MDX Price OUT-THE-DOOR - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm in the process of pricing an '05 MDX touring with NAV. I'm confused over the prices others on the board and elsewhere are stating they received. Is the price BEFORE taxes and fees or is it the OUT-THE-DOOR price? I've been quoted in the lower $37k range from several dealers, but after they tack on the fees and taxes, the price ends up a few dollars shy of $40k :13: This is taking into account the current 1,500 incentive, dest and all that. Maybe I am just reading user posts wrong, but I was under the impression when they state "I bought my MDX for $37k" that that is the final price they paid including all taxes and applicable fees. Please offer some clarification from those who have better interpretive skills than I. Is what I've been quoted the norm and a "good" deal or am I getting the wool pulled over my eyes? Please advise :(

People generally post prices they paid for before taxes, tags, etc... unless specfically stated OTD price. You don't want to include the other fees as it's differs from State to State or even jurisdiction. If you are getting prices around $1500 below invoice for the 2005, you are in the right ball park. You just have to see what type of freebies the dealer is offering you or in some cases, the overpriced dealer add-ons that they are trying to tack on.

Here is some area where the dealer can make money.

1. The price of the vehicle.
2. Trade in
3. Dealer Prep fee
4. Add on accessories
5. Financing
6. Extended warranty.
7. In some case, the Document fee.

The sales tax, title, registration fee are fixed fee.

If you are prepared to negotiate and know the cost of each of the above items, you will probably save hundred/thousands on your purchase.

Thank you vlam for the information and response ;) This makes make feel at GREAT ease knowing that the quotes I'm receiving are in the right ballpark. I don't want to badger the internet sales departments to the point the reneg on the deal so I'll settle with this +/-$37k. I really was looking to negotiate the OTD price as $39k, but most of these dealers are responding with these "before taxes and such" prices... not what I asked. I live in Las Vegas, but buyin' in SoCal as the competition here in Vegas is non-existant to the ONE acura dealer we have. MSRP is still being had by them even with all that's going on in the world! non-navi units going for $40k+ as "managers special", L-O-FREAKIN'-L!!!

I just thought of a pertinent question to ask. As I am buying the vehicle in California, yet I reside in Nevada and will be licensing the vehicle here, is the dealer in the right to charge me a CA licensing fee of $338.75? I know that since I'm buying the car in CA, not NV, that I must pay the CA sales tax, but what about the registration? Is that due to the state of purchase AND the state of residence? If you can't tell, this is my first out of state purchase :D

Generally, you pay the sales tax when you register the car.

So if I buy a car in Florida, the dealer gives me temporary plates, and then I register the car in New York where I live and I pay the applicable New York State sales tax.

I do not pay any tax in Florida.

In some cases, if you pay in the state where you buy, you get a dollar for dollar credit, for the sales tax in the state where you register.

I know of no situation where there is a double sales tax.

Thank you for the info JeffK. Is there anyway to know if your scenario is applicable to my situation of buying in CA but registering in NV? Today I went to CarMax to have my Element appraised and had a chance to pick the brain of the representative there. He advised, just as you, that typically in a scenario such as mine that a temporary is issued and I am to register as soon as I return to my home state. What he did NOT mention, however, was what you said about the taxation occurring in the state of registration, not purchase. I would like to know if in fact I would not have to pay CA sales tax, but rather NV sales tax. Anyone else care to enlighten me or further affirm JeffK's claims? Thank you ALL again for the information. This forum ROCKS!!! :2: :29:

The only way to know for sure is to reseach Nevada's state policy on automobile sales taxation, typically by contacting the local DMV. May be on their website. Some states, like Florida, will tax you at your state's rate if you pick up the car in FL, but not if you have it shipped.

Go the local DMV in Nevada and ask them.

Hours of research and reading forum postings at various sites has educated me greatly. A ritual whereby the dealer ships the vehicle to the state border and relays it to ya is the only option for me in avoiding the CA sales tax. Those money hungry CA government (insert expletive here) have sure made it difficult to get by without paying their tax whereas other states make it easy. My last resort to avoid any of these extraneous fees is to see if by a stroke of luck my one and ONLY local Acura dealership will price-match the offer I have from SoCal. Most likely not and I will have to end up paying to have the vehicle shipped her to NV, but it's worth a shot as a last resort. If I wasn't so damned right-minded I'd con the dealer into signing the paperwork as "delivered out of state" so I could pick up the vehicle IN CA and drive it home to NV, but alas this leaves the dealership wide open to legal trouble. Thanks to all the replies thus far! Hope to be a REAL member of the MDX club here in a couple of days :D :D :D

Although you have researched the issue are you 100% positive?

