Well, as a lot of you know, I've been given the charge of handling all of our AcuraCare extended warranty online sales :)
Since then, I've gained a pretty good understanding of how the warranties work, the pricing structure, etc. Rather than sound repetitive and go over info that you may or may not already know, I figured that we'd have this thread to answer any questions you might have, and if I don't know, I'll do the legwork to find out. I can post quotes in here also, but be sure you mention the year, model, and mileage of the vehicle.
If interested, I can also write up a primer on plan coverage, etc. |

Tim, you need to take off the dealer hat and put on your consumer hat for this one ;)
In the past (MY 01-04), the way the warranties were structured, it made more sense to wait until you had close to 48k miles before purchasing the ext warranty. It worked for me, since I traded my '02 in for a '05 and did not have to throw down the $2k for the extended warranty (ie 0 ded, 7yr/100k).
IYHO, does the new structure still allow for this, or do we have to purchase the ext warranty much sooner in order to get the same benefits as before (ie 0 ded, 7yr/100k) ??? |

Tim,
I have an 04 TL with ~32,000 miles on it. Is there a cost savings purchasing an extended warranty now vs. waiting about a year until it has closer to 50K miles? I know the overall prices could increase but is there some other incentive to not waiting for the factory warranty to expire?
EDIT: Just saw socalJD's question which is very similar to mine but I'll leave mine as an example. |

Mine was purchased 04/02 and just turn 13,000 miles last week. We must not drive too much in the Bay Area.;) |

To get the $0 ded, you have to purchase the warranty within 6,000 miles or newer than 2004. The neat thing, though, is that now, the warranty extends from the time you PURCHASE it, rather than from the vehicle's in-service date. Which, of course, depending on how you drive, leaves a lot of interesting mathematical computations as to what works best. |

Depends a lot on how high the mileage is. You can only purchase a warranty for a vehicle with under 50K on the clock. If you can give me an example, I can better elaborate as to the options available. |

Unfortunately there is no $0 ded plan available any longer for that vehicle. The closest I can come would be a plan to extend the warranty for another 48 months/48,000 miles (from today), at a cost of $1800.00 |

On your car, it honestly won't make any difference financially, as long as you do so within the period of the factory warranty. |

==============================================
My question: Does the warranty start the day one purchases the extended warranty or from the date that the vehicle becomes 4 years of age (i.e., 8 years since new in the above example)? |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
| The warranty begins on the date purchased. The extended warranty does offer added coverage (rental car, trip interruption, etc). |

Then it seems for those people that put high miles on vehicles would do better off to wait right up to the 50K mark before buying, yes? |
|
|

Tim-I have an 04 MDX Touring with NAV & RES. I have owned it for 16 months and it currently has 29,500 miles. Due to the electronics I am considering adding the AcuraCare extended warranty. Would I be better off purchasing it now, or waiting until close to 50K miles?
Thanks |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
I can answer both questions the same way, actually :)
If say you have a 2003 with 30K, the only advantage is the added coverages (rental, trip interruption, etc). For 2004 and 2005 vehicles, there are pricing advantages, as well you can buy a plan with longer coverage. For 2003 MY for example, the highest coverage plan you can buy is 48/48K. For the 2004, it's 60/84K, and the 2005 is 72/102K. And, of course, this will be a rolling thing (as in next year it will be 2004 that can only get 48/48K). |
|
|
| JimH |
What is the maximum months/miles for a 2002 MDX extended warranty that one can purchase prior to when the standard 4 year warranty runs out: is it 48/48K, 36/36K or ?? Also, what are the current prices?
My MDX is 3years-2 months old, and currently has 37 K miles.
I was figuring on getting an extended warranty prior to the 4 yr
cut-off dtae.
Thanks. |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
| The max would be 48/48K from the warranty purchase date, bringing the warranty to November of 2009, or 85,000 miles, at a cost of $1800. |
|
|
| JimH |
| Thanks for the quote Tim. I did not fully realize that both the months and mileage accumulate from the exact date of purchasing the extended warranty, but it is clear now how it works. I will probably purchase an extended warranty in 2006 when I get closer to the 4-year cut off date. I assume then the maximum time will be 36 months and 36 K miles (if one purchases in 2006 for a 2002 MDX model). |
|
|
| mdx4us2 |
| Yes, thank you Tim for clarifying this information. |
|
|
| pianoman41 |
Tim, is 102K the max mileage you can get for coverage?
My wife will put about 25K a year on our '05 MDX. That means I'll be out of the factory warranty in two years. I'd like to extend it to 100K miles so I'd realistically end up with a 4yr/100K mile warranty. What's the most economical approach and when would I get it? |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
| Actually the farthest you can extend warranty coverage (assuming your X has under 6000 miles) would be 8 years or 120,000 miles from the date the warranty was purchased. |
|
|

