Interesting link, though that was college all-stars (or soon to be pros), against a pro team. I think a pro team straight up againt a college team would be more lopsided...though I suppose you could argue teams like USC are all-stars! |

| I do not think any single college team would beat a Pro team now. Their only hope for a win would be to have an all-star college team (which is basically a rookie type pro team put together in a short timeframe) play against one of the door-mat Pro teams. |

USC vs Texas.
#1 vs #2
2 undefeated teams.
3 Heisman finalists (most likely).
Granddaddy of the bowl games.
National Championship.
What more can you ask for?
I have 2 tickets to the game and I will be there rooting for my Trojans. |

I for one could ask for the following: some type of real playoff for the top teams as opposed to everybody sitting idle for a month getting rusty before they play one last game.
These computer decided rankings leave a lot to be desired. Just look how often the top seed team does not win the NCAA basketball tourney. |

I purchased 2 option tickets that USC would make the Rose Bowl for $100 each through www.theticketreserve.com at the very beginning of the season. It was a gamble, since if USC didn't make the Rose Bowl, then I lose $200. But since they made the Rose Bowl, I get to purchase 2 tickets at face value ($175). The site sold about 2,500 options per school. The site also acts like a market, I can sell my tickets for market value. Once the Rose Bowl pairing is officially announced today, I will pay the remaining $350 for my 2 tickets and they will be mailed to me. Then I can go to the game or sell. Since this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, I will probably go to the game. |

Only 3 invited for the Heisman award ceremony. Poll at this site shows > 70 % of folks who believe Bush will get the award (out of 43,000 + votes). I concur. Cannot wait to watch the highlight reels they show at the ceremony---3 great players for 2005. |

Yeah... Bush is a near lock to win the Heisman.
He averaged 8.9 yards per carry... that's amazing. He had 1,658 yards while basically splitting carries with Lendale White. Can you imagine the type of year he would have had if he had been the featured back? Probably 2,400+ yards and maybe 30+ TDs. He's definitely a special, only comes along once every 10 years type of player. I'm just glad to have been able to see him in person a few games each year. I know that whenever he touches the ball (whether on a handoff, a catch, a punt or kickoff return) all 90,000 people in the Coliseum stand up and hold their breath. And whenever he jukes a defender, does a spin move, or hurdles someone, the crowd just looks at each other and shakes their head in amazement. He's that good. I hope he has a great career in the NFL. |

It's an interesting paradox, the Heisman Trophy - it's supposed to go to the most outstanding football player in college each year. But it's interesting to note that Heisman winners are not a lock to make the NFL and those that do, more often than not, are not superstars. Just look at the last 10 winners, not a true superstar among them, altho the jury may still be out on Palmer, and Leinart has yet to go pro, but White & Crouch are not on rosters, George & Williams are washed up and who knows where Wuerffel went.
I agree Bush will probably win the Heisman this year, and turn pro. But in NFL terms, he's a tweener and I'm not sure he'll be an impact player at the next level. I think LenDale White will be a better (more successful) NFL player since he's a legitimate RB at the next level. Don't get me wrong, I love watching Reggie in college games, but I'm not convinced he'll have nearly the success in the NFL. Reminds me of Rodney Peete & Troy Aikman. Peete was the runner up in the Heisman race to Barry Sanders, with Aikman a distant 3rd. While Peete was the more successful college player, there can be no doubt that Aikman was the better pro, while Peete was just a good backup. For Reggie's sake, I hope I'm wrong on this one . . . |

Nice link - interesting reading. Not only the top 13 busts, but also had the top 13 boons. SI is not perfect, they mistaken said that Palmer led 'SC to a Nat'l Title in 2002 - more like a BCS Orange Bowl win and #4 in the final AP/CNN rankings. Nice to see 3 Trojans in the top 10 and none in the bottom 13 - tough act for Leinart & Bush to follow . . . |

Something is wrong with that poll. Maybe they were voting on tallest! :D I agree it definitely does not make sense. It's a 3 man race and more than likely only a two man race. Leinhart had his fame last year. It will probably be the other two guys - Bush and Young. |

