I was looking at the bike racks for the MDX..the one that attaches to the hitch and the one on the roof rack.

what do people suggest is better? just wondering before I buy....
any positive or negative experiences would be appreciated

canuck901,

In my opinion, roof rack type bike rack is a better option. The advantage of a roof mount rack is that it will not interfere with the MDX hatch opening and closing. Also, fork mount type bike carriers provide a more secure way to carry your bikes, in comparison to either upright roof carrier such as Acura's or hitch carrier that is available from either Yakima or Thule.

While using the upright mount may be slightly more convenient because you do not have to remove the front wheel, I find fork mounts to be much more stable than the upright mounts. They are also easier to load on MDX roof since the bike is lighter with the front wheel removed.

Here are just a few previous discussion threads on the topic of using different types of bike racks on MDX:

Well, it depends - there are hitch racks that swing away for access if that's an issue. Hitch rack is also better if there's a chance that you will forget your bikes are on top of your MDX when you pull into the garage (happens all the time according to the manager at my local bike shop).

I have a Thule Trailblazer hitch rack and it works fine. Saves you from having to hoist the bike to the top of the car too.

I have a Thule Hitching Post that I got from REI for about $200. It works great. I like having it on the hitch, rather than the roof. When I had cars, I always put my bikes on the roof. It wasn't hard to reach (Acura Integra was low) and it was very secure. With my MDX, I either put the bike inside (if just one or maybe two bikes and a local ride) or use the trailer hitch. The Thule one doesn't sway, holds 4 bikes securely, and it swings down so you can open the hatch easily. I don't fancy trying to climb on top of the MDX to secure a bike up there. Plus with roof mounts you definitely run the risk of driving into something (I did it once in a parking garage and my ex-wife did it once in our garage).

i have a yakima kingpin 5. its just what i wanted. The arms swings down if your not using it and the post comes down also if you need to open the trunk. If you ask me I think its much better than the roof rack especially on an SUV, not sure how many bikes you're planning to carry but i think kingpin comes in 2, 3, 5. Good luck and keep riding.
