Where to tap into for power? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have the TVandNav unit and an aftermarket DVD player that needs to be installed into a 2004 NAV (no RES).
I've identified the 4 wires i need to cut into for the nav unit, but have no idea where to get power from. I was thinking that I'd be able to tap power into the same 20pin connection into the Nav display, but i haven't been able to find a correct pin diagram.

Which wires would be best used for Accessory power (keyed on), Constant on, and ground?

I've already cut into the 4 wires and added 4 pin connectors so I can easily plug in the unit once i find power for it and the DVD player.

Soupy,

I have a 2004 NAV (no RES) and I just installed an omnifi hard drive music system in the SUV. I didn’t have a wiring manual and mdxx3 was kind enough to give me the need information and I taped into the radio’s 20 pin plug, (not the NAV's) for constant on power, keyed power, and dash lights. The dash light’s wire is not an on-off signal line but does vary up to about 7-volts for dimming purposes. The ground was taken from a chassis ground screw that provided a common to other wires located just below the radio. I have pictures of the install but am waiting to finish off the mounting bracket this week before posting… I hope. One thing I have not investigated is what the radio’s plug circuit can support in current but it works fine for the omni controller and hard drive.

Thanks jrtiger!

This is exactly what I was trying to look for.

From the Stereo, I'll try using:

- Pin A2 (WHT/RED) for the switched on (key in ignition)
- Pin A10 (WHT/BLU for '04) for 12V constant.
- Pin A20 (BLK) is ground.

I'm at a lost trying to tap into the Constant 12V power.

I've got the tvandnav converter working drawing switched power from the Nav display.
But, for the DVD player, I've tapped into the Stereo for power and ground using:

- Pin A2 (WHT/RED) for the switched on (key in ignition)
- Pin A10 (WHT/BLU for '04) for 12V constant.
- Pin A20 (BLK) is ground.

I've spliced into the stereo wires using those clamp down splitters. Using a multimeter, i can see current on the switched A2, (Wht/Red), but I barely see anything from A10 and the DVD player doesn't power on.

Is there another place i can Tap into for Constant 12V power without having to pull out the center console again?

Hi soupy,

Sorry to hear about your problem. I did the same thing and used good quality 3M splice connectors to tap into the radio wires. A common problem with these splice connectors is that one or both of the wires are not completely taped through the v-cut pin of the connector. You really have to clamp them down. I also checked the connection for power before closing the dash up. Sorry but I do not have the manual so I can not recommend another wire. You might try pulling the 20 pin plug from under the dash via the not-an-ash-tray method, outlined here on the site and checking the tap. Here are two pictures showing my slices and I checked the plug at A10 before making any connections and you can see that it does offer the 12V continuous voltage.

Best of luck.
