Looking forward to hockey again.

Who will get Sidney Crosby?

Changes to the rules too, allowing a 2 line pass, should be good.

I've always been an avid hockey fan, but I'm not sure I'll go back to following the game like I used to.

This labor agreement dispute has put a very bad taste in my mouth. It proved to me how out of touch the game is with what the fans really want to see. Neither the NHL nor the Players Association have a clue.

I've already cancelled my season tickets. I may attend some games as a guest of others, but I've vowed not to spend a single penny on hockey next season (I may watch some games on TV, but since they lost their TV contract that will be more difficult).

The kicker for me were the comments Roenick made. The NHL should have suspended him for life instead of trying to spin his remarks.

What's Hockey?
hockeyplayer
Hockey is one of the most entertaining sports around. The biggest problem is exposure. It can be a complex game to comprehend to a "rookie" fan. It is fast, exciting, and action packed. To those who say they once were a hockey fan and now have "soured" after the lockout and may not return, "WTF!!" There have been lockouts in most major sports. Granted they did not last as long as the NHL. No one can argue that something had to be done with regards to the league and its expendatures. Even myself, A HUGE fan of the game, am not knieve to believe that it will ever be a huge sporting market in the US and a ceiling limit on spending was the only way to save the game "south of the Canadian border." To those who have never been to an NHL game and are a die hard sports fan I ask that you try to attend a game. I know you will be surprised.

True, true. The NHL really suffers on TV compared to other sports. Most NHL games are quite entertaining in person when you know what to look for. I just don't see the NHL ever being on the same level in the public as some other sports but for those of us that pay attention, it is plenty fun. I am excited to have my Wings back.

Baloney, I'm sorry, there is no way I'm taking my kids to a game where the "entertainment" includes a fist fight or three.
cycler15
They better reduce the prices for all seats and cut beer prices in half to get the fans to come back.
anjan
I've been to a hockey game and I was bored to death! The only entertaining part is when a fight breaks out. If they really want more viewers, they should rip out the ice and put in big screens. Show movies and the attendance will go up :D

I'm sure its an entertaining game but its like expecting curling to become a big time sport with a lot of money.

OK, but will you also avoid baseball (beanings and brawls), basetball (less brawls but certainly some dirty/rough play) and football (not many fistfights but more violence/injuries than the others)? I wouldn't advise letting your kids near the TV either.

I take my 4 year old son to 8-10 college hockey games per year and he loves it (especially watching the pep band!). If you are near Boston, check out a college hockey game at BU or BC. College hockey is well played, fun to watch and less violent/physical than the pros. Fights are not common at all. I am sorry but I can't really accept this as a valid reason for never going especially if you have the ability to see college hockey. Having no interest in the sport is a much better reason.

Even in the pros, the days of the 3 fights per game are over (especially in the playoffs). Certainly there are more fights in the minors.

You can see that fighting will virtually disappear.

Changes to instigator rule

- A player who instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game will receive a game misconduct and an automatic one-game suspension. The length of suspension would double for each additional incident.

- In addition, the player's coach will be fined $10,000 US, a fine that would double for each such incident.

Areas of emphasis for officials

- Zero tolerance on interference, hooking and holding/obstruction.

Unsportsmanlike conduct

- The league will review and assess fines to players who dive, embellish a fall or a reaction, or who feign injury in an attempt to draw penalties.

- The first such incident will result in a warning letter; the second will result in a $1,000 fine; the third will result in a $2,000 fine; and the fourth incident will result in a one-game suspension.

- Public complaints or derogatory comments toward the game also will result in fines.

Interesting signings.

Interesting how some high-priced players are now signing with lower ranked teams.

I guess they still want a job.

Less than one month to go.

How about suspending Todd Bertuzzi for life ? This league is a joke. The play is lame and rules changes are because they know it's lame. I went to a Div. 3 school and the hockey was (and still is) way more interesting. I'll light my hair on fire sooner than I'll watch NHL again.

Wow Byebye.......The Leafs destroyed my Thrashers last night. I was at the game. I can't figure out why we are not scoring? At least these issues are coming up at the beginning of the season.
ByeByeChrysler
hockeyplayer, 9 - 1, I didn't see the game, but when I heard the score, I knew I would be hearing from you.