Looks like you're in the corner of the end zone, not bad.
But you got screwed by being in the 1st row, your vantage point will be horrible when the action is down at the other end of the field. On the other hand, maybe you'll see Bush score a TD right in front of you . . . |

Yeah... I wish I was higher up so I would be able to see more of the field. But I can't really complain...
The Rose Bowl is setup so that the first 11 rows are A through K. So Row 1 is actually the 12th row. |

So MDteX, any pregame comments or predictions ???
This has to be the MOST hyped college football game that I can recall, hopefully the game will live up to the hype. It looks like the line is steady at USC -7. Seems like alot of Texas betters are staying on the sidelines. Last year, a flood of OU betters brought the line down to pick'em at kickoff, needless to say, Vegas made a killing. I will admit that I am getting tired of the media's constant hyping and pumping, but I guess that's what they get paid to do . . .
I don't think there will be alot of scoring, so here goes:
31 - 13 . . . USC . . . |
|
|
| R Stevens |
I'm picking Texas by 10. Bush is the best college running back I've ever seen , but Texas' defense will be the toughest USC has faced this year.
To everybody going to the game...have a great time. Last night's Orange Bowl was loads of fun, except for the pathetic half time show and the numbing commercials in the stadium. Almost five hours from kickoff to the game winning field goal!
Best part of the this trip was the Nittany Lion win and the week stay in South Beach. Worst part was the rental Dodge Caravan. What a POS! Can't wait to get back to my MDX.
Go Penn State and Big Ten....winner of two of four BCS bowls! |

Prediction:
Texas- 27 over USC-24 |
|

| I'm going with Texas, since Ohio State put up way more yards on Notre Dame (617!) than USC did, and Texas beat Ohio State. |

| Let me be the first to congratulate the Texas Longhorns on their National Championship. Vince Young truly is for real, and may be ready for the NFL right now. I never thought I'd say this, but Mack Brown outcoached Pete Carrol, and Pete should be second guessing himself for some of the decisions he made in this game. As for USC, no regrets - it was a great run . . . |

How true it is. The Texas interception in the end zone and then the 2 stops on fourth down made the difference. USC had their own stop on fourth down too. But they didn't make the most important 4th down stop at the end of the game.
What an exciting game! Both teams played their hearts out. I was glad to see Texas hold Bush in check. I didn't think USC could hold Young in check and they didn't. Lineart played a great game as did White. I think White has more NFL upside than Bush. He is big, strong and fast.
I don't second guess Carroll at all for going for it with 2 minutes to go. USC is the defending champs, a huge offensive line and White in the backfield. Most of the time 1 yard is a gimme and normally much more. But again USC had not seen a defense like Texas.
Young is a special athlete. His size and speed is awesome. I hope he comes back. Without him Texas chance of getting back to the championship game will be extrememly low. I was shocked when I saw the disparity in the Heisman voting. I still think Young was the better player but the vote wasn't even close which makes you wonder what the voters were watching. Last night was not even close either. Young had the best of Bush by far.
The run USC had is incredible and probably won't be equalled in many more years. It was fantastic game to watch. I think Texas likes the Rose Bowl! |

You didn't give too much respect to the Texas offense. Too bad I didn't see this before the game so I could have made a prediction.
It was difficult listening to every so called expert predict USC. I guess that's why they play the game. And what a game it was. One of the best chapmionship games ever. |

| What a great game to watch as was the Penn State/Florida State game the day prior. The BCS bowl truly was the best Championship Bowl to-date with two great teams and many great players on both teams. What a great run by USC to win all the games over 3 seasons. Texas is also a special team w/ Vince Young. Looking forward to next season. |

Ditto, I don't want to hear anyone second guess Carrol for that 4th and 2. Texas wasn't stopping the run the entire 2nd half and wasn't Carrol brilliant when he went for it of 4th down against ND and made it? |

