ATF Filler Bolt hard to remove - Click HERE for Original Thread

OK, I'm doing an ATF change and after trying so hard to remove the fu????? filler bolt, I ruined it and rounded the bolt's edges. Now, how will I be able to remove it. Well, the only choice I have is bring it to the dealer and hopefully they have a special tool that can remove it. I'm sure this is not the first time it happened. I wonder how they gonna do it?

Sears sells a Craftsman socket for removing bolts/nuts that have been damaged. These work very well. Other tool brands may also have such a tool.

There are many kludge methods of removing such as using a punch, chisel, etc., but most of the time these just further damage the bolt.

Go buy the correct tool and be done with it. Cheaper than the dealer.

Just a little advice for those removing the 17mm transmission filler cover on the top of the transmission just behind the battery for the first time. Use a 6 point socket and "not" a 12 point. This will give you a better grip on the bolt head. A 1/2" drive will also aid in the removal as it requires a long extension to reach the cover bolt.

For a bolt that has a torque spec of 33 ft lbs I too found it very hard to remove the first time I did a transmission fluid change.

I used the handle off my handyman jack as a breaker bar in order to get the leverage to break the bolt loose. No way could I use just the handle of the socket wrench to break it loose.

Thanks a lot for all your help. To give you an update, I brought the car to a Honda dealer hoping they could remove it for me but unfortunately, they don't have the tool to do the job and so they have to use the dipstick hole to refill. They told me that an option for me would be a technician to look at it and charge me an hourly rate of $128.00. They said they need to remove parts that's obstructing it and they will use a wrench. Anyways, I'm going to sears and get the "damage bolt remover". Had anyone tried the tool yet? and does it work?

It works very well. Has been on the market for a number of years.

Alternatively you could use a pipe wrench. You know the ones with those seizing teeth as you turn them harder and harder. You'll also have to throw the damaged bolt away and replace it.

Just use an EZ out. If they'll take out broken head bolts, they'll take out anything.

I never take the bolt off when I change the the ATF. Just get yourself a couple of funnels, one that will fit into the dip stick neck and another loger funnel to position above the funnel in the neck. Pour the fluid into the upper funnel and guide the fluid so it spills down on to the lower funnel where it will guide it down the tube. Sure it may take five minutes longer to get all the fluid in but it certainly saves a lot of hassel trying to get the darn filter bolt off.

If your trying to fill the trans after draining it and the 17mm atf filler bolt is too tight, try removing the countershaft speed sensor which is held down by a 10mm mounting bolt. It's located just right of the atf filler plug. That's another place where you can refill the trans.