With an average of 40% more scoring, I'm sure some of Wayne's recorded will be broken, sooner rather than later.

I agree that we had one f$%#'ed up situation in net right now. I understand the goals against but the goals for is what is puzzling. The team looks horrible ever since Kovalchuk returned. I am not the biggest fan of him now that they have alot of scoring depth. I admit he carried the Thrashers alot of games last year but he does not need to do that this year. It seems the players have it in their minds that he will and he can't. My problem with him is that he thinks that every pass he receives in the offensive zone is meant for him to "one-time" it. I watched the goalies and they actually anticipate the shot when the puck gets slid to him. That is the ideal situation for them when the only have to worry about a shot and not a quick pass. Anyways, the Leafs and the Canadiens looked very good. Just glad the NHL is back.

I'm surprised Hossa isn't doing what he should be.

One heck of a game last night on HNIC. My team lost, but they're hot out of the gate. Can't say I really missed the game last season but, now that it's back, I realize how great it is, especially with the new rules.

How has attandance been so far? It seems like hockey isn't getting the coverage it used to here. Even in our so called "hockey state", the media doesn't hardly mention the Wild as compared to the other sports teams in town. They do have a very solid core fan support, but outside of that, people don't seem to care.

I wonder how it's going in the "non-hockey" markets, like the southern state teams?

Don't know about the southern states, but in the north, all games seem to be sold out.

Yes indeed..We were watching the game at a local sports bar when it happened. Sounds like he is alright but they are unsure if he will make it back to the ice. BTW...ByeBye....you think the Leafs would be able to let the Thrashers slide in a "W" one of these games?? Man do they have their number.
Pierre
Looks like my team also took care of your Thrashers the other night. We beat you at home, we beat you on the road, it doesn't seem to matter. I guess we're just that good.

Shades of '93 -- hot goalie, 4 lines working well -- heck, we can even afford to have Kovalev out for 6 weeks!

Yeah they did take care of them. We just need a goalie. They all keep gettin' hurt.

See you in the playoffs.......

Boston walked all over the Leafs last night, I'm sure the Thrashers will do the same one day.

BTW, Overall, looks like some strong Canadian teams this year, still to early to tell who will survive come April/May.

NHL posts best-ever November Attendance

NEW YORK (December 1, 2005) -- The National Hockey League posted the best November attendance in its 88-year history, attracting 3,346,812 fans to 199 total games and setting an attendance record for the second consecutive month. The November average of 16,818 per game was 91.2% of capacity and two percent above the previous November high of 16,490, set in 2001.

Twenty-four of the 30 NHL clubs are even with or ahead of their 2003-04 performance. The top gainers are the Pittsburgh Penguins (+35%), Carolina Hurricanes (+26%), Calgary Flames (+24%), Tampa Bay Lightning (+24%), Boston Bruins (+18%), Florida Panthers (+16%), Nashville Predators (+16%) and San Jose Sharks (+13%).

'bout time, too! But, we're getting Kovalev and Saku back from sick bay soon, so things are looking up.

I get to take the 'X on a bit of a jaunt tomorrow night: our company has a suite at the Rexall Centre in Edmonton, and the Habs are there tomorrow night, so guess who'll be wearing his Habs jersey (along with most of the crowd there)?!

It's about 600 km return Calgary to Edmonton, but the roads are fine (no snow here) and the 'X can use the workout!

What took you so long?!?

We're in deep do-do. Can't believe a team so hot can turn so cold in a few short weeks.

Wow the Montreal Canadiens are really HOT.

Bring back the Stanley Cup, ..... thanks to Bob Gainey.

Maybe they should try out some of the Bills players on the Sabres. They surely can't play hockey worse than they can play football :jester:

Couldn't have put it any better. They had their fate in their own hands. They were actually up on the Caps but Goaltending let them down. I truely believe they will make a key trade or trades for goaltending and defenseman and cruise into the playoffs next year. good luck to Montreal but I feel they are out of their league this year in the playoffs. Look for Ottawa to hoist it this year.
davemiamiacura
Yea , I wont count out ottawa , i think they are going to make it to the last game.
I do however have equal faith for my Buffalo boys to make it . they are showing serious promise and coming off of back to back shutouts and 10 goals the last 2 games of regular season will have their eyes on the prize.

its gonna be a good run. I wish all of you and your teams good luck .
