Speaker sizes? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi guys,
Im looking to upgrade the speakers and Ive read several of the threads on speaker upgrades. It seems pretty simple. Anyway, I think Im just going to go with some quality 3-ways in the doors and maybe a tweeter upgrade. The sub will come a bit later.

My question is are all 4 door speakers 5 1/4? What size are the window tweeters?

Ive always been a fan of Pioneer and I see the TS-A1370R in 5 1/4. Any thoughts on these? What about tweeter suggestions (are they even needing an upgrade)?

Thanks!

Do 6 1/2's fit as well or do modifications need to be made?

All four doors are actually the 6.5" type, and not the 5.25" type but this will also fit with the right mod/spacer. Also note this 6.5" speaker should be the 3-hole Honda/Acura type and not the oversized 4-hole type for other vehicles. But then again the oversized type will fit too but you'll have to modify the door/trim area (cut/trim stuff - not recommended). Either way there will be something you'll have to trim... just a little with the standard 6.5" speaker or more with the oversized 6.5" speaker.

The window tweeter size is... never mind - just pick a small/thin tweeter because either way it will be a custom/modified mount method involving some cutting of the plastic trim and then followed by silicone/glue (luckily the mess will be hidden behind the cloth grill).

No comments on the Pioneer or any other speaker. This kind of stuff (speaker selection) is actually personal - you'll have to listen to all of them at the local stores (bring along 3 favorite CDs)... and decide which one you like most.

So you are saying that I need to be looking for 3 hole Honda/Acura 6.5" speakers for a clean, stock fit?

Just want clarification to make the install as easy as possible and get the right stuff.

Thanks for the great info!

Yes, you should find the 3-hole type. Having said that, some 6.5" speakers come with 6 or 7 mounting holes... they put both the 3-hole and 4-hole footprints in the same speaker to kind of make it universal... (ok to use this type too)

160mm speaker, not 170mm. Both are often refered to as 6 1/2".
As far as the tweeter, MB Quart tweets fit in easily with little to no mod. They have a screw hole in the back which wil allow them to be mounted in the same way and in the same location as the stock tweeter.

Now you had to go and confuse me with the 160mm/170mm thing. Is this separate from the 3 hole and 4 hole issue?

So now I need 3 hole, 160mm, 6.5" speakers?

Some speakers in the 160mm and 170mm will have multiple mounting holes. Some will have many more than 3 holes. My Quart 160mm drivers have about 11 holes, so you can't always count holes, but the factory speakers use a 3 hole mounting system, so a driver with the multi-hole setup will usually have holes that line up. Some speaker companies will have the size in the speaker model #, i.e. JL Audio TR650 and TR600. These designate a true 61/2 or 170mm (650) and 6" or 160mm (600).

Thanks for the help!

I picked up some 4-way Pioneers for the front and 3-way Pioneers for the back. It is definitely more clear and I can feel the "potential" just waiting to be unleashed. That's sad when the speakers overpower the sub!

So next up will be a headunit, then a sub and a new changer. Can't wait to see what it sounds like with a real headunit pushing those speakers!

What model Pioneers did you install? Did you had to do any modifications?
devil421
I got TS-A1681s for the front and TS-A1671s for the back (from Best Buy). As far as mods, only minor stuff. The front doors I had to cut off the speaker mounting tabs (little plastic things that stick out of the door...you will know them when you see them...they prevent aftermarket speakers from sitting flush if you don't cut them off. A steak knife did the trick). The dish isnt *quite* deep enough but when you screw them in they fit fine. The Pioneers are 4 hole speakers but since the mounting location is plastic, I simply screwed the stock screws into the plastic and used one of the stock holes and created the other holes. They hold just fine.

The rears required taking the mounting baskets (white plastic things the stock speakers were sitting in) and cutting off the mounting tabs so that the speakers are flush with the basket. After that, just put the speakers into the baskets and the whole assembly back into the door (only fit one way) and screw them back in with the stock screws.

Overall it took about an hour to do all of them. I could have done it in half the time if I wasn't winging it (and making the expected "duh" mistakes on occasion that waste time).

This is an 02 btw so YMMV.

The Pioneer speakers you installed are 4 ohm and from the previous posts the MDX speakers are 2 ohm. Will there be any issues?

I havent noticed anything other than the headunit just not pushing out enough power to take advantage of the speakers. Aside from that, it sounds very sharp. Just needs more power and a nice sub to back them up :).
Besides, Im also thinking more long term since the headunit will be replaced shortly. Don't want to have to buy new speakers again.
