MDX: Can it be serviced at Honda Dealership? - Click HERE for Original Thread

To all:

Thinking about new or 06 MDX. Like many people, nearest Acura dealership is in a different state and 45+ minutes each way.

Don't mind going once or twice in the summer to test drive and buy car, but not for service.

Honda dealership is 3 miles away. Can the MDX be serviced there?

AND, past researched posts have shown me that a new MDX (or any new car for that matter) can be serviced at a local garage. Is this really true? I have a local guy i've used for years on my 2001 passat that does great work.

Thanks for any input.

Yes, I have checked with a Honda dealer. The same service for about 2/3 the cost.

can a new MDX have regular warranty work done at the honda dealership...like things that would normally be included in a 3 year/36,000 free maintance program for say...

thanks again!

Service - yes
Warranty work - No (Unless you pay and then submit the receipts to Acura for reimbursement)

Welcome to my situation!! As others have stated, service work can be done at any Honda dealer and it will usually be cheaper for the same exact parts. The only difference is they don't usually have as nice of waiting areas, and you definitely won't get a loaner car while your vehicle is serviced.

As for warranty work, it *must* be done at an Acura dealer, since American Honda treats Honda and Acura as two separate companies, at least financially. I don't know where in Western MA you are, but I bought my MDX from Schaller Acura in Manchester CT and I'm happy with both their sales and service. I bought my '02 TL-S from Acura of Avon in Canton, CT and their service department is excellent. Plus they have a huge fleet of loaner cars so you can almost always get one.

Service and be done anywhere. Warranty is the most important. That is the main reason it is difficult to buy from a dealer more than a few miles from your location.

pianoman41,

When I researched this before buying my '05, I learned, and I think I called Acura or thought I heard it definitively, that a local Honda dealership *CAN* do Acura warranty work as long as a) they agree to do the work (they apparently can decline to do it within terms of their Honda agreement, ie Acura does not require them to do it), and b) you pay them and then file w/ Acura for reimbursement. Acura won't reimburse them for WARRANTY work so the car owner has to pay for the work and then file w/Acura for reimbursement.

I have not in-warranty requirements yet(except for the temp control recall which I did go to an Acura dealer for) to test the system, but I don''t plan to drive 120 miles to my Acura dearler anytime soon.

I believe it is entirely possible and proper, just a bit cumbersome, for a Honda dealer to perform in-warranty Acura repairs.

Others heard differently ?

Is 45 Minutes driving that big a deal?

criminy, with paying and submitting receipts and all that BS....just drive over, get a loaner, drive home. (or go shopping- or to the movies)

It takes me 15 minutes to get to the gas station...

It is if it has to go back twice a month for warranty issues like ours did..........drive there, drive home, drive back the next day or two, then drive home, repeat often...........

OK I am talking for personal experience so here is the skinny. As others have stated, a Honda dealership CAN do warranty work if it OK'd first through Acura Client Care. And by the way the owner not the Honda dealer has to make the call to get authorized. If it is OK'd the owner must pay for the repairs himself and then submit the receipt to Acura either by fax or mail for reimbursement. It took about 10 days for me to receive my check. It was a real pain but the closest Acura dealership is 400 miles away from me. Hope that helps..

Yes, now imagine YOUR situation if on top of all the service visits, YOU were paying the bill each time, first getting Acura authorizations for each vist, awaiting the reimbursements, etc, etc- then, when Acura would finally balk and say "A real Acura shop would have fixed this- the Honda dealer did it wrong" and finally then dealing with Honda.

I'd say that if you cannot take it to the dealer due to distance, buy a different car- or deal with it. I'd not RELY on Honda as a 'first choice'...
