I currently use T-Mobile and access their hot spots when I'm on the road, on vacation, or in between meetings. The service is great, but I can't always get to one of "their" Hot Spots to access their service.
Verizon is expanding their wireless broadband and I'm thinking about switching. It's a little bit more expensive than my T-Mobile plan ($29.99 a month), but if Verzion works as advertised, it will provide a lot more flexibility. Anyone here use it?

I don't subscribe to the service, but I am very familiar with it.
It works but it is still in the process of rolling out, so I would look at the areas of current coverage.
What is T-Mobiles advertised download/upload speeds? |

| T-Mobile claims they have a full T-1 to every hot spot. The performance has been superb, I'll run a speed test the next time I use their service to see the actual download/upload speeds I experience. |

i've been using the V620 card from verizon for the past 6 months or so, and travel throughout the entire west coast, NYC/NJ metro, and miami. no problems whatsoever. their connection speeds can be a bit challenging at times, but the mere fact that i can access the net from anywhere at anytime is a must for the business traveler. i even used it in maui with a pretty good connection.
i would highly recommend over using hot spots. |

| I don't do speed tests often, but once I checked and was pulling down 1.1 Mbps. I'm told more average speeds are 5-600 kbps. When you're not in a high-speed area (EV-D0), you still get 1xRTT speeds (75-125 kbps). The fact that you can get online from most anywhere is a huge benefit. |

| Another nice thing with 1xevdo over the the hot spot solution I believe is that it handles mobility (movement) well. So if you were surfing while on a movong car or train, you would not have a problem (not sure if you would or would not have a problem when switching cell sites). |

| Thanks all for the feedback. I took the plunge today and the set-up was a snap. Works pretty well here in Southern, CT. hopefully it'll be just as good on the road trips.:4: |

Now you need to rig it to a WiFi router in your car. Then your MDX will be a roving hotspot. I know a guy who did this in his minivan. The kids work all the way to Tahoe so they don't have to do homework when they get there. I always have this image of a little wifi halo hanging around his minivan. He said people in other cars nearby (really nearby) can log on too.
I just wish Verizon would let me subscribe to one data plan and use both an EVDO card in my laptop and periodic data downloads on my mobile, but the f'ers want every last bit of ARPU from me so they get nothing instead. The real irony is I write about this stuff all the time. |
