While the $1500 incentive is still in effect, I'd like to make an offer to my local Acura dealer (Pohanka Acura in Chantilly). It's unfortunate that I missed the special financing deal which recently expired.
I need to make an offer for an '05 MDX Touring w/ Navi and DVD ($44,545). Exterior accessories include Moonroof Visor ($132), Body Side Molding ($232), Rear Tailgate Deflector ($379), Side Steps ($549) and Fender Flares ($669). This totals to $46,506 not including sales tax, labor for installation of accessories and dealer fees.
Those familiar with Virginia's sales tax and local dealer fees, please suggest an "out-the-door" price offer.
Thanks for your help! |

| Got and MDX Tour/Nav/DVD in June from Tischer in Laurel, MD for invoice - 1500. That would be a good starting point. |

FYI, Pohanka has a processing fee of $249, Virginia Business Use Tax is .0017% of the sales price. Thats in addition to the sales tax.
For the life of me I don't know why people negotiate "out the door price" including sales tax and tags. They are fixed percentages and fees. Negotiate the negotiables:
Auto + processing fee + accessories
I think $1500 under invoice for the Auto part is a good start. Knock yourself out negotiating the accessories and processing fee.
Also, the special financing deal wasn't all that anyway 2.9% over 60 months. My credit union is doing 4.1% right now which on this vehicle would only be $23 more per month. Pretty much anyone can join a credit union these days. And well if you could do the monthly payments on a 36 month financing then the interest rate really doesn't matter that much does it? |

N228,
Do not start with the dealer showing them the $44,545 for the '05 MDX with Nav/DVD. What I did is I printed the offer that Tischer gave to 'rajarajan' which is $38,679 and brought it to the dealer near me (Karen Radley). Also, insist on the 2.9% APR for 60 months and accessories based on the internet price. I bet you they will match it. If you are interested look for Ken Lee and mention him my name (Dante). And don't forget to ask for a small give away, Acura key chain or hat. |

| I am interested in what the $1500 incentive you guys are making reference to please. I own a 2002 MDX Touring Model and am interested in looking at the 2005 models while the prices sound good.. |

| On a side note, if you want to save some money, why don't you install the side steps yourself (from Tim of course). Also, I'll never understand why people get the RES for that money when they can get a 7"+ screen portable DVD player for $150-$200 and place it on the center console when in use. I can see a lot better places to spend my money than giving it to Acura and its dealers. |

The same argument could be had for NAVI and the stereo. Fact is people love integration and will pay for it. I mean for 15+ years people have been paying $1000-$2000 for these crappy OEM stereo/CD players with paper speakers and questionable quality head units. The MDX is no exception. Whats another grand for a DVD player matter?
Not to mention, what are the long term effects (ritalin needs) of your kids only being able ride in a vehicle with a DVD player running continuously.
The bigger question is how much of this fully integrated crap is going to work after you've had the vehicle for 6-10 years? I mean when your AC and everything else doesn't work anymore because of a short in the NAVI unit, whats that going to cost to replace $3000+? Its going to make a blown transmision look cheap. |

| There is a rumored $1500 rebate that the dealer gets from Acura. If it's still valid, you should be able to get your car really cheap. Try $1500 under invoice. If you get even $1000 under invoice, you are still doing good. $500 is not a whole lot of money when compared to the price of the car. I think it's more of a bragging thing to get the lowest price possible on a deal. One guy paid $38,300 for an 05' MDX Touring/Nav/RES including destination. I paid $38,200 without destination. So he got a better deal, but I'm still happy with the deal I got. And it really didn't take much. Just time and patience. You might have to sit there and watch the sales rep go through his act and routine. But just stay firm and walk out if they don't give it to you. Try another dealership. Somebody will want your money |

