Xbox 360, the next version of Microsoft's game console is scheduled for release for this Christmas. What's interesting for me (and news to me) is that MS uses IBM's PowerPC processors in their console. In fact they are using 3.2GHz PowerPC processors in its new Xbox 360.

Which means that there will be 3.2GHz + PowerMacs by christmas time too :1:

Both are good news anjan, I read that it will be available by Thanksgiving. Do you know what the price point will be? From what I read it'll be worth upgrading to XBOX 360. Also looks like a G5.

The Xbox is supposed to be $399 since MS lost a lot of $$ selling the first one dirt cheap. The PowerMac will just do a shift - so the 2.7 now will be the same as 3.2, and the 2.0 will be phased out.

If what I read is true... users will apparently have access to free gaming with the idea that they'll purchase games online or add features to games they have. That way MS can make XBOX a center of the entertainment system.

So with the production of these processors leads me to believe it's only the PC business of IBM that's being sold to the Chinese company ? I love the wife's Thinkpad. Feels better in my hands than most other laptops.

$399 is too high. I doubt many people will buy it at that price. Yes, they lost money on the XBOX hardware, but it's the razor idea. Sell the razor cheap, and make money on the replacement blades. They will want to sell the XBOX as cheap as possible, and then get people to subscribe to XBOX LIVE and other online content they will be adding.

Sony just made their announcement on the PS3. Should be out in a year. The biggest factor to buy the PS3 over the XBOX 360 is that the PS3 will play blu-ray discs (with around 40gig capacity) while the XBOX 360 will still use standard DVD discs. Also the PS3 should double as a HD DVD player.

Closer to 50 G.

Spring release may work to their advantage. Lots of people won't buy the XBOX until they see the Sony.

Another advantage for PS3 is the use of the Cell processor developed by IBM, Apple, and Sony. Even though the other two are using IBM's PowerPC processors, Cell is known to be very powerful, starting around 4GHz per core. I can't wait to try out the graphics on these consoles :D

And you're right, I'm not buying without checking out the other....

I am not buying either unless they allow open development or until a mod chip comes out so you can run unsigned code.

There are a lot of creative programmers out there. XBMC is awesome.

TiVo is going about this the right way, free sdk and allow free development to enhance the platform.

Well Nintendo announced their Revolution system. It will have wireless controllers and access via built-in wireless to a library of games from as far back as the original NES. It will be the size of a stack of 3 DVD cases. No specifics yet on the technical stuff but the processor is being developed by IBM and the graphics card is ATI.

Except if they deviate from their past, Nintendo also uses the PowerPC processor. So the chances are they will use the 970MP multi-core processor around 3.2GHz. Of course, it'll be interesting to see how they tweak the hardware different from Microsoft.

One thing Nintendo is supposedly working very hard at for their Revolution console is creating games catered to adults. They really missed out on the gamecube by pretty much making only kid games. All the kids who played with the original NES and SNES are now in their 20s and 30s. And they lost that huge market by not making more mature games as their customers grew up.

It looks like we have a price! Microsoft corporate VP J Allard has confirmed rumors of the Xbox 360 being in the $300 range, saying the console will “be in the neighborhood” of US$300. That's not too bad.

pretty steep....I think I'll wait awhile & see if the price drops, thanks for the update anjan :7:
