We will be in San Diego the 4th week of November, and I'm looking for any inputs on a place to stay. I suspect many on here have stayed there before.

We have traditionally stayed in the bigger and nicer resorts, like Four Seasons on Maui, and the top of the Mandalay Bay in Vegas, as examples. However we are finding that we like smaller places better with less crowds and commotion, with walking access to parks or beach walks. That seems to work the best for my daughter too (who will be 6 when we go to San Diego). Plus it seems like a waste of money to stay in those higher $ places.

So I wonder if anyone has stayed at a place they would recommend in San Diego. We plan to visit the Zoo, Sea World, and any nature areas (parks, beach walks, etc).

Thanks

Where you are going, all the attractions are close to each other.

Might check out Best Western. There is an excellent one on El Cajon Blvd. in La Mesa. The location will save you money, and the freeway is 5 min. away.
You will be at all the 'hot spots' in another 15 min.
The rooms are great, and you can get a 2br with a kitchenette at a decent rate. Free breakfast (waffles, cereal, fruit, etc.)
It sounds far, but SD (my hometown) is one of the easiest places to get around.
Fireblade, or others living there now, may have better suggestions.
But we stayed there with in-laws over the summer, and did Balboa Park and Wild Animal Park in 2 days, no sweat. (You need a FULL day for the main zoo). All the attractions you plan to see are relatively close to each other.
You can stay at more reasonably priced motels (Motel 8, etc.) in Mission Valley, which will put you about 10 min. closer, but the places are not as nice.
Of course, places on the beach are much more expensive, but again, travel time is not a big concern there.

Since you are somewhat off season, you should do quite well.
Have a great time!

I'll be back in Dec. for my Dad's 93rd birthday!

Well this thread just got my attention. :D

My family will be going on a little road trip to San Diego the week after Thanksgiving. I've been to SD many times but have never stayed in Mission Bay and this is also my first time to go there with a baby. So this time we plan to stay in one of the hotels in Mission Bay. Does it make sense weather-wise to be staying in that area? I'm asking this because besides the regular Sea World/Zoo/etc. I want to take my 10 month old strolling the beach area if possible.

Might do some long-range forecasting. SD has one of the best climates around, but of course this time of year can be very unpredictable most anywhere. And rain is not uncommon.

Sea World has a lot of open attractions. Not sure if they stay open year 'round. The Zoo has more protection with small buses, etc.

We will take lots of pics, always do.

I ended up picking the Best Western Island Palms Hotel and Marina, mainly for location (that's where my wife wanted to be). It has the suites with kitchens so that will work out for us too. Lately we've been trying to get smaller places with multi-room suites and kitchens just for the convience and less-hassle factor as compared to the mega complex places.

I'm not worried about the weather, since it will almost certainly be a lot warmer in SD than it will be at home no matter what happens!

We're finding things to do, and plan to do the "breakfast with Shamu" thing at Sea World. Those 'meals with animal' events are a tradition, like the time I ate with an orangutan at the Singapore zoo. I even got to handle the baby orangutan! What a trip.

Oh, and I'm getting a Dodge Magnum, so look for a report on how these things are to drive. I won't get too crazy with the family in the car, but what fun would it be if I didn't freak them out just a little bit?

Lacostacal
I live in San Diego (La Costa, hence my handle) and will give you a few must see's.

Wild Animal Park
Zoo
Legoland if you have small kids
Walking around downtown La Jolla

The weather should be very nice. Have fun and let me know if you need any other suggestions.

My family and I just got back from a trip to San Diego[11/2-11/6], beautiful city with perfect weather.

We stayed at the Marriott Hotel & Marina next door to the Convention Center and within walking distance to restaurants and shops in the Gas Lamp District. We had a great view of bay and marina on the 21st floor. What I liked most about the room was that the windows actually opened about 2-3 inches and we had a nice breeze going through our room.

My son loved the pool, although it was a bit cool while we were there 65-70 so he didn't swim much. There is also a small shopping village within walking distance with a few good restaurants.

It's close to the expway so getting to the Zoo/Sea World is easy but I recommend a taxi ride to the zoo [$10+tip]. Definitley check DT La Jolla.
