| I have a 2001 and it's has approx. 74,000 miles on it. I bought it used and everything seemed to be fine until about 3 weeks after we bought it the engine light went on along with the VTM light every once in a while. I went and had it tested and it was the EGR. Not sure as to which part of the EGR it is, but I know it has to do with the emmissions. My husband mentioned to me that it could be the type of gas that was put in it before. He says it calls for Premium for a reason. He had this problem with our Honda Accord. So we now think that if you don't put in the right gas that you're supposed to that it will mess up the emmissions. Is that true? Now I continue to put 91 in it even though it doesn't cost close to $50 to fill my tank. :3: |

DianaJPacheco,
Welcome. As far as using premium 91 as recommended by your owners manual many here have used lower grades of gas and have had no problems to speak of. If you want to go 87 it shouldn't be a problem. If you want to stay with 91 that's fine too. Now whether the EGR goes out due to gas not being 91 is news to me. Maybe one of the more sage members can pipe in on that.
Enjoyyour X. I've bought mine at 76K and no problems so far. Well maybe my rear ac went out but that's another thread
 |

The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Knocking can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting.
The use of 87 octane will not do anything to the Emission control systems, the only thing it will affect is performance. The owners manual only recomends 91 or above octane, it is not a requirement. The ECM (electronic Control Module) will adjust the timing of the engine to prevent detonation (pinging or knocking). So the Engine will have more power with 91 Octane VS 87 Octane.

If you VTM-4 Lock light and your Check Engine light are coming on at the same time or one is delayed for whatever reason then it could be the second gear recall that Acura issued for the 2001 MDX.
To find out this information go to your local Acura dealership and ask if that recall has been done on your MDX, if not have it repaired and both lights should quit coming on.
Be aware this is CHECK ENGINE light not MAINTENANCE REQUIRED. |

| Well I had the check engine light tested and I was told it is my EGR. Now as far as the VTM light ... I have no idea what is wrong with it. Could it be the gear recall? |