Nope. She's got just under 10K on there already. What's the next available option? |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
| The next best option would be a plan that covers 72 months/102K from plan purchase date and mileage under 15,000. That plan has a $100 deductible, and runs $2,010.00 |

IMHO, you're better off waiting until you get close to 30k miles and then get the 60mo/84k $100 ded plan at $1,900.
In my situation, I have to decide b/w getting the 0 ded 7yr/100k plan ($1660) now, or wait 3.5 yrs and get the 100 ded 4yr/48k plan ($1800) - very interesting how AHMC structured the Ext Warranty plans . . . |
|

Tim,
How is the deductible charged - per occurence or per visit ?
In other words, if I had to fix the Navi screen, the rear AC transistor & a broken sway bar link, is it $100 if all are addressed at once or $100 per item ??? |
|
|
| JimH |
| Tim: I see that you got all the prices on your web page for 1999 and newer vehicles w/ $ 100 deductible. Thanks for the updates, as it makes it easy to compare different scenarios. |

The deductible is limited down to $100 per visit, so if all 3 were diagnosed at once, it would be one $100 charge max. |

Tim,
Sorry to be a PITA, have another question.
If I elect to get a $100 deductible extended warranty now on my '05, is my factory warranty still in effect until I exceed 50k miles, at which point the extended warranty kicks in ? In other words, do I defer paying the deductible until the factory warranty runs out ? TIA. |

Don't be afraid to ask questions.......half the reason I started this thread is so that I could sharpen up on things like this :)
Correct. The only added coverage that the warranty offers while still in the factory 4/50K is the concierge emergency service, trip interruption benefits, and travel planning.
In fact, anyone who'd like a brochure can drop me an email at hondacuraworld@aol.com and I'll put one in the mail :) |

Tim, it might be more cost & time effective to have the brochure scanned into a PDF file and linked to your website in the maintenance section. US 1st class .37 can add up in a hurry . . . |

Hi Tim, thanks for all the info. Another question. On the warranty page is says " If your Honda is a 2001 or newer and has less than 42,000 miles, you can qualify for Honda Care Extended Warranty Coverage. The only factory backed extended warranty coverage available." I got confused since I have 96RL. Who would be honoring the ext. warr. if it was not AH.
Thanks.. |

Tim, if I'm not mistaken, the concierge emergency service, trip interruption and travel planning are already included in the factory warranty. I'd check the warranty myself but Acura just redesigned their web site and I can't get into it. What a joke--it doesn't work with Firefox and there are a lot of people using that browser. I also couldn't get into it with IE 6.0 either, and I'm not blocking anything. |

My Firefox v1.0.7 works fine with Acura's "new" website. Anyways, the website confirms that the 24-hour nationwide emergency and travel services, roadside assistance, Acura Concierge Service are part of the TLC. |

Hi, Tim, I got really confused after going to your site about the extended warrenty.
The 100 deductable is more than the 0 dedcutable?
900 vs 700?
My MDX is 05, with 2K on the meter. My factory warrenty expire 7/09. What kind of extanded warrenty Can I get?
Thanks. |

Those are the base prices for different levels. Go in and select the period you are interested in. The $0 deductible is typically $100 more. |

The advantages to buying the warranty early are:
1. If you have under 6K miles, you are eligible for the $0 warranty.
2. In addition to the features of the standard Acura warranty, Acura offers rental car reimbursements for up to $35 a day, trip interruption benefit of up to $100 per day for 3 days covering meals and lodging, if over 100 miles from home.
3. There may be price advantages as well to buying early, as opposed to buying later on in the life of the vehicle. |

