Hello all....My '01 X is roughly 2k short of 80k mi. The ride has gotten quite rough. I can feel everything on the road with even the slightest dip and bumps, ...this will actually be the first time that i will have to replace my front struts since purchasing it second hand with 36k mi on it. Warranty is out because of mileage not like it'll cover this issue anyways.. looking at the picture i found at www.oemacuraparts.com
http://www.trademotion.com/partloca...t=9&catalogid=2
what other necessary items related to the front suspension should i pick up in addition to the struts?
Thanks, Steve |

| Just bought it to my mechanic....and he told me i need new strut mounts & struts and will put an order in for me. Now when you say spring seats, are referring to the mounts? cause if not i'm gonna tell him to order those too. Thanks, Steve |

While your at you should replace the stablizer bushings
Part number 51306-S3V-A00 $4.93/ea. These will stiffen the ride and reduce the noise. I did this @ 75K |

You may find parts that are better and prices that are cheaper if you look at other than OEM parts. There are several very good manufacturers that make struts and shocks that are considerable better than OEM and no more cost. Shop around.
I usually look at OEM equipment to be fair to middlin but not in the best category.

Ok fellas, finally had the chance to get my car to my mechanic since my '01 is out of warranty with 78k mi .... I must've spent half a day & a trip to Paragon Acura parts department to get everything done. I replaced both front struts, strut mounts & rear shocks with all OEM which my mechanic got 3 days prior to my visit today.
So after install, I went for a test drive with my mechanic to see if the noise going over dips and bumps was resolved.
Ride was a GREATLY improved, but unfortunately thud noise was still there. My mechanic suggested ( and New MDXer's as well) it may be a bushing problem but he wont be able to get them until Monday since the garage was really busy. So w tried re-torquing the lower control arm bolts, test drove it...noise was still there, although slightly less noticeable.
Thats when i said fuk it, and drove to the closest dealership, determined to remedy my suspension problem and brought the the Acura spring silencer tubes as per procedure 2 on the THUD tsb. While i was there, I also picked up new front stabilizer/sway bar bushings ...drove back to the garage, had to wait an hr for an available lift and got those installed.
Took a final test drive and VOILA!! FIXED!!! Ride quality is smooth with NO NOISE watsoever! too bad it cost me freaking $730 all said and done ... Steve |

Ah the things we do to keep our X....It's better, from an economical point of view, than ponying up for a new car. Glad it got fixed! |

Wow!! 730 dollars! You might want to buy some KY to help ease the pain!
You could have had all of that work done with high quality aftermarket parts for less than $500 and the struts would be better than OEM! |

What do you consider high quality aftermarket parts, echo?
Just wondering. Looks like we are limited to KYB G2 and Monroe SensaTrac. Not to say those are bad choices. I believe it was recommended to replace the spring seats also.
Another option would to obtain the parts from a Honda/Acura discounter and have them installed by an independent who may well be cheaper with labor.
Doing 'shocks' is quite routine esp. with only 2 struts involved.
Replacing the rear could certainly be DIY. The front too if you have the tools and experience. |

Monroe has ALWAYS treated me very well in several different applications and has saved em quite a bit of money as well. I would never buy OEM suspension parts from a dealer! Almost as bad a s buying OEM batteries. |

I went this route to get my front struts replaced...total cost with parts and labor was just under $350, as opposed to the Acura dealer's quote of over $900. |

mwdelta --
i have 91k on my MDX... i recently replaced my struts for the first time.
i went with KYB G2 struts and the MONROE REFLEX in the back. the ride and handling are great.
got the work done at the local midas.
highly recommend these parts |

RC, have you done anything else recently that improved your MDX? I know I am due for some service and was trying to decide what I should get done besides the recommended items.
This is OT but I've noticed my mileage is ...dismal. I'm getting like ~16.5 average with 80% highway miles. Someone reported that new plugs might help, so I probably will do that. |

I would like to stick with ride and handling like a new not modified vehicle. How do KYB G2 and Monroe Reflex ride and handle compared with original unworn parts? |

What type of noise are you referring to ? and the stabilizer/swaybar bushings did the trick for that noise ? |

quite honestly, it's been almost 5 years since my X was new...so i dont really remember the original ride.
all i know is that by putting these parts on, there was a marked improvement in ride/handling.
i also have relatively new michelen CT's on. |
