Just picked up my new toy / project. A 1991 GMC Syclone. :D

I have been lusting after the little truck since they were new, and I finally got my chance. For those of you not familiar with the truck, it is an AWD 4.3L turbocharged S15. The trucks were capable of mid to low 13 second quarter mile times out of the factory. They were essentially made for one year. Mine is #2973 out of 2997. Here is a great article from Car and Driver back in 91:

It is in running condition but need a lot of help at the moment, so I will be restoring it over the next year or so. Here is a pic of what it will look like when done.

I hope that you do not keep this toy in the garage as long as I did a 1963 Triumph TR-4. I bought it in early 1981 before I retired from the Air Force. It stayed there for the next 17 years until I sold it in more pieces that it came in. The problem was I bought a business and no longer had the time to restore a car. I had reworked a 1967 El Camino and enjoyed the effort. Wanted to start another vehicle but the timing was wrong.

I was in love with those things and also the Typhoon. Somebody told me they stopped making them because too many people were tearing up the rear ends. Although I'm not quite sure how that happens if it's AWD. Neat vehicle and probably a decent collector's value too.

Thanks, I will certainly keep you all posted on the progress.

I am not sure of the exact reason the project was scrapped, I have heard that there was no plan to carry the Syclone /Typhoon into the body style change for cost reasons. I have also heard there were some issues that forced the closing of PAS who was the secondary builder of the trucks. From what I understand of the project, GM kept it from really taking off in the first place. The Syclone debut was the same year as the giant flop 454SS. Also he guys in the Corvette devision didn't like the little truck that could put it to the Vette in the 1/4 mile. The transmission and or transfer case along with the front drive shaft seem to be the weaker links. This is the reason for the 500lb cargo / 1000lb towing capacity. As far as collector value, I am sure they will go up, they are getting pretty rare these days.

And G. COLTON, I hope this project doesn't go quite as long as the Triumph....