Im a little new to this car-buying-using-the-internet thing, so I apologize if what Im asking is too basic, but....
I want to buy a 2005 Acura MDX with touring, nav & dvd. I would also like to get the wood grain paneling and a cargo cover, and perhaps the cargo liner. Maybe wheel locks too.
The invoice price on the Touring/Nav/DVD is 39,610. From the Acura website, the accessories are: Liner 195, cover 142, mahogany knob 79, wood steering wheel 499, wood trim 139, and wheel locks 49. Destination 570. Total accessories: 1103.
I would like to get the car + dest as low as possible, esp. with the $1500 dealer incentive.
What is the best way to negotiate this? Negotiate best price for the car + dest , say 38500 (or whatever I can get) and then negotiate the accessories separately? Or negotiate the best overall price with what I want (say 39500) including all accessories (but not tax). Is it reasonable to include tax & get an "out the door price", or does that really not make a difference in overall price. Also, the one dealership I have gone to so far has a 245 processing fee, which I have no intention of paying.
Also, I am in N. Va, and would like to know which dealers have been receptive to deals. Ive heard about Pohanka, but Im closest to Radley. I would be willing to go up to Gaithersburg or Laurel if needed. I am almost ready to email all the dealers for quotes - should I make them an offer (either for total or for car & accessories separately) or tell them what I want and see what they offer, and then begin the negotiation? Should I mention I know about the $1500 dealer incentive?
Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks. |

*Warning to everyone...I'm long winded...sorry...this post in long*
In my opinion, I think it complicates things when you negotiate the car with options. Anytime you negotiate anything, it can work for you or against you to get someone to throw stuff in. It really depends on what you want thrown in.
If you want to do an entire package, break everything down first so you know before you go into the dealer what you want and for how much. In the end, you are looking for a target price regardless of how you go in to negotiate.
Personally, I went in to buy just the car. I intend on getting accessories later. And if I do buy accessories, usually, I'll check to see how difficult they are to install myself. The dealer will charge you for EVERYTHING. Like the cargo cover. That has to be the easiest thing to install, but the dealer will still charge you for the labor. All 30 seconds of it.
Just a side note, I'm a believer in that you shouldn't worry about getting the absolute best deal on the car because the dealer has to make money. You should aim to get a "great" deal, but I think when people try to milk the dealer for everything, they hurt the economy. People have to make money just like you and me.
Assuming the car didn't have the $1500 incentive, I've heard the dealer makes roughly $1000 if he sells the car at invoice. With the incentive, he's making $2500 under invoice. That gives you a lot of room to play with. I think people were getting the car at or slightly below invoice before the dealer incentive.
I was happy with $1400 off invoice even though I saw people on this forum getting the car for even less. I don't think I've ever purchased a car for $1400 UNDER invoice before now. So give or take a few hundred dollars doesn't really bother me. In MD, I paid $38,200 + 570 for destination for just the car. (05 Touring/Nav/DVD)
One more thing about the accessories, try to get them to throw them in at cost. Check online different places that sell acura accessories and find out how much they cost. Then just add that price onto the target price of your car. I think that's fair. I'm sure people on this forum would disagree because they'd rather get it for free.
Finally, when going in to negotiate a car, be firm. Don't make up stories or fall into the traps the sales rep will lay out for you. Make up your mind before you walk in. Have a friend come with you to keep you level headed. Try to avoid listening to any excuses the sales rep will throw at you. It really is a song and dance before you walk away with the car at the right price.
I know this post is getting long, but I'll share with you my buying experience. The MDX was actually not the practical choice for me. My wife really wanted it, but I felt we would be just as happy with the Honda Pilot. I wouldn't mind owning an MDX, but I couldn't justify the price difference. One day my friend called me to tell me he bought an MDX for $1400 under invoice. I was in shock. So my wife and I decided we would try to get the same deal. If they gave it to us, we'd buy it right there. If they didn't, we'd wait till the 06 Pilot and MDX came out. We walked in there on our 2 year wedding anniversary. We had plans that night to go out to dinner to celebrate, but we wanted to see if we could get this deal. I straight up told the sales rep that I'm going to be a hard sale because we weren't in the market to buy an MDX but the deal was so sweet, we had to try. He went through his song and dance but we didn't fall for it. Finally, I was like, we gotta go (which was true by the way). I told him I would be back when the 06 came out. But they wanted to sell the car, so he came back and gave it to us at the price we asked. That simple.
If the dealer won't budge, get up and go to another dealership. Someone will want your business and your money. |

