Last year I changed the stock speakers in my Honda Accord to Infinity Reference, and to a Alpine headunit. And honestly now I can't stand the MDX's stereo. I keep switching it off!
I need to do something about this and I'd like to do it one step at a time. What is the one thing that I should change first to get the biggest improvement ? or what is the one thing that contributes most to the sub-standard sound quality. Is it the speakers ? or is it the headunit ? or both ?

I would suggest changing speakers, then amping those speakers, then changing the head unit. But speakers are your most bang for the buck to start with.

Thanks. That was my belief too.

Is the headunit really underpowered or are the speakers so insensitive ?

The 01 sub is a full range speaker.

I'm not sure about the Pilot although I know in the 03s, people said the Pilot had a better sounding stereo than the Bose in the MDX.

It may have been just a slight bit better version of awful.

Thats the problem.

Based on comments from a speaker designer(enthusiast, not commercial) whose words I can trust, changed speakers in his Pilot. It seems there is more scope for improvement in the subwoofer than the individual speakers. In his experience there didn't seem to be much improvement by just changing the speakers.

Personally I wouldn't run a 10" woofer above 300hz.

Since there is no seperate sub control on the headunit I fear its crossed over from the main speakers with no high-pass crossover on the sub whatsoever.

How is the sub wired ? Connected seperately to the headunit(subwoofer output) or tapped from the front (or rear) door speakers ? And mixed from both channels ?

just for clarification...what I meant by the above post is that there is not much to gain IF you change ONLY the speakers and keep the headunit. It would definitely make sense to change the headunit AND the speakers.
