| I have recently purchased a tow pkg for my 01 MDX (hitch and coolers installed by dealer). Is it OK to press VTM4 button to lock the rear wheels while I am towing? I know that the manual states only to use the button if you are stuck and not to use it on dry pavement, but I don't want to put too much stress on the tranny. I have talked to local Acura and Honda dealers and they have said yes and no. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I'm not sure I understand the question but:
It really is just an "unstuck" button. The idea is that you lock up the rear wheels for better traction when you are stuck in a snow bank or need a little help pulling a boat up a launch. In normal driving they need to be able to spin at different rates which is why you have a differential. So if you're talking about just pushing it when you tow, no, you don't want to do it and the system will discourage you from doing so. |

The fact some dealers said 'yes' is somewhat scary. |

It was probably the service manager. He was looking forward to replacing your entire drive train.
I could see using the VTM on a boat ramp if its a little slippery, but otherwise, it is completely unnecessary. The one time I tried to use VTM when stuck in the snow, it didn't help. It was very useful to have a heavy duty tow strap in the trunk though. |

And half the ones who said NO, probably still did not know, but figured it was a safer response.
Makes me wonder how many unsuspecting owners got stuck somewhere for a variety of reasons, because a service mgr. was too embarassed to admit he did know something.
Real Estate agents and brokers can get huge fines for not disclosing things about a house. But car dealers can you send you merrily on your way in a deathtrap and play dumb or defer to the manufacturer. Something wrong with this picture. |

| You can not use the VTM 4 to tow your boat. The system will automatically disenage at 18 mph. That's what my 2005 X owner manual states. It's good at the boat ramp for that extra traction when the ramp is slippery. |