Forget about the wheel locks. They're not worth $49. If somebody wants to steal your wheels, they will have the tools to take 'em. If you really want a set, PM me and I'll sell you an extra set. You can buy the accessories for much less and install them yourself. Of all the ones you mentioned, only the steering wheel is tough to install, but members here have done that.
Negotiation is a personal issue and depends a lot on timing, existing dealer inventory, ongoing incentives, and whatnot. You can negotiate an out-the-door price including tax if you want to. Just keep in mind the dealer has to make money too.
Here's an interesting link on a unique approach to car buying. Fighting Chance
I tried the Consumer Reports route but all that gave is some tips that you can get anywhere, and specs on the car you select. Not worth it in Acura's case, as they don't give out incentives much, and you can find out all you want about prices on this forum and on edmunds and kbb.
Good luck! Let us know how it turns out. |

I bought a 2005 touring with Nav for $37,200 from Radley Acura. I called a couple of other dealers and they wouldn't even match it... So I felt at the time it was a pretty good deal. This was about 3 weeks ago and I did use the financing. .9% for 36 months. Free money and too good to pass up. Good luck.
I find it best to do this all over the phone. Once you get in front of them they do the 'I got to talk to my manager routine' and you never are dealing with the decision maker anyway. These car guys are really just secretarys and the Managers make all the deals. I called the manager directly on the phone at Radley - Brandon Stanhope and dealt with him even though he kept trying to pawn me off on his 'secretary's'. Good luck.
Jeff. |

FWIW...avoid Pohanka's sales department at all costs. Unorganized, unhelpful, and a bit cocky since they think themselves the largest dealership, they don't have to work hard for the sale. I went in there ready to buy my '05 and they screwed it up (too long a story to recite). Went to Radley that night and got exactly what I wanted - very happy. :)
Service department there is fine, though...(Radley's too far from me to always go there).
YMMV... |

| The best way to negotiate is to contact all the Acura dealers near you and make them compete against each other. Start with the invoice + shipping - dealer holdback (2%) - floor plan fee (1%) = what dealer paid approximately. Worked for me. You don't even have to set foot in their showroom. You can fax, email or, as a last resort, call. Go to Tim's website and get prices for the accessories you want (no shipping for ground). Don't forget the $1,500 either (very important). Dealers are dealing because the 2006s will be here soon and they need to get rid of their 2005s. Hope this helps! Happy haggling! |

| I can't give you specifics because we'll be taking our car there for service. I told them I wouldn't tell anyone that they gave me a great deal. But I'll tell you this...it's in Marland and it doesn't matter which sales rep you go to because they all answered to the managers on the floor anyway. As long as the rebate is still in affect, you should have a problem. |

kshipe,
I don't think you should have a problem. I had a friend who went to 2 dealerships and they were willing to give him a good deal. If you look through the threads, you will see a few others in the area getting good deals too. There's always one dealership willing to sell you a car. Let me know if you need help figuring out the price.
Also, watch out for the internet sales guys because the guy I was
working with lied to me. I originally walked into the dealership to test drive the car months before I purchased it. When I was getting ready to buy it, I called the internet sales guy to find out what they were offering through the internet. He decided to try and make the sale but I told him how much we wanted the car for and he told me he couldn't do it. I went into the dealership the next day to talk to the sales guy that helped us months ago when we test drove. He was able to work out the deal. When I was sitting in financing, the internet sales rep from the same dealership called me on my cell phone not knowing I was already inside the dealership. He gave me a bunch of lies about how they won't be making money if they sold me the car at that price....yada yada yada. I told him. "Thanks anyway, but I already purchased the car." he asked, "From where?" I told him..."from your dealership...I'm sitting in Financing right now. Thanks anyway."
Shady. Just stick to your guns...you'll do just fine. |
