Well I'm happy I came through this board. You just answered my question on another board that I posted. Now I know why my check engine light is on with the VTM light. I did get it tested and it is the EGR. I have noticed that when I press on the gas, it doesn't take off as quick as it did when I got it. There is a noticeble difference that's for sure. Should I just replace the Valve and the sensor? Just to be safe? Can it have anything to do with the type of gas you put in it? It calls for Premium, but I have a feeling that if you put anything other than 91 your emmissions will be all screwed up.

The EGR valve retails for $108.58 and the gasket is $5.35. The EGR is very easy to replace, it is held on by 2 bolts and 1 electrical connector. It takes about 15 minutes to replace, good luck! It seems to be a common item to replace on most model years of the MDX. I have replaced mine twice, once under warranty by the dealer at 30,000 and the next time I did it at 67,000 miles.

Of the over 48000 miles on my '01 MDX, probably at least 30000 have been on 87 octane gas. No emission problems at yearly inspection times, no other noticeable problems. My EGR valve did fail once, and was replaced under warranty. FYI, my wife's '99 Accord V6 has had the EGR warranty increased to 80000 miles (methinks that means Honda knows they have a problem). Even if you're out of warranty, you should ask your Acura dealer to replace it out of goodwill.

DianaJPacheco,

With gas prices at an all-time high, save your money and run your MDX with regular gas. The owner's manual only recommends premium. It is not mandated by the Honda gods.:)
