Extended Warranty on Acura-Certified MDX? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi,

I just bought an Acura-Certified 03 MDX w/ Navi and RES. It has 44k miles on it and was placed into service in April 2003.

I'm wondering whether it makes sense to buy the Acura 7yr/100k extended warranty that increases the bumper-to-bumper coverage to match the 7yr/100k warranty on the powertrain.

The dealer says that such a warranty would normally cost $1,900 ; however, since the vehicle is Certified, Acura discounts the price to $940.

Any thoughts on this, and is the quoted price a fair one ? I've had good luck with Acura in the past (I just sold my 97 Acura RL w/180k miles - no problems!), but I'm thinking that with the extra options (Nav, RES), it may be worth it to purchase the warranty.

Thanks!
Steve

hey, steve,

i bought a certified 02 touring/nav in march with 43K on it, and i did get the 100k warranty. i think they discounted it for me as well, but i don't know if it was as low as $900. i would definitely take it.

i don't expect problems with an acura (i'm coming off two consecutive hondas--same thing there), but i think of it like insurance. there's always a chance that something could go wrong. plus, there are some additional perqs...roadside assistance, lockout service, concerge service (i don't even know what that is, but i know my local dealership will shuttle me to and from the airport and wash my car while i'm gone), etc. not to mention that it's transferable...added value for resale.

think of it this way. over the next 56k miles/4 years, do you think you'll spend less than $900 on what would otherwise be warranty repairs? that's only $225/year. for instance, the a/c vent fan on the passenger side of my X is making some noise, like it's rubbing where it shouldn't. it sounds like an airplane propeller when the a/c is on high. if i was out of warranty, with my luck, it'd probably be a $300 repair (i'm going to have them check it at my next service).

there's something to be said for peace of mind...just my two cents.

If you're the type to keep your car for 7+ yrs or over 100k miles, for only $940 you have to go for it. However, if you're more prone to trade in or upgrade every 3 yrs to get the newest or latest gadgets, you're better off passing. Since your '03 has Navi & RES, I'd get the extended warranty - one blown pixel in your Navi or RES screen will more than pay for the warranty . . .

Agreed. Did the same on my RL, since I plan to keep it that long and don't want any surprises. 940 seems like a bargain.

That sounds like a great deal. I paid $1400 for my 7/100 warranty at time of new purchase. I was told I got a very good deal at that price.

However....doesn't an Acura Certified vehicle by definition come with some type of extended warranty? Somehow I was thinking that this was part of what added value to a buying a Used MDX under this program. I may be off here, but someone on this board will know for sure.

An Acura Certified vehicle will usually carry a 12-month extended warranty on top of the existing warranty. They will use the original invoice date as the point of reference.

I just looked on Acuras web site:
http://www.acura.com/preowned/preowned_index.asp

In brief, the following areas are already covered by virtue of it being an Acura Certified Vehile

- 12 month/12,000 mile limited warranty
- 7 year/100,000 mile powertrain coverage Z(0) deductible

Acura offers additional warranty coverage (this is probably what they are offering you) which includes:
- a 7 year/100,000 powertrain warranty which 'compliments' the warranty already proved
- Roadside assistance
- Conciere Service
-Personalized Travel Planning

So the 'REAL VALUE' is potentially to understand how their 7yr/100k powertrain warranty REALLY compliments the warranty already provided.

I just re-read the initial post....I may have confused the issue with my earlier post.

Basically if the $900 covers everything bumper to bumper (not just powertrain), I'd go for it.

Thank you very much to everyone for your feedback and input on this -- based on your advice, I decided today to go for it and purchase the extended warranty for $940 !

I now have bumper-to-bumper coverage (not just powertrain) through Acura for 7 yrs/100k miles (plus the roadside assistance, concierge service, etc). This gives me peace of mind in case something like the RES or Navi breaks!

Thanks again,
Steve

p.s. This website is awesome, and you guys are the best ! (I only wish I had found it earlier when I was doing the research for buying a used X!)... based on posts here, I changed my mind from buying an 02 to buying an 03 (for the additional hp, better transmission reliability, etc, etc...)
