Folks, hey.
i cannot find my valey key (i used it like two weeks ago) and i'm afraid i lost it close to home. what are my options? can i deactivate one key and replace it with another? do i have to replace all locks? how much do you think it would cost me?
please any ideas...
Thanks, Vlad:confused: |

Since the valet key only works on the ignition, you could get a separate key (and matching ignition tumbler) made.
Use that key only for the ignition.
That would seem to be the cheapest way out of it.
Even if someone had your valet key (and know it belongs to YOUR car), they could only drive off if you left your car unlocked or they broke in.
If you go with a unique ignition key, it would have be done with an acura key that had the chip for turning off the immobilizer.
But maybe the proximity of the original key on the same key chain, would be sufficient, I don't know. |

The valet key does open and lock the door too. It just doesn't work on the glovebox lock. |

Yup, Zafer's right, I've tried this out. Unfortunately, if you're convinced someone has the key and knows it's your car, your best option is a total re-key. :( |

| Yeah kind of a dumb feature IMO. Only helpful as a spare key now that someone in my house has misplaced their key. |

So about the only thing the valet key does is to keep them out of your glove compartment! That's kind of useless. If I had something that valuable to put in my glovie I would take it with me.
Dang! |

| Any idea what total re-keying may cost? |

Frankly unless it's just to keep the dealer or a valet out of there, I wouldn't lock it. I'd rather lose whatever's in there than have a nice crowbar mark on my dash. |

Nope, but I bet resident guru Tim can give you an idea... hondacuraworld@aol.com. |

I agree with you 100%. I suggest valet keys are more useful if you have a trunk, as it will not unlock same. However, with my TL, it's the same result as the lock mechanism to shut off the power to the trunk power opener is in the glove box. |

You could fill the door lock holes with an adhesive, that would keep a key from entering but allow the door locks to still work :4:............but I wouldn't recommend it :headshake. |

1. Get another Acura key, cut to fit your locks (make it a valet key if you wish).
2. Have the car programmed to match your new key (it might take programming all keys (5 is the most it will take)). IIRC, this has to be done by the dealer, unlike programming for new remote fobs, which can be done by the owner.
3. Now, your keys will all open the door and start the engine, etc., but the lost/stolen key (if it ever shows up) won't start the engine -- whoever has it can get into your car, but can't drive it off. The engine will crank, but won't fire, since the immobilizer turns off the fuel pump. |
