Maintenance Interval Reminder - Click HERE for Original Thread

Sorry for the noob question. I can't seem to get an answer out of the dealers.

I have had an 04' TSX (repurchased due to stupidity...left radiator cap off), 05' TL (totaled - terrible) and just recently purchased an 05' RL. We are looking to get rid of our 2002 RX300 and get into the MDX.

My question is, does the MDX have a MID similar to the TL and RL to tell you what service needs to be completed, and when? Or do you simply go for an oil change every 3000 miles?

In the brochure it lists, "Maintenance Interval Reminder" but nobody can tell me what that is.

There is an idiot light that starts coming on at a predetermined interval and stays on longer until it stays on all the time. I think it is set to stay on at 7500 miles.

I just change the oil as I feel it needs it and when the light comes on just reset it.

Oh. Ok thanks. Is it 'safe' to go 5000 miles without an oil change? Or, if I purchase the car, should I be doing it every 3750 as the dealer reccomends?

Oil change interval can be a hot topic, as people on all sides are pretty dug in. You can search and find a number of hot discussions of it.

I use synthetic oil and go with an extended change interval of 5 to 7k depending on factors like highway miles versus city, etc.

The Acura recommends 7500 in regular service so a part of me says that they have a fudge factor built into that also.

If you have any interest doing it yourself, it is not too hard. I change the oil myself and like the control and savings that provides.

The Maintenance Required Indicator light will start blinking at 6000 miles (+ - 100 miles) for ten seconds when the ignition is turned on. At 7500 miles (+ - 100 miles) the light will remain illuminated when the ignition is on. You reset the light for another 6000/7500 mile cycle by depressing the 'select' and 'reset' trip odometer buttons while turning on the ignition switch (continue holding for 10 seconds to reset light).
The MDX MRI is simply a resettable counter. Other car brands (Lexus, BMW, Ford, etc.) actually calculate when to turn the light on by monitoring various conditions of car usage (speed, driving conditions, temps, etc.). The 'on condition' MRI might be a worthwhile improvement if Acura wishes stay competitive in this luxury segment.

Thanks for the info. As far as being competitive in the lux segment - I assume since the MDX doesn't have it yet, with the next major redesign (07 I believe..?) it will have the MID like the TL and RL which tell you what service you need and when. It calculates based on driving habits and conditions.

Ahh. Thanks for the info. Currently with the RX300 we change the oil every 5k miles as reccomended by lexus. With the Acura I will probably have them throw in the deal lifetime oil changes (free oil changes - so long I keep up with the other regular maint.) I just wanted to be sure we wouldn't have to bring in the car every 3,750 miels. Every 5k miles makes it easier as we drive 20-25k miles a year on the car.
