That's 2 windshields on a 1.5 -year old car and 23,000 miles. Jeez

My MDX is 4 years old and 105K miles. I'm on my 3rd or 4th windshield. I love getting new ones because suddenly everything looks clear again. No more pitted windshield reflecting/refracting all the light and making it hard to see. Plus windshield wipers work much better on a new windshield. If I could, I'd get a new windshield every 40-50K miles. Instead I just get a new one when a stone creates a big crack and insurance will pay for it.

I have seen many X's with the uneven gap between the front plastic cowl and windshield. Some worse then others. My X has small gaps in a few spots. I think it was a poor attachment design personally.

I'm bringing this back from the dead. My 01 has a horrendous gap as described in this thread. I just looked at an 06 and the fit is much tighter. My gap allows numberous leaves and other debris into the engine bay.

Has anyone gotten this piece replaced under warr or ext. warr?

Thanks,
Brian

i've had my windshield replaced once with Acura glass (says honda though like the rest of the windows).

took it to the dealer later as I noticed the gap too. they replaced the trim piece and it still had the same gap. they offered to install another one, and I decided i'd live with it as i'd likely get the same result. now i'm out of warranty so i'd think a third time before getting the same outcome.

Love to know if anyone got it replaced and the gap went away.

My attempt at having the windshield cowl replaced under my ext warranty was rejected since "trim" is not covered.
