Called a Tire Kingdom and they'll do it for $89 with a 12 month warranty.

Acura provides no warranty.

Should I just go to the Tire Kingdom?

I would. Besides they will probably do a better job.

I could have sworn my dealer wanted $70. I can't find any coupons at the moment.

I wouldn't think a 12 month warranty would be a big deal in FL unless you plan on banging some curbs. In pothole states it's a good idea to go every year.

Go to Acura, regardless of the cost difference. They know the car, and if you need parts for some reason, they won't use some cheap imitations. I once took my Honda to a Midas shop for new brake pads with a lifetime warranty and a lower price. After less than a year I had the Honda dealer replace them because they were so bad. So my lifetime warranty lasted less than a year. Some bargain!

Unless there is a major issue, there should be no parts associated with an alighment. It's pretty basic stuff. I'd recommend Tire Kingdom. they also have a $65 service with a six month guarantee.

If you think you have a major issue that might be covered under warranty, that would be a different case and I would recommend the Dealer instead.

Just my $.02.

Why are you doing an alignment? Is your car pulling? Do you have uneven tread wear?

I do not believe in "preventive alignment". If your car is fine, the alignment may not be done correctly.

If it ainn't broke don't fix it.

If you do need it, I would not use Acura. No parts should be necessary.

My dealer just charged $79 today.

Ended up using Acura - just wasn't worth a 17 year old at Tire Kingdom doing it. Also, my time was more valuable since my MDX was already in for the 45k service. Thanks for all responses.

I think Firestone offers a lifetime alignment on a vehicle for $120. You can get it aligned as many times as you want as long as you own it. Alignment doesn't really require vehicle specific knowledge--most dedicated tire shops know how to do it correctly. In fact, they may be able to do it better since it's what they do day in and day out--they do it far more often than a dealership does.

The MDX only has provisions for the front and rear toe to be adjusted. There really isn't much too it. The NSX however, allows for much more adjustment...and gives very little room to be off in the specs. That particular car I'd take only to the dealer since just about any dealer has probably aligned more than the typical tire shop.

I am not really sure if I'd ever do a "preventive" alignment...but just about every vehicle I work on probably needs one if it didn't just get one. Most Hondas don't need much to get things out of whack. All it takes is a good rub against a curb. Or a really hard bump. After that...I bet something is not within spec anymore. And of course, a steering wheel that's off or visible, abnormal tire wear is a pretty good sign that an alignment is due also.

I just had both front and rear alignment done because I thought it was necessary after replacing all four tires at 48K. Paid $90 at the dealer. Only one wheel was out of spec but I felt better knowing it was done. I have bumped a few curbs and go off-road occasionally.

:4: Completely agree.

I usually have it checked at the time tires are being replaced or serviced, or if uneven tire wear or pulling is noticed. Otherwise, there's absolutely no need to do it.

No need to go to the dealer for this. A reputable tire shop will do a better job for less $.

Had 4-wheel alignment checked and done not too long ago (3 wheels were out of spec), when 4 new tires were installed on the MDX. Cost me $79 at Wheel Works, a reputable tire shop in the bay area.

I agree. If there soes not appear to be a need (pulling, uneven tire wear, etc) then there is no need to do it. However, if you were already set on doing it and you were at the dealer anyway, I would have told Acura they could do it if they matched the Tire Kingdom price. They likely would have.

I would have asked them to CHECK it first, and do it only if it was out of spec.

As proof that it was really necessary, I would have asked for a printout that showed the alignment settings compared to the recommended specs, as well as the settings after the alignment was completed.

This information was provided to me by the tire shop where I had the alignment done, without me having to ask for it.

I totally agree with this post.

Does Acura give a warranty that they align the vehicle within specs--where they provide a printout per mgmdx's comment.
When I had a Nissan, the dealership outsourced the alignment to the local alignnment shop which did this work all the time. A printout was provided also, which showed the before and after alignment specs.

I have had a Lincoln Mark VIII, where I have never had it aligned (11 years old w/ 117,000 miles). Since the tires wear evenly, I see no reason to ever get a "preventative alignment".
