how to remove dash & center console? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi -
I'd like to fix these 2 problems myself (I'm out of warranty). Can someone help with directions for taking apart the dash and the rear console?

Prob #1 - my son kicked the rear center console vents so now they don't move. If I can take this rear console apart, I can probably reset the vents to their proper tracks. Where are the screws or clips that hold it all together?

Prob #2 - The navigation unit joystick doesn't work in the down direction. I figure I can buy a new joystick and pop it in....but I need to know how to disassemble the dash to get at the joystick.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I looked for a DIY section and did a bit of searching but I couldn't find anything.

BTW, it is a 2001 MDX "touring"

The rear console is just snapped in with spring clips. Use a rod with a hook (there's a special tool at the dealer specifically for doing this) throught the vents to try and pop it free. Once you get it popped, there a connector for the controls you need to disconnect, and there it is.

This tool is also helpful for the center dash wood trim you need to remove to get at the screws holding the navi display/audio unit assembly. Or a plastic putty knife of somekind can be used to go between the dash and wood trim part to try and peel it up enough so that you can grab it. A few connectors have to be disconnected once the trim is away fromthe dash. Be careful with the scews holding the audio/navi assembly. If you drop them...you're screwed. Once those are off, start pulling the assembly out and you'll see the connectors you'll need to disconnect on the back of the display and radio.

That really helps. Thanks.

I don't have an exploded diagram of the navigation joystick , so I don't know if I need one or more parts. Can someone post the part names and numbers of the joystick and anything closely associated?

Also, are there any on-line stores (sponsors of this site?) that offer great prices on these type replacement parts? I know my local dealer is going to be on the high side.

www.hondacuraworld.com is a great place to get OE parts. Granted it won't be chearper per se since it is a set price from Honda at least shipping will be free.
