I just purchase my black MDX .. and would like to know the thought about installing a HID on it .. any thoughts and comments on it? what is a good brand ...??

Welcome aboard! Literally dozens of threads on HIDs if you do a search. HIDplanet.com is a good resource should you want to learn about the basics.

Among the different brands, Xenondepot (once had a Group Buy) generally has good feedback, well save for one or two negatives; One of our members is selling a kit; Polarion (mine, bought from another member) is holding up. Just avoid the fly-by-nights, and remember to aim your lights well afterwards.

Good luck!

Installed a Polarion kit a few months ago, and I couldn't be more pleased! Tons of light, perfect beam coverage (my '04 has projectors). Install took about 2 hours (I was being very over cautious and deliberate). After install my aiming had not changed at all. Best accessory I've installed.

Good luck!

ps/

Polarion is out of Richardson TX.

Oh, yeah, you never did mention your model year. I upgraded my 01 headlight housing to the 04 with projectors and the beams are pretty tight.

I used the search function and read up some old post of HID but most of the posts were way back posted in 2003 I haven't run across with more current materials yet.Have a few questions before purchasing the HID kit for my X, is there any huge difference between the 05 mdx headlight housing and the 04 or 03? and you mention about " Just avoid the fly-by-nights." what does that suppose to mean?

I know I want to get the HID kit .. but I just wnat to make sure I get the best one that suit my X.

Thank you.

I completely understand your position; was in the same boat a few months ago. The 04 is when the new headlight housing with the projector started; nothing new in 05 and looks like the same for 06. The MDX projector housing is not really meant for HIDs but I'd say it's still better than nothing. Some members have modified the housing or retrofitted with other brands like Valeo, thereby needing special bulbs, like D2S. By avoiding fly-by-nights, I meant companies that maynot be in operation 2 years, let alone 2 months from now. Several ebay sellers would fall under this category. Polarion has been around for a while and looks like they'll be in business a few more years. Last thing you want is to install a $400 HID kit, and not have tech support and/or a warranty.

Thank you so much for your quick reply ... what are you thoughts between Xenondepot and Polarion? so is there a lot of modifying and retrofitting required inorder to put the HID kit in? i want to do a good job and make sure it is done correctly the FIRST TIME. so i am very careful in picking which brand and how... once again thank you.

I can only vouch for Polarion, as that's the set I have. Most have been pleased with the Xenondepot set as well. The packaging was very professional and the wires and ballasts were up to par. You can order the specific bulb for your model year: 9006 for lowbeams 2001-2003, and H11 for 2004-2005. Not much wire-cutting involved but you do have to install the ballasts properly. There have been numerous threads on the actual install.

You do realize that this could mean voiding your warranty?

voiding warranty!!!!!! hum ... that I have to think about ... but .. but ... HID is important for me... but so is the warranty ... what should I DO !!!!!

You also realize kits are illegal if used "on-road", right?

I would stick with a non-US company if possible (XenonDepot, HID-Online, etc). The DOT is clamping down on a lot of businesses selling kits and putting them out of business (or at least stopping them from selling HID kits). Good luck with your decision.

Has anyone heard anything about a HID kit brand HALO? if so is it good??

Dj, did you do a comparison on the halogens ('01) to the projectors ('04) to the HIDs ? From a seat-of-the-pants approach, I notice that the projectors throw out more light than the '01-02 halogens. That said, is it that more different when you installed the HIDs ? If the objective is to get more light on the road, aren't the projectors alone enough ? Now if you want the whiter light, you can always change the bulbs in the projectors w/out going the HID route. Just curious . . .

socal,

No, I did not do a full comparison; I jumped directly from stock 01 halogens to HIDs in projector housing, so the difference is, pardon the pun, light years. What I did notice (and my apologies to G. Colton and the other test tube techs out there) was a more focused beam, besides being brighter and whiter. Again, this is a seat-of-my-pants observation lacking candel measurements and lumens and all that, certainly not under controlled conditions.

socalJD,
The projectors do not throw out MORE light. They simply focus the light better instead of having the light reflect in places where you do not need it (like above your car!).

HID do put out MORE light than halogens. My opinion is HID Projector>Hid Reflector>Halogen projector>Halogen reflector. YMMV.

I don't know how they're gonna back up their warranty as the HIDs seem to ship from Tokyo...