There are in fact a couple instances where this does happen. Don't ask me why......but it shouldn't be for the plans for your MDX.
All of the plan info is on my website, but I'd be glad to craft up a personal quote for you if you wish. Just email me at hondacuraworld@aol.com with your info, and give me a general idea of how much mileage you drive per year, and how long you tend to keep a vehicle. |
|
|
| pianoman41 |
Tim you said that the contracts now start from the date of purchase, not the vehicle in-service date. Is this just for the year portion of it or for the mileage portion or both?
The reason I ask is, if I wait until the 4 yr/50K warranty is almost up, and buy a 4 yr/48K mile extension, will that give me coverage for 8 yr / 98K ? |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
| Total coerage, yes. It goes from the date and mileage of the purchase of the warranty. |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
Apparently, now as I understand it from American Honda, the plans that are issued for new vehicles with under 6,000 miles on them originate from the in-service date of the vehicle and not the date of purchase. This refers to the new vehicle plan codes only.
I'll be contacting those who purchased the warranty through me under this stipulation shortly. |

I believe the Acura dealer only looks for a valid warranty under your VIN, regardless of the state where you purchased it.
Besides, it seems there might be a problem getting warranty work performed if you moved out of state, if that were not the case. |

If it is a genuine AcuraCare warranty (as Tim's are, since he's a dealer) then it is good at any Acura dealer in the country. They put the info in the computer system and any dealer can pull up your coverage along with your vehicle service/repair history. |

I think Mr. Mom is questioning the fine print on the Honda financial services web site: Link
Florida residents may only purchase Honda and Acura Care coverage from a Florida Honda or Acura dealer. Washington residents may only purchase Honda and Acura Care service contracts for new and used Acura and Honda automobiles from Washington dealers and select dealers from contiguous states. Contact your local automobile dealer for details.)

Wow, that's pretty messed up! What happens if you move into one of those states after purchasing one in another state previously? I never knew that. |

| Looks like I’m stuck with trying to get a policy from a handful of dealers in my state. Last time I inquired about the extended warranty they tried to sell me a second party’s they claimed was ranked number one by JD Powers. It was around 2K and they claimed it covered more than Acura’s. Guess I’m in for some research. |

Hi,
saw the post concerning the extended Warranty in Washington. This prompted me to contact Acura of Bellevue. The person in finance said that since my vehicle had 14k miles, I wouldn't be able to use the Acura Care Warranty that Tim provides.
Tim are you able to comment on this? Tim what about the Honda fine print that restrict sales to Washington State residents?
She tried to sell me a warranty from a third party. Ha.
Also, anybody in Washington find an Acura dealer willing to sell an Acura Care Warranty like Tim's?
Thanks |

I have a 2005 MDX with 12K miles and was following this thread to get extended warrantee. My friend looked at a 2005 used MDX with 19500 miles and the dealer quoted him extended warrantee up to 100k with $0 ded for $850. Do not have any details other that he was quoted the price with $0 deductible.
I thought based on the high miles on the car he should not be able to get such a quote, can dealers offer $0 ded warrantee @ the time of purchase of CPO? |
|
|
| hondacuraworld |
The warranty that he was quoted must not have been a factory Acura warranty.....once you pass 6,000 miles, all that is offered is the $100 deductible.....
Unless, it was an Acura certified used vehicle, and the dealer was able to offer what they call a "wrap", which would be an extension of the Certified warranty to include a 7/100/0. |

I just bought an '06 MDX/Touring/Nav/DVD, and am interested in the extended warranty. One question, though: what happens if your car gets totalled during the warranty period? The finance manager at the dealer I bought from said you'd be refunded the prorated, unused portion of the warranty. Is that true?
BTW, their "rock bottom" price on the Acura Care warranty was about $800 above hondaacuraworld.com. They were surprised when I chuckled that I'd pass on the warranty, because I knew I could get a much lower price elsewhere! |

Absolutely true. |

you don't have to be in an accident and have your car totaled to get the refund.... if you decide to sell or trade in the car early... you also get a prorated refund (at least that's how it works with every other extended warranty i've had!) i always assume i'll keep the car longer... and get the warranty..... however the last few cars i end up trading them in :o
i'll be visiting hondaacruraworld's website soon, too! last night the finance guy gave his best price.... still $400 too high.. and claimed he was only making $25.00.... we just said "no thanx"! |

ok.... so just to get this straight...
i go to hondaacuraworld's site... put the warranty i want in the shopping basket... along with my VIN... pay for my warranty... then you will put it into the nationwide acura computer... so that next time i go to a dealership... they will see that i have it? as well as send me any hard copies i need?
is there a contract to sign? anything else involved? |

