that replacing the existing subwoofer in its enclosure with a new one and adding an amplifier for it will not produce quality sound for the cost????? from what ive read on these threads some folks have put a new sub in the existing enclosure in the back, which is my preferred method.... one guy from soundadvice and one from a local shop both pitched the box approach, which id rather avoid.... maybe it would sound better with a dedicated enclosure but is it that much of a difference???? i dont want to lose the space and privacy of a hidden system
im looking at adding a kenwood amp for a JL audio 10" sub 10W3D4(any suggestions?)..... ideally id like to keep everything hidden, and be able to restore the car to factory state at lease end... not sure if this is possible or not, so im looking for some "sound" advice :-) .... thanks in advance for any help....

The JL is a good choice if you really want to keep it in the stock location then do so, but you have to do several things to make sure that you get the best sound from this set up.
1. Use Dynamat or some comparable sound deadening application on all the sorrounding metal surfaces to reduce unwanted ressonance(vibration)this will help get a better lower end sound.
2. Make sure you try to seal that cavity where you will be mounting the 10' driver. You will get tighter bass if this is done correctly.
3. Make sure the gains on the amp is matched with the head unit. Matched correctly and you will get less distortion(muddy bass)
I don't know what type of bass you are looking for but for most people this will be fine but if you are an audiophile then this might not be enough. The box solution is an alternative that you might want to consider. Try the OEM approach first and if you're not happy then get a box made. |

thanks xtreme.... im not looking for shake the condos type of bass, just some extra oomph... im actually pretty satisifed with the base system except for the lack of noticeable bass.... i was planning on adding some dynamat behind it but the audio guys mentioned it wont help that much... would you mind briefly explaining points 2 and 3? the amp im looking at would crank out 230W for the sub which is 200W over the 30W existing sub amp... how do you match the gains?
also, if you take the OEM approach, how reversible is it? i was told that once you start playing with OEM speakers and subs its harder to restore to factory state... i just wanna keep my options open should I return the car at lease end... |
