Anyone here have a Kenmore Refrigerator with the PUR Water filter ? It's the blue filter that mounts in the lower front grill. I'm curious to know how long these filters typically last (ie 6 months, 1 year, etc) I know it varies by usage, but would like to hear what other's experiences are. Contemplating buying some replacement filters but don't want to get carried away . . . TIA

As you said, how long they last depends upon how much water you run through them. I would say we are very moderate of the usage of ours. My Kenmore, mod. # 59702992, is 4 or 5 years old. ( I would have to look it up to be sure.) It is a two door model with the filter in lower left. I remember buying a replacement filter sometime before the first year was up. Actually sitting here right now I could not say whether or not I have actually changed it. I guess I would have to go see if I can find it. I seem to remember that it was fairly expensive: somewhere in the $30 range.

I will not even think about changing it again until I see some reduction is water volume. The water volume was so slow to start with that it will be hard to tell when it reduces. It only puts out a pencil size stream.

Hmmm, you must have an older model.
Mine has an 'idiot' light that will come on when it's time to change the filter, don't have to monitor flow - at which time it may be too late (ie too much crud in the filter).
Replacement filters are $40 retail - I think I'll wait for the light . . .

My Kenmore Elite came with two supplemental insert regarding the water and air filter replacment. It states that for the water filter, it should be replace every 6-9 months. The replacement indicator will light up after 400 gallon of water being cycle through. For the air filter, it should also be replace every 6 months.

Filter changing requirements vary by usage, size of family, etc.. The light that comes on indicating a change is necessary has nothing to do with water usage, it is merely a time activated light, usually 6 months.

We change our filter once a year. When the red light comes on once (6 months) I merely reset it and wait for the next time it comes on to change it. I would not recommend waiting until the flow rate is reduced to change the filter, by that time it is way too late and the filter has long lost it's effectiveness.

The prices for those filters are outrageous. I suspect it's sort of like the ink cartridges for printers. The manufacturers probably make more profit selling filters in the long run than they do on the refrigerators. Prices on refrigerators are generally lower than they were 20 years ago in actually prices without even factoring in inflation.

That filter for the Kenmore with the filter in the bottom grill will be the same as the filters for the Whirlpool's with the filter in the bottom grill. At one time Whirlpool made most of the Kenmore refrigerators but not so now.

BEagle, excellent feedback. I think I will follow your routine. As soon as the light comes on, I'll verify it's been 6 months since placed in service and just reset it. I'll do the actual filter change annually, that's what I did with the ol' Maytag fridge (what a POS, will never buy a Maytag appliance again)
