Do you ever actually use the voice feature? It frustrates me. I'll say "Find the nearest Acura dealer" to make sure it works on the PDI, and it'll do something else. I'm predicting that most of you tried it out for a week or two for the sheer novelty of it, then went back to good ol' button pushing.
Our MDX
Should the command be "display the nearest Acura dealer"?
I am not sure.
I usually use "What time is it?" and it works fine all the time.

It seems to recognize "find" as something valid. When the command doesactually take, it'll say "now finding" and then whatever I told it to find. Gas station, Acura dealer, or whatever. "What time is it" is one that it rarely screws up for me though. Although, I don't know why I'd ever really need to ask since it's already displayed on the radio.

I wish the letter recognition was better. I made myself a cheat cheat from the owners manual so that I say the words (like "apple" for a), and then it works much better, but it's a hassle. Otherwise it keeps asking "did you say A?", and half of the time it gets the wrong letter, no matter how carefully I pronounce them.

I use the "What time is it?" feature but more so for my daughter to laugh at. I do however have the NAVI voice instruct me with directions when a desitination is chosen. Not sure if this is a bug or not but the time function only works when the map is displayed - not the menu.

But you're right Supertech - the novelty has worn off.

With the exception of the handsfree dialing w/bluetooth (which is great), I find all the voice recognition features useless. There is no feature that isn't easier just to do the old fashion way w/my fingers.
Pierre
Same here. I find it easier to stab the screen than fuss with the voice commands.
socalJD
I find it easier to say 'Trip computer' than to have to go thru 3 screens.

Also, it's easier to say 'CD play disk (1-6)' than to have punch the CD button and then the corresponding disk # button.

Some functions are just plain faster, safer & easier . . .

I mostly use the "go home" voice command, not because I don't know where home is, but to find out how far away it is and how much time it will take.

My "go home" address is a corner about a block away, not my actual home address. There are two reasons for this: I don't want any other person who might be driving my car to know where I live (paranoia complex), and the road to my house is not yet mapped (primary reason).

My '03 requires a 4-digit PIN to be entered to use the "Go Home " function. Doesn't yours?

I know on the '05s you don't have to have a PIN. It's an option but you don't need it, and your "Home" address is stored by itself in a different location.

I use it quite a bit for setting addresses on the fly, especially on the highway. It does a pretty good job if you speak deliberately and there's no one else talking. Make sure you ennunciate letters at the end of words so it doesn't get confused.

That being said, if the car is parked I'd much rather use the touch screen--much faster and easier to use.

I only use it for laughs when the kids are in the car, because it never understands what I'm saying!

my son always gets a kick out of the voice command response.

But seriously, i do get fustrated saying the command over and over again on the Navi, w/c makes punching the buttons faster and easier.
But the bluetooth is quite different, much more useful than the navi. I use it more often rather than punching keys on the phone.

Hmm, the posts don't follow the results of the poll so far. Perhaps I should have made a third choice to see if you use the voice for only a couple of commands?

Add the word "regularly" at the end of your question and they poll would reflect usage better.

We use voice commands for Bluetooth, but rarely use it for the navigation.

I use it all the time. Without it, you're almost confined to 6 presets in XM. WIth it, you can bounce between "XM channel 75" and "XM channel 6" or "XM Channel scan".
I use it for climate control and Navi almost exclusively.

I wish there was a voice command to get to the XM display screen that comes on if you press the tunng button for about 8 seconds.

Is there a voice command to get the radio to *stop* scanning, either on XM or FM? I can get it to scan, but I can't seem to find a command to get it to stay on a channel once I find something I like.

Yes, a PIN is required, but only if you enter one during setup. I left mine blank, thus eliminating the requirement. So if you want to do the same, go back to your setup and change the PIN from '* * * *' to '_ _ _ _ '. The same procedure also works for personal addresses.

Why does anyone need a PIN to hide an address? There are too many PIN's in this world already! The only exception might be if you use your exact home address.

What's the point of hiding your home address since anybody can obtain it based on your license plates (licensing is usually public info). I suppose hiding it on the Navi will keep lazy burglars from showing up at your house.

Bug. Sometimes it will stop scanning by repeating "XM Channel Scan", but I usually just let it go to the next channel and say "XM Channel down".

That'll work. Looks like they forgot to add the command. :twak:

You are correct that just about anyone can get it from the license plates, but by the nature of their profession, burglars are lazy. If they weren't lazy, they might actually work for a living. My main point, however, was that I really don't see the need to have a password for everything that we have in a list.

