Hello MDXers,
One feature of bringing your Honda to back to the dealer for service is that they have got a device called a HDS to diagnose the status of the engine.
However, I'm the type that will never bring my car back to dealer for personal reasons. I just want to ask anyone knowledgeable out here whether it is possible to survive without having to hook one of these HDSs to the engine for the life of the car?
I heard that VTEC engines have to be tuned or something after 100k km using this device. But I thought that newer engines are continously self-tuning? Some say that the HDS is used everytime you bring the car for service to check the engine integrity.
If I do need to use this HDS, when should I bring the car to the dealer for service. Is it at 40k km or 80k km or 100k km?
Thanks in advance.

HDS = Honda Diagnostic System
The HDS does have special capabilities that other scan tools do not such as checking the srs unit, the immobilzer system, body electrical, etc.....
The Dealer may use the HDS when you bring your X in with a problem. MIL (malfunction indicator light) stays on car running rough is an example.
Don't think they would have to use it during a routine maintenance service. |

Thanks master_tech,
Now it gives me a peace of mind. The way they wrote it in the maintenance log manual is that you should bring it to Honda to be serviced because we have the HDS capabilities that others do not. But now that I know that this is BS, I would be happy DIYing myself for the life of the car. I'll just bring it to them when I get that MIL problem (he he he....). I'm just not sure whether they use this for some sort of engine tuning as well though?
:D :p :D :p :) |

| For scheduled services...the HDS will not be used. The HDS or the old PGM-FI tester can be used to diagnose problems when one of the warning lights on your dashboard come on. Other scan tools can check the computer for codes when your check engine light, but only these Honda/Acura specific tools can get into the other systems in your vehicle. A common use for such a case is if the owner loses a key or just wants to add a key. The HDS or PGM-FI is the best way to program or delete a key for use. |

Good post SuperTech!
Have you played around with the pocket tester yet? |

I hate it. It seems like every time I try to use that thing it always wants to have the active sync cable connected and needs to check for updates. All I want to do sometimes is quickly find out what code it is so I know if the advisor needs to write a warranty ticket or sell diagnosis time. And having to go update that dumb $1500 palm pilot all the time isn't quick. PGM-FI tester has gotten all the updates it'll ever need, and it's still pretty portable. Just can't check the newest cars anymore. But it's better than lugging that bulky HDS into the car and pushing the brightness up button only to realize that it's not getting any brighter. |
