Question about the low pressure warning - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a question about the low tire pressure monitering system, if I have to replace the tires, do they have to put the old valves back in?

Hopefully I won't have to replace the tire very soon, but just a thought.

If you wish to maintain TPMS then yes, you would need to keep the old valves/monitoring units. But whomever you have remove the old tires should take caution when removing the tires or you may end up having to buy new ones. There are several threads that discuss this. Just use the old SEARCH box above.:)

EDITED - I know I shouldn't post when tired, thanks for catching that highcountrymdx

Actually, the TPMS transmitter module is mounted on the inside of the wheel, attached to the valve stem. It is not affected when tires are replaced. Just make sure the person who removes the tire is careful when removing/mounting the tire. The module can be damaged in the process.

The module is not attached to the tire, just the wheel. The valves are not replaced when the tires are replaced.

Most tire places recommend replacing valve stems when you replace tires. I know I have always done this on all the cars I have owned. I think that's what the original poster was referring to.

The valve stem and the TPMS module are a unit. Do not replace. Battery in TPMS sending module should be good for about 10 years (famous last words).

Not for TPMS valve stems. Just leave them in place. If you feel that you just have to replace something...the valve stem core (the schrader valve) can be replaced.

Good to know. Also, is there any danger to the valve stems of running the tires at very low pressure (say 10psi) for short distances while driving on the beach, for instance?

I doubt there's any danger to the stems. But there's a potential to damage the sensor. With so little air pressure, the tire's ability to deflect from an impact is compromised. Say...running over a rock. Instead, the tire might just conform over that rock. If it "gives" that much...there's a chance that it could be collapsed enough to smash the sensor if the object was shaped the right way.