If I go to a department store in CA and ship to New York, there is no CA sales tax, but of course a UPS charge. The CA store may collect the NY sales tax, but there is no double taxation.

When I got my prior Porsche in Florida, Florida collected the NY sales tax (most dealers are licensed to do this) and gave me temporary tags.

When I finally got the paper work, I went to NY DMV, registered the car and showed them the receipt from the Florida dealer where the tax had already been collected.

I did not pay the tax a second time.

I suggest you contact the CA dealer. If he truly wants to make the sale, similarly he should be able to collect the Nevada sales tax, give you a receipt and temporary plates (30 days) and when you register the car in Nevada there should be no tax to be paid, it having already been collected by the CA dealer.

Everyday, people buy cars in one state, register in a second state and only pay one sales tax.

Here in the Metropolitan New York area, people buy in NJ, Conn and NY and only pay the tax in the state where they are registering the car.

There is no double taxation.

I live in NC and just purchased an X in FL.

The NC DMV told me that if I purchased out of state that if the tax I paid in the other state would count toward the 3% NC tax. In other words if I paid 3% or more in FL I would owe nothing in NC. If I paid less than 3% then NC would charge me the difference between the lower number and 3%.

The FL dealer said they would collect the 3% and mail it to NC. They also mailed in the NC title application.

When I went to complete the title at the NC DMV I noticed that there was a check attached to the paperwork so I guess it was the 3% from the FL dealer. Anyway I paid nothing more.

I spoke with a rep at the NV DMV office and he advised me that I would NOT need to pay CA registration, BUT would have to pay CA sales tax as I'm opting to pick the vehicle up in that state. He advised also that many dealers in CA who are selling to an out of state buyer will often slap the CA reg on there anyway and pocket that amount, never sending it in to the state taxing authorities. Armed with that info, I have now requested a final quote on the 05 MDX Touring w/NAV OTD minus the $340 CA reg fee. Brings the price in my calculation down below $40k:)

Are you confusing two items:

CA registration fee

and

CA sales tax.

I still believe you may be asking the wrong question. The question to ask NA is:

If I buy a car out of state and register it in state do I pay NA sales tax? I suspect the answer to that question is yes.

Then the second question to ask NA is: If I have paid an out of state sales tax in CA, do I get a credit when I register my car in NA?

But the foremost question to ask is of the CA dealer: Why are you collecting CA tax, when I plan to register the car in NA? Why are you not giving me temporary (30 day tags).

If what you say is correct, a double taxation, CA dealers would not be selling one car out of state, which I believe is contrary to what is actually happening: They are selling cars out of state.

JeffK,

I apologize for the disorder of my questions and findings. Below is a summary:

Sales Tax is paid in CA and is credited when registered in NV. If the sales tax was lower in the state purchased than the state registered, the buyer must pay the difference to the state of registry. Since CA is almost 1% higher, this won't be a problem.

Vehicle does not need to be licensed in CA for an out of state buyer.

Vehicle is to be licensed in state of use/residence.

I hope this clarifies and helps anyone else in my situation.

I know CA sales tax in Los Angeles county is 8.25% and 7.75% in Orange & San Bernandino county. Based on a $37.5k purchase price, 1% is $375. If you can get the vegas dealer to within $400 of your So Cal quote, you're better off buying local . . . Food for thought.

socalJD,

The Vegas dealer is nothing short of a feminine hygiene product. They won't budge on the price and pretty much say "don't like our price? Find better, we don't' care, we've got a captive market" Not to mention, they don't even have the model/color I'm looking for :p I would almost go with a dealer in SoCal JUST to avoid that attitude. I have now put a deposit down with a dealership in SoCal and will be taking delivery of my new Sage Brush Pearl MDX Touring w/NAV this Saturday. Final price, OUT THE DOOR was under $41k including wheel locks, cargo tray, all-season floor mats and spoiler. Still waiting for the EXACT totals from the dealership. CAN'T WAIT!!! :D :D :D

Come on, tell us how you REALLY feel . . .
I think you just summed up about 95% of the dealers out there.

I would tend to agree with ya. I will have a final opinion once I return this weekend, but so far South Coast Acura in Costa Mesa, CA has been great. Seems they fall into the remaining 5% :29:
