If you run 87 octane and the timing retards it self, does it advance itself if you go back to 93 octane?

Your ignition is electronic and governed by an onboard management system that constantly monitors your engine including pre-detonation ("pinging" or "knocking").

It adjust automatically depending on conditions that exist in your engine including the octane of the gasoline you are using.

So simply, with lower octane the ignition automatically retards itself and with higher octane it will advance the spark.
