As the title states..

Only criteria is the car needs to be a 4 door sedan somewhat nice.

What do you all think of the 1st generation Acura 3.2TL?

LOW Blue book for a 1996 TL is almost $9,000. If I had $6,000 to spend on a car, it would most likely be a Toyota Camry. Many 1997-1998 Camrys in that price range can be found.

I have seen them local for around 5-6k. KBB means nothing sometimes. Camry might be doable too.

Isn't the 1st gen the one with tranny issues?

Nope. The tranny problems are mostly 2nd gens with the 5 speed tranny (and especially the Type S models).

there is a local guy selling a 3rd gen TL (99) for $7,500. I don't think it is a scam. So what the hell is wrong with it?

Always run the car through one of the shops that can run a quick diagnostic for around $50. That'll tell you if something is awry with the vehicle. Especially look for emissions content, engine block cracks, and piston compression (for each piston).

True... I will be doing a once over for sure. Compression test is a must if I buy a used car.

8 of the top 25 vehicles stolen in 2004 were Integras. Something to consider.

.....I would VERY VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND sticking with a well maintained TOYOTA....at that stage in a car's life, RELIABILITY and DURABILITY becomes, pretty much, the most important factor, and no one does this as good as Toyota, period!!!

$5000 - $6000 on a dependable 4 door...

mid to late 90s Maxima SE - Good horsepower, fairly stylish
mid to late 90s Accord V6 - Fair horsepower - not as stylish
mid to late 90s Integra GSR - Great horsepower if you wind it out - hard to find as a 4 door -
mid to late 90s Toyota Camary - Not so much horsepower - very unstylish
mid to late 90s TL - Good horsepower and stylingbut RWD I beleve.

I just got rid of my 01 CL ($15,400) - never had a problem with it that I didn't cause (ball joints from lowering it) and I put 60,000 miles on it. Very nice cars - tiptronic is nice when you're feelin "frisky" - but nothing like my S2000's gearbox. :D :D :D
