Curious Code Problem (2002) - Click HERE for Original Thread

Well, from searching the various radio code posts, it seems I have become the victim of both a dealer that feels it needs to steal 90 bucks from someone who bought a 40K+ plus car from them (by neglecting to mention I can simply hit buttons 1, 6 and the power button to get my serial number, and further by saying that they can't get the code even with the VIN, which they should be able to use to get the codes) AND of the problem mentioned here:

Which is that the code (I eventually found my card) isn't taken by the radio. Now, This might be for two reasons; either the radio is broken, or I have the wrong card.

Can anyone tell me if the card they have says HONDA or ACURA on it? This is for 2002 MDXs.

Thanks!

Holding down 1 and 6 while powering on the radio to get the unit's seriel number is a fairly new thing. Sadly, some service advisors don't know this, and charge customers as if the radio is being removed.

With the serial number, and proof that you in fact are the owner of the car, a dealer should be able to look up the unlock code for you. If the codethey give you that shows up on the anti theft code inquiry doesn't work, then yup, your radio is a goner.

SuperTech,

Thanks for the response!

It seems that I do indeed have the wrong card, since the serial number my radio flashed had nothing to do with the one I had on the card. I suspect the card I have was for my CRV radio which is now long gone (the radio, not the CRV) so I can't look at it to make sure.

Either way, I will drive into the dealer and ask again now that I have the radio serial number. I can understand that a tech might not know about the 1-6 trick (although it makes me crazy that he wouldn't), but the dealer I called (Esserman Acura) is the place where I bought the car, and if it's true that with the last 6 digits of the VIN, the original dealer can get the code, then THAT right there is B/S and enough to make me never buy another car from them again.

Tomorrow in daylight I will remove the glove compartment and see if at least the salesperson or dealer prep guy put the sticker somewhere on it.

Even if you bought it there, they might not have the code. The dealer that did the PDI on the vehicle should have the radio and navi codes on file. All cars that come through the service department that have a repair order written are databased by VIN. And a PDI is a repair order just like an oil change. Most dealers will write the codes on that repair order and possibly make a notation under in the computer database too. But only the dealer where the car was originally shipped to will have this. It's not a national database. Just one each dealer has. If a car was delivered to one dealer, then traded to another...the second dealer may not get to write the codes down or put them on file since it doesn't involve doing a full PDI again if a car gets traded.

Good to know.

Thanks for the great info!