One more question for Tim:
I have 2005 MDX Touring with NAV & RES with 12K miles.
My though is to wait until gets closer to the 48 months/50K miles and then buy the extended warranty. Just in case I decide to trade in my car or sell it within the manufacture original warranty. I just wanted to avoid losing money when I cancel the extended warranty.
Do you have any reasons why I should or should not wait and buy the extended warranty now? |

Tim-
Just got myself a new 2006 MDX. The finance lady at the dealer told me that I could only buy an extended warranty when purchasing the car. She said Honda/Acura just came out with this provision. It didn't seem quite right. She backed off and said that an extended warranty could only be purchased from honda/acura within the first 6k miles (regardless of the deductible level). Has anything changed recently or will I still be able to purchase an extended warranty (although with a $100 deductible) after I have 6k on the vehicle?
Thanks |

I'm sorely tempted to get it but I don't want the tranny issue hanging over me like with my 01. An 8 yr/120 K warranty will assuage the purchase anxiety. |

| Hard to tell what they've got up their sleeve. Acura usually reissues their warranty booklets every September, so we probably won't know anything till then....... |

Tim, I would like to purchase this warranty, going to your site now.
EDIT: Our MDX is 2003 with under 50K, the drop down is for 2004 under 50K, should we call you, or select 2004 model?
Thanks,

| As long as when you go to look at your basket, the plan is code U46, you're fine :) |

Just placed the order, and when I checked out and paid I noticed that the plan is "U45". not "U46"
AC-MDX-EW-100 Acura MDX Extended Warranty w/$100 deductible
PLAN: U45
Date: 04/20/2006 14:05:08 EDT
What should I do?
EDIT: Please let me know if I need to change the order. Or which selection I need to choose for the "U46" code.

Hi Tim, Or anyone else w/ Experience on this...
What's the difference between buying from the Dealership and from buying from you?
Except the fact that you're about $400 to $1300 cheaper than what different dealerships offered?
Is the cost the same for MDX w/ NAV and w/o NAV?
Also, do all certified Acura service shops *required* to honor the service agreement? Or is it possible that you could get 2nd rate treatment since u decided not to buy from the dealership?
Sorry if this has already been covered in the thread.
I like to see reassurances. :P
thanks! |

*** Um, that's about it, yes :)

*** When your vehicle history is pulled, it doesn't show where you bought the warranty from, just the fact that there is one in effect. Therefore, they won't treat you any differently regardless.

*** My pleasure :) |

Tim
I tried you by email but I was having server problems, so I'm not sure if I got through.
2003 MDX Touring/NAV with 49,4xx miles.
What are the prices for 2/24 and 3/36?
Also..
What are the appropriate code numbers (e.g.U46) that I should look for in my checkout basket for either warranty?
Is it easier to just call you at the 888 number?
Another question (jeez!!): Can the extended warranty work be done at a Honda dealer? It is many miles to the nearest Acura dealer.
Thanks!!! |

2 year 24K - 950.00 (plan U25)
3 year 36K - 1265.00 (plan U35)
Just like the standard Acura warranty, the work must be performed at an Acura dealership...... |

Buyers should be aware the extended AcuraCare is not transparent, like you still have the original warranty.
It is NOT bumper to bumper. But will cover most of the systems that might make you faint if they failed prematurely.
I believe door hardware, and other ancilliary stuff is no longer covered. (need to read it again..) But against the engine block cracking, transmission failing, power seat, or the navigation system going belly up, it still offers great peace of mind for those planning to keep their MDXs a long time.
And you will be told when bringing it in for repair, you are responsible for the diagnosis, until it is determined by Acura to be fully covered under warranty. In which case, the charge is waived.
This is a 'detail' but worth mentioning.
Something you normally should not have experienced under the original warranty.
At least this was my experience when bringing mine in for the power seat repair. As it turned out I still had a week under the original. So I got the usual treatment, including COURTESY VEHICLE TO BE PROVIDED typed across the work order.
How curteous they want to be on Acura Care I think will largely depend on how much effort your specific dealership will be willing to extend.
BTW, thanks again, Tim. It is was a great price, I doubt it can be beat. |

Thanks for looking Tim, but my lack of access to an Acura dealer rules out the Acura Care warranty.
I really do appreciate you taking the time to look into the prices for me.
