I'm trying to set up a wireless router (linksys wrt54gc) at my place of work so i can access the internet from my laptop. However i tried to initially set it up through a cable that is already feeding the internet through a work router i assume. My question is will this set up work? router to router. Or can i try to initally set up my wireless router at home and then connect it to a port and hope it recognizes the internet??
sorry if the above paragraph didnt make much sense. i'll be checking often if there are questions. Thanks :D |

| Ok yes what you wrote is confusing. Is the plan to use the laptop at home or work? IS the router going to stay at work? Do you use DHCP for your IP addresses? If you don't know the answer or the question for that matter you need to talk to your office computer/network support person. Depending on the size of your company there may be rules as far as adding a wireless device to your network |

I guess what i'm trying to do is this:
internet--->work modem--->work router---> my wireless router---> my laptop
is this possible? |

| yes like I said as long as you follow your work policies and you are running dhcp you need to use the cable that came with the router probably to connect to you companies network. You also need to be running DHCP it should work just the way you describe. BUT without proper security so will everone else within 100+' of your router be able to get onto your companies network |

when i tried to initially set up my wireless router, i connected the cable that ran to a work computer and stuck it into my wireless router. it did not recognize the internet. however when i connect the same cable into my laptop the internet is there. why is that?
by the way thanks for the advice komondor |

| If your wired router has an uplink port on the back, plug the wireless router into that to piggyback the 'net connection. As Komodor already said, make sure you turn encryption on for the wireless router. Any chance your work connection is a VPN and not simply broadband? Pretty lax security and trusting company if there is no broadband. Should you get infected with a Trojan, you could be passing your company network data through your broadband connection and out to someplace like Russia or China. |

there are 2 types of computer cables those that go from a device to a computer and those that go from one device to another or one computer to another. when you connect like devices you need a crossover cable. That is what the cable that came with the router is that is made to connect to your cable modem. You need to use that cable or another cross over cable to even have a chance of having it work.
BUT like I said and you have not replied if your company does not allow it setting up a rougue wireless network is a great way to as we say create a "Resume generating event" |
