| I want to thank this forum for helping me solve the idle problem with my 2001 MDX. I had the engine light and vtm-4 light come on and took my mdx to a local place that only repairs honda/acura vehicles and the said the obd code suggested the problem was a bad oxygen sensor. Being nice guys, they suggested that I take it to the dealer and see if they would replace it under warranty since I only had 41000 miles on it and was only a month out of warranty. I called the dealer and they told me to wait until the light came on again before they would diagnose it. Two weeks later the lights came on and I took it in. They called and said that all the fuel injectors needed to be replaced for $800 and that they would not guarantee it would be fixed. I told him that I had gotten on this site and that a lot of people had problems with their egr valves. He proceeded to tell me that he was dealing with reality and not hearsay. I took it back to the other repair shop and the egr code came up on the obd scanner and I asked them to replace the egr valve and it solved all the problems. The mdx runs great now with no idle roughness. thanks again for your help |

Pennster,
Can you tell us which dealer you were dealing with? And give a plug to the repair shop that did its best for you. Thanks.
Interesting to note that 'faulty fuel injectors' are covered by the federal emissions warranty, which is separate from the car manufacture warranty. EGR valve is part of that federal emmissions warranty also. |

| Isn't the EGR valve part of the polution control system? I think it's covered under warranty |

Some emission control Items are covered under a seperate warranty to 7/70,000 miles or 8/80,000. The normal warranty is 4/50,000. The EGR is covered for 4/50,000, you can see the warranty online at the owners link at this url http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/Docume...books/E2313.pdf . You may have to have a owner link ID to view it.

I too would like to thank the people who posted their EGR valve information on this site. I had the SAME EXACT problems with the VTM-4/Check Engine lights coming on, the P1491 code along with some of the signs discussed on these threads. ('01 MDX, 71K).
I called Bob Howard Acura in Edmond Oklahoma and was told that it would cost me $80 to have the car "hooked up" to the computer (like fair compensation for pushing in a plug and letting a computer tell you what's wrong is $80...give me a break!). They then told me that they've never heard of EGR valve problems with the MDX. I told them about this forum and how seemingly hundreds, if not more, are having this same problem. When he said he doesn't buy into chat room information on the internet I let him have my Ace in the hole where MSN's model research details how the EGR valve and the Evaporative Emissions Bypass Solenoid are problematic on the MDX.

I called my local mechanic (Ranchwood Autoworks in Yukon) and they told me they would check the car with the computer, if all it needed was the EGR valve and gasket there would be no charge for the diagnostics, but if something more showed then they would charge me....fair enough.
Customer service at Bob Howard Acura in Edmond Oklahoma is non-existent. Their main objective is to rip you off! |

I have posted this before:
The EGR failing seems to be a common occurance, this is the second failure on my 2001. The part is not all that expensive at $93 for the EGR and gasket and takes only 10 to 15 minutes to fix. It is just very annoying to have to replace it every 30,000 miles. I have read plenty of posts where prople on this board have paid $250 to $350 to replace the EGR. That is a ripoff, plain and simple! With a part that costs $93 at retail and less then a half an hour labor to replace it should cost no more than $140 or so to replace.
I understand a diagnostic fee, but they should waive the fee or discount it, if you get the vehicle repaired at there facility.

Does anyone suggest just having the EGR changed every 30,000 miles as preventative maintenance? What is the max life on these?
Just trying to stay ahead of any problems. |

My 2001 MDX recently was in an accident. Happened on April 14 and the bodyshop still have my vehicle. Everything is done except that now the vehicle idles rough and the ABS light is coming on and off. The body shop dropped it off at Tustin Acura and they are waiting on the part.
The dealer said that it was some kinda valve..I'm assuming it is the EGR valve. What I want to know is do you guys think that the ABS light is also associated with the other lights when the EGR valve is bad?
Or is the ABS sensor maybe bad on my vehicle because of the accident? |

Very typical dealer rip-off trick. They know exactly what is wrong, but would like to get more money by doing useless "repair". They may not even really replace the non-falty parts. They just want to get your money and hey, I already told you in advance that it may not fix your problem, it's "YOU" that still want me to do it. It's your fault, no mine.....:13:
OK, now, let me tell you that I'm pretty sure it's the timing belt and valve seals and they cost you $4000 and I guarantee it will fix your problem. (then they will replace the EGR valve and charge you $4000 and tell you, sir, it's the best decision you ever made, you are so smart to protect your investment by doing this. :16: ) (And, what they wouldn't say to you is : Oh, of course, thanks for the donation, idiot.)
I am glad you didn't fall for that. |