Congrats to the Longhorns. That was a great game.
But, I don't know why they didn't review Vince Young's lateral and I still think that was a fumble recovered by USC in the 4th quarter. |

cycler15 is very quiet this morning. Maybe he is still at the game or caught in traffic.
MDX05FAN - I didn't think the play was sloppy. The officiating could have been stepped a notch. How they didn't see Vince's knee down on the pitch is beyond me. The game that was sloppy was Penn State/Florida State. That was terrible. No one wanted to win.
All I can say is I need some sleep after the watching the "the never ending mess in Miami" Tuesday (and into Wednesday) and one of the most exciting Championship games last night---and of course lots of post game. :24: |

Yeah the Penn State game was worse but we can agree to disagree on the sloppy play with both of the offenses in the Rose Bowl. Guys were fumbling without being hit, dumb penalties etc. Don't get me wrong I have seen worse, just expected more out of #1 and #2 |

Good find, thats bad luck but really a poor excuse. The reason is they see the same thing we see on TV. I understand that their "replay" monitors may have been messed up but wouldn't that be a good time to stop play, say it is under review, fix the problem and go from there? If that was the last play of the game and their monitors weren't working they would have done what I said above or there would have been a riot to lose a game on a problem like that... jut my $.02  |

Well.. it was a great game and I was glad to be there!
Hats off to Texas and Vince Young. USC had no answer for him.
I don't fault Reggie Bush for making the ill advised lateral. He's a playmaker and tried to make a play... just didn't work that time.
Pete Carroll going for it on 4th and 2 was the right call. You play to win... you don't play to not lose. 9 out of 10 times White gets the necessary yardage. He was running for huge gains up the middle all game. Texas made the stop when it counted most.
2 bad calls went against USC. Vince Young's knee on the ground and forward lateral. And the incomplete pass that should have been ruled a fumble in the 4th quarter. But I'm not taking away anything from Texas. They still won the game.
USC's run the past 4 years has been amazing. I think USC fans got spoiled by all their recent success. When I was a student at USC we went 7-6 every year and had ****ty players. So I won't take anything for granted.
Pete Carroll is still recruiting the best players and has had a top recruiting class the last 4 years. So I don't expect much of a drop off in the years to come. |
|
|
| hhwc |
The bigger question is whether or not Young will turn pro. If he does, Texas WILL NOT defend their title. If he doesn't, they have a very good chance to repeat.
As for USC (being an alum), they will be very competitive for years to come (thanks to Pete Carroll's recruiting efforts).
Congrats to UT. Fight on 'SC, another BCS bowl next year? ;) |

An interesting note at the end of this article....
Big game: Texas' appearance in the Rose Bowl gave the Big 12 Conference five berths in the national championship game since the BCS started with the 1998 season. That's the most of any league. Oklahoma is 1-2 in BCS title games and Nebraska 0-1.
The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big East are tied for second place with three appearances each.
USC, in the title game for the second consecutive year, is the only Pacific-10 Conference school that has appeared in the BCS championship game.
Where is the SEC??? I did't realize how many times the big game had a team from the Big 12. |

If the SEC scheduled non conference games with other BCS teams instead of directional schools and the like, then maybe the next time an SEC school goes undefeated or 11-1 they can make it to the title game. |

Here is a quote from Bill Walsh, former coach of the San Francisco 49ers and known for his ability to judge talent, in today's LA Times.
"Walsh said that USC and Texas are so good they probably could beat some lower-echelon NFL teams."
Hmmm.... I think I have a respected coach who backs my thinking that an elite team like USC or Texas could make a game of and even beat the lower NFL teams. |

I really dont think that either team would fare very well against any NFL team. The talent of the two teams can be measured by the fact that there will not be 44 players from these two teams that eventually are drafted, and ultimately start for NFL teams. Walsh's comment, I am quite sure was simply his way of saying that the two college teams are very talented. I really doubt he actually believes that they would win against an NFL team.
I believe that the 49ers, Texans or Jets would crush either of these two teams. |
