Not another tranny! - Click HERE for Original Thread

Just got back from hiking in the local mountains and noticed something troubling on the drive home. When normally I need to downshift to 1st or 2nd gear on the on long downgrades from the mountains to let the engine help brake the X, today it held itself to 40mph while in 5th gear and sometimes I even had to accelerate going down hill to keep up with the flow of traffic! It feels as if something is holding back the vehicle like the parking brake (which wasn’t on at the time).

Had my transmission replaced at 40K and have only added about 6K miles since then. No trouble lights on the dash or any other indication of a problem. While today is the first time I’ve noticed it enough to become concerned, I first suspected something wrong the past couple of days during short city driving trips. Coming down off the mountain today made it impossible to ignore.

What can it be? Torque converter? Stuck parking brake? I’m taking it to the dealer on Tuesday after the holiday and I’m bummed because I’m in the middle of planning a driving tour of the 4-Corner states later this month and can’t take the risk of breaking down in Canyonlands National Park and having to cut-off my “tranny” if it get stuck out there in the middle of nowhere.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is going on?

IF your parking brake is dragging, at least one rear hub should be very hot after just a few minutes of driving -- you could check this easily. Does your tranny appear to operate properly -- 5 upshifts as you accelerate, each one showing lower RPMs after the shift? What were the RPMs like coming down the hill?

If there's a dragging coming from, say, a bearing in the tranny's output shaft, that should result in excessive tranny heat as well as a dragging feeling every time you take your foot off the gas.

Good luck!

THAT's what it feels like!

Don't think it's the parking brake (although I am guilty of not releasing it on several occasions...) because I drove over 100 miles today and would expect my wheel would have melted from the heat.

Thanks for the suggestions!

How about this;

"To make driving more comfortable, Grade Logic Control helps prevent gear-hunting when driving up and down hills".

Maybe that is what you were feeling, a good way to tell is, if it is no longer dragging and or stopped once you reached level ground.

Perhaps the Grade Logic Control is now faulty because it just recently started acting this way.

Not the parking brake - tested that theory this morning - rear wheels still cool after driving for 15 minutes. Planning on not driving much at all until I can get the the dealer on Tuesday.

Is it still doing it on level pavement? also check your VTM lock button to make sure it is not on!

Just trying to save you a trip to the dealer...

Wouldn't make any difference during the events described. The VTM lock button only works in R and 1 and 2 shift lever positions, and has no effect above approximately 15 mph.

Just got back from having the transmission checked and, of course, they were unable to duplicate the symptoms. They also physically checked the transmission and fluid condition, as well as diagnostic codes and found no problems.

So, I guess it was all in my head? My girlfriend also claims to have noticed the problem but perhaps she is just trying to humor me... Maybe it will improve after I replace all 4 tires next week but I'm going to buy an extended warranty soon anyway.
