I havent seen many topics on this, but just thought I'd share with ya'll
IIRC, the manual suggests 105k miles before changing the spark plugs... Being a non-believer of "super-long life spark plugs", I decided to go ahead and change them at 60k. Upon doing so, I ran into 2 surprises:
1) The stock plugs are Denso Iridium plugs. I'm not sure if these are the normal off the shelf Denso Iridiums, but I use these on my track car, and change them every 15k miles haha
2) The plugs were (visually speaking) in very good condition. Most plugs I've seen after 30k miles appear to be much worse than this set at 60k
So I was just about ready to kick myself for going through this trouble... but I just went ahead and changed them out.
After completing the task, I took it out for a test drive. Amazingly, I felt a world of a difference! Not only did it feel stronger, but the instantaneous mpg meter read slightly higher than usual, whether highway or street. Of course the power difference might be entirely in my head, but the mpg shouldn't be wrong. I usually pay very close attention to the meter when driving.
Couple quick tips for you DIY'ers:
- let your car cool down! I let mine sit for an hr, thinking it would be nice and fresh, I've never been so wrong. My entire arm has those reddish pink burn marks from contact with the IM lol. Also, take off the plastic valve cover and leave the hood open to let the IM underneath cool off. this would save you lots of grief.
- since I'm used to working on 4 cyl cars, the MDX was a real pain for me. Standing on a stool, bending over the engine, and reaching in behind the motor for a few minutes at a time would severely hurt my back haha. Just make sure to take some time off and straighten your back and walk around for a bit every once in while.
Feel free to ask and questions or whatever. |

If it's 2002 or older, I'd say the Iridiums aren't OEM.
I have been thinking about putting them in mine...IF my transmission problems are finally fixed and I end up keeping it.
Just replaced three shift solenoids today...fingers are crossed!
Actually, it's a 2003 model. This car has never been worked on by anyone other than me since purchased new. I wish I had kept the plugs... maybe they're still in my trash can lol |
