My 2002 MDX has been causing a whistling noise right after it feels like it goes into 2nd gear and only when acclerating, stop acclerating sounds goes away. I can hear it very well in parking garages but hit or miss while driving open road.

I had the recall notice taken care of last year. Never had a problem or noticed it until about 2w ago. Took a tech for a drive Tuesday and he noticed too(whew!)

I took it in Thursday and they said they fixed it by replacing the alternator belt, tensioner and an oil jet kit. Unfortunaly I heard the sound again. I have no idea what this could be and I feel the tech is stumped.

Anyone have the same problem? I am 2m from warranty end and about to add hitch and coolers to pull snowmobiles this winter. I am thinking an extended warranty is becoming a "really good" idea about now...

Does the pitch of the noise get higher with speed? Is it loud only in a specific gear?

The sound is constant, doesn't change with speed, if i lift up on the acclerator and coast it stops.

Another question...can you change the noise by making a right or left turn? if yes, then it could be a wheel bearing. If it's no, then I'm pretty sure we can rule out things that are dependant on wheel speed.

Let's try this. Stop the vehicle and shift it to "2" so it will try to start out in 2nd gear. Depress the brake firmly and slowly start giving it throttle. Keep going till the RPMs will not go up anymore. Can you hear the noise? If yes, then it's the pump inside your transmission going out. If no, then it should be taken to a shop and lifted in the air and run in gear so the noise can be pinpointed.

Thanks SuperTech.

I tried both your recommedations. The side to side the noise didn't change. On the transmission starting in 2, didn't hear the noise.

Took it to the dealer today and they say it is normal compared to other 2002's and that it isn't the transmission but rather the engine air intake making the noise. They were able to repro this on several other 2002's on the lot. I am going to ask to drive one of these 2002's myself when I return the loaner tonight.

I am stumped... Its a slight whistle sound starting at 12mph.

Oh and to add to that, the new ext warranty is VERY pricy 48m/48k for $1880 with $100 deductible. I think I may just take my chances if the tranny goes and hope for the best.
