here is the audio upgrade I just had done today by my local audio shop.... i just added a JL Audio 10W0 sub powered by a Kenwood KAC 629S amp, bridged to run at 160W.... This system kicks some major a$$ and the bass makes my spine tingle... Next step is to upgrade the mids and highs up front, maybe with some bostons....

Location of amp:

Location of sub
Do you know if they ran a direct power line from the battery? If so, where/how did they feed the wire from the engine compartment?

I would also like to add an amplifier and this tends to be the trickiest part of the install.

TIA...
It would be logical to tie into the accessory outlet that is located on the
drivers' side rear side panel (visible in photo of sub, above). Pretty
good power available there.
What do you do if you want to use both rear seats?

C'mon, rem, they got laps, don't they? ;)
Crem,

Most amp installs recommend a direct connection to the battery with a heavy gauge wire. I don't think the power outlet can supply enough juice for the demands of a high power amp (probably a 15 amp fuse).

RTK
RTK,

I was figuring 12V x 15A = 180W, but you are probably right. The peak current
usage would exceed that and you would need one of those huge capacitors to get
away with using the stock wiring. (Which might be easier than running a cable
to the battery???) Knowing that I have not installed a car stereo since 1976
should explain that slip-up.

Suggestion... poke a hole and run the cable under the car to the battery. Fuse
it at the battery!!!

Addendum: fuse to rear accessory socket is 20A
Great setup! I can't wait to get my MDX and customize the audio. I am not sure what exactly i'll get, but looking at your pictures makes my mouth water... :)

Good job!

Did you make any mods to the front door tweeters. I have the base audio system and I find the sound to actually be painful. It is harsh, thin and boomy. Something about it causes my ears to stop up and ring regardless of listening source. Do you think that your mods would help this situation in the base model.
soesed, i havent upgraded the front tweeters or mids yet... thats next on the list.... an upgrade might help with your situation but also try playing with the bass and treble controls to see if that helps... my mod only helped me get some boomier bass which you sound like you dont want....
Acura thought that it might be the tweeters causing the "painful" sound. Rather than disconnecting them as an experiment, I shifted the sound to the rear speakers only. Much to my surprise, I think that the rear speakers are causing the boom and distortion. When I shifted the sound to front only, while something was missing in terms of a "full sound" it is more listenable. I'm now wondering if an appropriate eq/crossover might help to clean up the sound.

Do you have the specs, manufacturers and drawings for all of the (base) audio components?

i dont have the specs but i believe the stock speakers are alpinesm and the sub is too.... if you search , there are specs listed somewhere on this site.....

Does your kenwwod give good punch or is the bass dragged out like the Boss system? Second, if you don't mind me asking how much did the instalation of your amp alone cost?
GatorGreg
Hey jlive, did you have any problems integrating your sub and amp into the Bose system? Someone told me that the Bose system is all 1 ohms and that my 2 ohm 12" Xtant sub and amp would not be compatible (as well as my Boston Acoustics coaxials). I had that set up in my old CR-V and it sounded awesome so I'd really like to get it hooked up in my 'X. I will be taking it to Sound Advice this weekend to see what they recommend.

Gator - I have the Base model which is always easier to upgrade... Ive read the same issues you mentioned and I don't know any workarounds....

Manus - the kenwood gives some good punch for sure and much better than anything you'll find in either the Bose or base stereo... it probably isnt the best possible amp for the job but it definitely provides some serious kick without taking up a lot of space which was my major goal... the entire ugrade ran me 470 which is probably a little higher than necessary but I didnt do any price comparisons except visit soundadvice which was even higher.... i paid a little premium for the speaker and amp which is to be expected at a smaller radio shop.... if i knew how to do this on my own i coulda easily saved 150-200 on everything....
