Possible Problem With Trip Computer - Click HERE for Original Thread

I was wondering if I can get some advice. I have a 2005 MDX Touring (without Nav) that I purchased in April and now has about 1,500 miles. I notice my trip computer range calculation following a fill up of gas seems incorrect. My MPG is indicating about 19 mpg. When I fill up the tank the estimated range calculates 220 miles. Typically when I fill up the tank the fuel needle gage is past the F indication. on the second driving occasion after fill up, I notice that after starting the car, the range now indicates over 320 miles. Perhaps as I drive and use fuel, the fuel gage position gets back in range to the full indication which gives a proper voltage for the trip computer.

Is there a possible problem with going out of range on the fuel tank position voltage causing a poor calculation on the trip computer or is there a more significant problem with the trip computer.

Is this a common occurance with this system.

Can any one advise?

Every time you fill up the computer has to reset itself. It takes a seemingly long time to get back to what appears a reasonable miles to go calculation. Nothing unusual about your vehicle.

The trip computer and the fuel gauge have no common connection, other than for reset when full. The "miles" input for the computer comes straight from the speedometer input, and the "fuel consumed" input comes from the engine computer (primarily from the fuel injector controls). The calculations are apparently made from the "most recent few miles" of driving, and are averaged out over the tankful. If you were driving in heavy traffic for several miles before refilling, the new "miles remaining" could be low. After several miles of highway driving, the "miles remaining" would be based on that mpg, and could be much higher -- which is what you're seeing. Sounds to me like everything is working OK.

BTW, the fuel gauge position is related to the "need fuel" light that comes on when you're nearing empty.

Why not just press 'reset' ? My range is usually ready right after I fill up but the economy isn't.

Thanks for the input and feedback on how the system works. Good to see it's functioning normally. Other than this, I am extremely pleased with the vehicle to date.