I've gotten improved results by: 1.) sitting back from the mic, 2.) switching the voice option from "female" to "male"

Not only have I expericenced greater success, the male voice options details more info. For instance, it would pronounce the name of the street/location that you've entered.

BTW I have the 2005 model... just my $.02 worth. Hope it yields better result for y'all.

The male/female choice is purely cosmetic--there is no better recognition by having one over the other since they are just sound files that are called up for each command. The files are stored independant of the input method used (touchscreen/joystick/voice), so I imagine you may have just had (a) better placement of your mouth relative to the mic, (b) a clearer, louder voice, (c) less background noise, or most likely (d) a combination of the above. As for the male voice having more detailed info, that setting is also independant of the sex chosen. Look under "Voice Guidance" in the Setup menu and you will see three choices: Minimum, Normal, and Maximum. When Maximum is selected, you will get the pronunciation of the streets during the direction portion of voice guidance, albeit in a synthesized voice rather than the male/female voice you've chosen. Select 'Normal' and you'll see it will probably go back to how it was when you had the female voice selected.

it seems though sometimes that it recognizes my voice vs my wife's voice.

I use the voice commands regularly. I find that they work very well as long as no one else is talking. I use the commands for the CD player, XM radio stations, turning the AC on and off, changing the AC vents from Vent to Floor and back, browsing my Address book, and finding restaurants. Occasionally, it does screw up but I have found that I get better than 90% accuracy if I'm speaking clearly and the car is quiet.

It seems to work just great. I use it for controlling other features also like the audio system, RES, Climate Control and such.

Sometimes its frustrating when I don't exactly what to say - for example I was trying to get it to turn on the Air Recirculate and it kept switching to the AM band on the radio :3: Then I looked at the manual and its supposed to be - "Climate Control Fresh Air Off". Works like a charm now. So, if I know what the command is, its works really nicely.

Shootist,

Try this command to display the XM Channels.

"Display Audio Screen"

...and if you're in XM at the time, you'll be able to go straight to the screen descriptions...very cool...

And for some odd reason, the system does recognize my voice better than my wife...

The command "Audio Screen" or Display Audio Screen was part of the update disc in the 2005. I also got direct access to Trip Computer and Information screens and a few other voice commands.
On the downside, the update disc for the 2005 has two color bugs: if you set the Window color to Black or Red, it displays fine at first. But as soon as you restart the vehicle, the exterior temperature display and manual A/C control buttons go blank. I've disputed the charge on my credit card because of this.
mgrattan
So, if I own a 2005 MDX, the voice commands that you mentioned (Audio Screen, etc.) should work? Or are you saying that there is an update that I need to buy? If I need an update, where do I get it and how much does it cost?

Thanks!
shootist
You probalby have the 4.13C disc. The upgrade is 4.31C. It's about $200 after shipping. There's a thread with the link to the site to buy the update, but I don't have it.

I don't get the PIN either...

So someone steals your car, so they decide.. Hey, hey this is a cool car, maybe we should risk showing up at his house becasue they might have more cool stuff... :(

Just doesn't make sense...

Chances are you have some mail, registration, insurance forms, etc. in the car anyway
antnecc
no I do not like it
she comes on always at the wrong time
like a good song, or something on the news
or a goal was just scored
MikeDonnaK
antnecc,
You can minimize her voice commands by going into the setup screen and selecting the minimal option in the navigation voice command mode.
antnecc
thanks for that tip Mike, I would like to be able to cut her short if I don't want to hear what she has to say, cause I know already.
I also noticed I answered the poll the wrong way, I do use the voice recongnision it works pretty well for me.

I use the following all the time:
- What time is it - perfect for when you don't want to take your eyes off the road (that clock is not exactly easy to see).

- I use these four to bounce between the most used displays; Information Screen (so I can view temp.); Trip Computer; Audio Screen; Map. These keep me from having to take my eyes from the road and push buttons, are easy to remember, and provide all the "basic" information I need.

- The audio controls I use are primarily - CD Play Disc X, track X; Radio BandX, Preset X. From there it's easy to use the steering wheel buttons.

The climate controls I rarely use (because most voice commands are too long). And, unlike most reviews of the manual controls, I find the climate controls (above the nav screen) SO easy to use; I use the up/down arrows to set temp, and I only adjust the A/C on or off. 99% of the time the system settings are just fine.

Overall, for a car with all this technology, the interface to it all is superior to any other alternative I've seen. I have an Infiniti G35 6-sp and it's a nightmare to access the basic features - heck, even the volume knob is on the incorrect side of the radio (right, versus at easy reach on the left).
