Bar code inventory management, who uses it? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Bringing Hondacuraworld into the 21st century (well, okay, the 90's), I'm attempting to get some type of bar code scanner that will read the code data off the Acura and Honda bar codes, and translate the info into a printable database, or something that I can download to my inventory management system. The trick is to try to develop such a system for under a few grand.

By any chance could someone out there that has a bar code scanner scan an Acura part code tag and let me know what information is contained in there?

And those of you that have integrated such an inventory tool into your business (in a non-prepackaged version, something you had to make up yourself), how did you do it and what did you use? :)

Have you tried using google ? Not everything I've punched in comes up. But you can also add stuff to their database. Just enter the whole code, including the small check digits into the search window. Or just go to www.upcdatabase.com Not sure how you could download it though.

I'm not sure if that helps but at least you can see if anything comes up.

There are venders out there who specialize in providing packages for invenory control. They will supply you with a complete system of software and hardware that is ready to use. I am sure that here is at least one who specializes in the automobile industry.

When necessary these systems will print bar code labels for you the place on products that do not come with labels.

I am surprised that your parts department does not already have this capability. Are you integrated into that department or do you operate seperately? Does not Honda have a retail system available for you to purchase.

The amount of inventory and the turnover is what drives the type of system that you need. I operated a retail business for many years using an inventory control system with manual input. At the end of each day the sales and purchases were manually entered. My system contained about 4,000 stock numbered items (commonly called SKUs) and around 300 daily sales. It took about 30 to 40 minutes each day to enter data with a longer "catch up" time at the end of each week.

If you are only dealing with a few hundred items and a few dozen sales a day itis probably not worth the cost and time for installing a new system.

Honda itself bar codes all packages, but doesn't have a comprehensive system that they sell to the dealers to read them into their inventory. Half the battle would be to see what info is contained on these bar codes, as there are no numbers on them.

To inventory IT equipment, we use iPAQ handhelds with a Symbol barcode scanner attachment, and we use a Zebra label printer to print out the inventory lables. The code wizards made up an in-house Oracle database that it uploads to and the information is accessible via the handhelds, a web interface, or a custom app to generate detailed reports. I'll try to remember to either take a scanner home or rip the label off one of my Acura boxes and bring it in and see if I can get any data off the label for you.

Nevermind what I said...they're not UPC's. Like you said, Honda bar codes.

Our company purchased a few Symbol PPT2700 http://www.symbol.com/products/mobi...pc_ppt2700.html (obsolete model) from e-bay 2 years ago for about $200 each.

Recently, I had assigned to customize the barcode scanner to perform inventory control. The scanner is Windows CE 3.0 based and found this software very simple and easy to customize. http://www.syware.com/lp/visualce/

I created the form that read and write directly into MS Access database without writing any codes. Although the barcode symbology on Honda/Acura parts may not be UPC, I believe if they fall within those commonly used barcode type (Code39, ITF14, Interleave 2 of 5, to name a few), the Symbol scanner can scan and store it without problem. I will try to bring the scanner home tonight to scan a few parts in my X to confirm that.

Good luck.

I checked at lunch, and the only Acura box I found only had a single label on it (other than shipping labels). I scanned it, and it just returned the same number as on the label. Image attached. If this isn't what you were looking for, I can look around some more after work.

Tim, I work in the Logistics industry and Bar coding/scanning is an essential part of our business. We use several different types because our customers demand specific features. There are plenty of WMS locator/inventory control systems out there. The more popular are Logitech, Accuplus, and then there are the more sophisticated like SAP (very hard to find people who are proficient with this one though.)
Since you ship via UPS or FedEx, you may want to see what they are willing to share with you. Good luck
