Before purchasing my 2004 MDX Touring in August, the salesperson pointed out how easy it was to start the car. A few months later during the winter I noticed that the car didn't start as easily. Instead of barely turning the key, I had to turn it all the way and hold it for a few seconds while the car turned over.
When I brought the car to the dealer in April, I was told that many owners complain about starting the car in the winter and that the problem couldn't be duplicated by the mechanic. I was also told that I should remove the key and insert it again after turning it over. It is now summer and the ignition performance is still the same. Turning the key over doesn't make a difference, and I have been using the same gas since I bought the car.
What kind of performance should I expect? Am I being fussy, or does my car have a problem? My car needs service and I want to bring this issue up again with the dealer but I would like to be more informed this time. Any suggestions? |

Based on reading many posts on here I would conclude that the MDX comes equiped with a less that optimal battery. Take the vehicle to a good battery shop and have them check your battery. Make sure that they check it using a simulated load. If there is any suspicion that it it not up to spec then replace it with something better than what it came with.

redgirl, welcome to our forum.
I have a couple of questions: 1) Do you mean that the engine cranks slower now than when new (sounds like rrrrrr-rrrrrr-rrrrrr instead of rrr-rrr-rrr)? Or 2) do you mean that it still cranks fairly fast, but cranks for a longer time than when new?
If 1), it may be the battery or a battery cable connection, or a cable connection to the starter.
If 2), it may be a sluggish fuel pump or perhaps a fuel filter. Try leaving the key turned to the "run" position for a few seconds before turning it to "start" -- if it then starts quickly, then it might be the pump or filter.
The "turning the key over" bit is to see if there's an immobilizer problem -- if there were, the key would never start the car in one position, but would always start it in the other. (There's more than that to the immobilizer, but in your situation nothing else would count.)
Good luck! |

I have also experienced very long crank times on my 2004 MDX Touring/Navi. Compared to other Acura/Honda vehicles that I have owned in the past, this seems unusual however, this is my first six cylinder Acura/Honda engine, and I am not sure if this is commonplace of symptomatic of a larger issue.
My MDX has 25K on it and is driven in the diverse climate of Wisconsin where we go from extremes of -15F to 95F.
The battery did test out to match the amp rating during my 15K checkup.
Thoughts anyone? |

| My 04 MDX had the same problem in winter. But in summer it seems ok. |

| My '04 Tour/Nav also experience this once in a while although not very often. |

| Thanks, G. Colton and frostyra. I think it may be related to the battery since I ran frostyra's fuel pump test which didn't solve the problem. I will have the dealer look at all these parts when I bring it in next week and will report back on the results. |
